WITNESSES;
may be connected'to the circuit froiri which energy is received.
When collector rings are mounted in such,
a position, that themagnetic Box in the core passesthrough' them, 1t;is advisable to provide'an 'openlng in the ring in which insulation may be inserted to prevent the induction of a short-circuited current in the ring and,
in regulation, where such. short -circuited cur-rents would be excessive, a pair of narrow brushes, which areconneetedby an inductive or other suitable resistance, may be advantageously employed to' engage the ring in which two opposite portions of the core are rotatably mounted. Fig. 2 is aJ'similar' '25 view, in; which spools or bobbins .a'rerotatably mounted on two opposite fixedportions' of the core. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view of the circuit connections of; the regulators disclosed in Figs'. l and 2, and Fig. 4 is a view, similar to Fig.2, of a regulator that is provided with independent ;fixed primaryand secondary windings in a ddition to the regulating winding ofmyinvention Referring to,Figs. l and 3, a magnetiqable core 1 comprises two fixed portions 2 and 3 and a plurality of rotatablymonnted portions 4, and 5 that are provided with shaft extensions (3 and? upon which slip- rings 8 and 9 and pinions 1 0 and 11 are mounted. The rotatable portions may be simultaneously driven by a gear-wheel 12 which engages the pinions and may be driven by any convenient means, such, for. examplefasfa hand-wheel 13." The slip- rings 8 and 9 ia i"e insulated from their respective shafts and are connected to opposite 'ends' of a flexible winding 14, which 'is coiledabout the rotatable core portions 4 and fiin'such a way that its turns may be distr buted between the'twoportions or maybe ntirely-wound on either p'ortion, their p sitionpad idjistribution being determined bfyfthe"slnmltaneous rotation of the-cores'uponflwlnch they'are mounted.-

is supplied-with energy" therefrom. lhe.
slip- rings 8 and 9 are'en'gagedby a pair of.
brushes l8 and 19, which are connected in series with the-line conductor 17, so that the entire circuit current passes throughthe ilexihlewvinding l' l'eitcept that which. is snp plied .to the s'tatioi'l'ary' coil 15.

.ner as to include the winding .the main'eircuit.
VVhen-all'the turns of the winding are motive force induced therein is in the same direction 'as'that ofthe line 16-17, so that its value is added to that of the line. When the turns in the winding Hare evenly distributed between the two core portions i and 5, the electromotive forces induced in the two portions oppose each other, substantially neutralizing. their effect upon the line, and when the turns of'the windingv 14.- are all transferred to the portion 5, the 'electroinotive force induced therein is opposed to that of the line, plied'therefrom is less than the line voltage.
Any variation between these two values may be obtained by proper. distribution of the turns of-the winding let between the core portions tand 5.

tomake contact with the ring 24 and may be connected to the ends of a prerenth'e resistance 26. The ring-25 is similarly provided with two brushes 27 that may be connected to the-terminals of a preventive resistance 27. The middle pointsof the preventive" resistances 26? and 27" are connected to the interrupted line conductor 28 in such man- Any suitable means for driving the spools 21 and 22 may be employed, such as gear wheels- 30 and. 31, whichare keyed to the spools, and a similar gear-wheel 32- that may 23 in series in be actuated by a hand-wheel 33 or otherwise. i
The magnetizingwinding 15 may be located and connected in circuit substantn lly as in the modification shown in Fig. 1.'
Referring to. Fig. 4, energy is supplied from an electric supply line 34-43% to a primary magnetizingwinding 36, which corresponds to the fixed winding 15 of Figs.
1, 2 and 3 and is mounted upon .a magnetizable core 27.- An independent fixed secondary is connected in series with a'llcxihle winding 39, which corresponds to the windings l-1 and 23 of Fi 's. l and 2.
ln the system shown in Fig. 4:,- the energy erg, by induction, from the Jwimljng 38 is i'ilounted upon the core 37 and for the work circuitf40-'41 is supplied by the winding which, in turn receives its enwinding 36, the13t) imam? ,8
