To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES A. Bacon- TOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountainside, inthe county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Transferring Means, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in car transferring means, and more particularly contemplates poweroperated means for use in mines to transfer the cars which are employed to carry out the diggings of the mine.
The invention consists in the-improvements to be fully described hereinafter and .the novelty of which will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
"when cars are employed for carrying out the d1-gg'1ngs,'thecars are transferred or propelled through the main headings and leries of the mines, by cable systems, electr c trolley systems, and draft mules, and the cars are transferred or switched into the branch headings or rooms by mules in each of the cases mentioned, as it is impracticable to extend the cableway systems or electric systems into the branch headings, so that, no matter what form of power is employed for propelling the cars through the main headings or galleries, mules have formed the draft means for propelling the cars into the branch galleries where the mining operations are taking place.
By my invention according to the embodiment to be described a portable power plant is employed adapted to travel on the track of the main heading, and a plurality of draft lines, one for each branch heading, and an individual operating drum for each line located at the entrance to each branch headfineans to a car 22. -w1ll be seen that the line may be attached ing, provision being made whereby the portable power plant inay be coupled individually to the drums to pull the cars into the respective headings.
Referring to the drawings bymharacters of reference: 2 designates the main heading or gallery of a mine, and 2, 2 are the branch. headings or rooms in which the mining operations are being performed, the latter be ing separated by partitions 3 as shown.
Extending longitudinally of the main lery 1 is the main tra'ckway 4 upon which the cars are propelled to and from the branch headings, said trackway being joined to a branch trackway or siding 5 which enters and extends longitudinally of the branch heading and 6 is a car to travel on the main and branch trackways. It will be understood that there will be a branch trackway for each branch heading or for each heading which is being mined. At the entrance preferably ofeachbranchhead ing is arranged a winding drum 7 mounted on a horizontal shaft 8 in bearings 9 on a frame 10. ,The drum is provided with a brake rim 11 with which cooperates brake I swinging the; lever to urge the brake shoe into engagement with the brake rim so that the drum may revolve under friction. The head of the drum is also provided with a beveled gear 15 with which meshes a gear 16 on the. end of a shaft 17 extending at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the drum and journaled in a bearing 18 on the main frame. At its end opposite to that carrying the gear 16 the shaft 17 carries one member 19 of a universal joint of Well known form and having the arms 20.

While I have fleSClibQClthlS invention as a means for transferring the cars in a mine, it will be understood that it is not necessarily limited to use in connection with mining operations,'hut may be employed in connection with any system of transportation which involves the main tracltway from which extend branch trackways or any system of transportation in which there is a main tracl tway and one or more trackways extending 'at an angle to the main trackway.
While- I have shown and described what appears to me at the present time to be the best embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the particular construction and arrangement of parts as they are capable of wide variation Without departing from the spirit and scope of the in.- vention, more particularly the construction of the power plant and the means for connecting the same to the Windlass or other cable-operating means, or the specific struc ture of the cable-operating means. For stance, the power plant need not be pro vided with self-prope1ling means, but could be otherwise moved to the point where it is to operate and the power'plant could be connected to the cable-operating means by any power transmitting arrangement which could be readily coupled and uncoupled therefrom. j
I do not employ the term fixed in the claims in a limiting sense as designating any Way in which the rope-operating drums are mounted at the branch trackways.

3. ln a system of the character described, the combination of a main trackway, a plurality of branch trackways connected to the main tracltway at an angle thereto, a winding drum fixed at each of said angularly disposed trackways, a cable operated by each of said drums, a portable power plant adapted to travel. on the main trackway,
and 'means for connecting the portable power plant with said fixed drums to drive the latter.
