ATTACHMENT FOR BACKS OF CAR-SEATS.
To all whom at my concern:
Be it known that I, MARTHA IV. MUN- roan, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hawkinsville, in the county of l u-' laski and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Backs of Car-Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments to the backs of car seats and the object in View is to produce a simple and etticient device of this nature which may serve as a means for a person sitting behind one of the backs thus equipped to hold on in case of accidents.
The invention consists of various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically de-. fined in the appended claim,
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective View of the back of a car seat showing my device as attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the same longitudinally, and Fig. 3 is a detail view in elevation, partly in section and on an enlarged scale.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the ordinary back of the seat of a railway coach, pivotally mounted upon the pins A and" which latter are in turn pivoted to the B, pivoted at their lower ends to the seat in the usual manner. Fastened to each opposite longitudinal edge of the back are the plates D,-each having a lug D projecting therefrom and carrying a pivotal pin E. A rod F has an angled end F which is apertured to receive the pivotal pin E and a Specification of Letters Patent.

The rod F telescopes within the hollow tube H, making the same adjustable to fit different lengths of seats. Fastened to the rod F and also to the tube II are the bars K, each of which passes through an open-ended tubular shell N in whlch is mounted a coiled spring 0. The rod K is fastened to the lower end of the spring 0. Rods T are fastened to the plate D and each extends through a tubular shell N and each has its upper end fastened to the upper end of the coiled spring. A pin N passes through the shpll and spring and serves to hold the same ithin the latter.
By the provision of an attachment to the backs of car seats as shown and described, a simple and eflicient mechanism is afforded whereby, in the event of an accident, a person will have means to grasp by taking hold of the bars and, in the event of a sudden stoppage of the car, the backs of the seats which may be equipped with the device, the impact of sudden stop will be broken by the bars giving against the tension of the springs.
What I claim to be new is An attachment for the backs of car seats, consisting of rods, one telescoping within the other and having angled ends, plates fastened to the edges of the car back and having lugs to Which said angled ends are ivoted, bars fastened to said rods, open-ende shells, a coiled spring therein, means for holding the latter in place, the end of each rod being fastened to one end of the bar, other bars fastened to the plate and passing through said shells and connected each to the opposite end of the spring, as set forth.
