To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT H. STEELE, citizen of the United States, and resident of Marcellus, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type, Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines, and more particularly to means whereby tabulating operations may be automatically effected as the writing proceeds, and without the exercise of any care or judgment on the part of the operator, and without the necessity of actuating the tabulating he s.
3; further object of my invention is to provide automatically operating means by which the codperative contact devices are rendered eifective during the travel of the carriage in one direction and are rendered ineffective during the travel of the carriage in the opposite direction.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices to be set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the difierent views, Figure 1 is a fragmentary, vertical, fore and aft sectional view, showing the upper portion of a typewriting machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary, rear elevation of the same, with parts'in section and parts broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged, detail view showing some of the parts represented in Fig. 2 but showing the parts difierent-ly disposed. The present invention, from certain aspects, is in the nature of an improvement on the constructions shown in my applications Serial Nos. 616,318 and 616,819, filed March 23rd, 1911, and also on the construction shown in the application of Charles E. Smith Serial No. 631,505, filed June 6th, 1911.
The frame of the machine comprises corner posts 1 and a top plate 2 on which are supported in the usual manner fixed oppositely grooved guide rails 3. Anti-friction balls or rollers 4 are received in the grooved bearings in the guide rails 3 and also in the oppositely grooved bearings 5 of a guide bar 6 which constitutes the rear cross bar of the carriage. Forwardly projecting end plates or bars 7 extend from the cross bar 6 and are provided with hearings to receive a platen shaft 8, which supports a'rotative cylindrical platen 9. Rearwardly eX-' tending arms 10 are pivoted at 11 to the end plates 7 and support a feed rack 12 which meshes with a feed pinion 13, fixed to the forward end of a shaft 1 1. This shaft turns in a bearing bracket 15 fixed to the top plate of the machine. The rear end of the shaft- 14 is operatively connected to an escapement wheel 16 by the usual pawl and ratchet mechanism contained within a drum 17. By
" the pawl and ratchet connection the escapement Wheel is fixedly connected to turn with the shaft 14 and pinion 13 in their move ments in one direction, but affords a turning movement of the shaft and pinion in the opposite direction independently of the escapement wheel, and during the return movement of the carriage. The escapement wheel coiiperatcs with the usual feed dogs 18 carried by a dog rocker 19.' The dog rocker is controlled iii-the usual manner to afl'ord a-.step-by-step letter 'feed movement of the carriage under the power applied thereto by a spring drum 20 connected to the carriage by a. strap or band 21.
The construction thus far described is or may be of the usual construction'embodied in the Monarch machine except that the feed rack, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is modified, as will hereinafter appear.
The feed. rack 12 is provided with a series of perforations 22, which extend throughout the length of the rack and are preferably spaced apart to correspond to the spacing of the teeth of the rack. A series of receases or indenturcs 23 is formed in the up per edge of the rack above the apertures 22 and the apertures and recesses are correspondingly spaced; each recess 23 being located directly above a corresponding aperture 22. ,Disengaging devices, each designated as a whole by the numeral 24, are individually adjustable to different positions along the feed rack and are preferably formed as best shown in Fig. 1 with an upper arm and a lower arm 26.- The upper arm of. each disengaging device isadapted to be received in a recess 23, whereas the lower arm26 is adapted to be received in a corresponding aperture 22 beneath the recess in which the upper arm is received. In
' this manner the disengaging devices 24 may each be adjusted to various'letter space positions along the feed rack at different points throughout the' length thereof. The lower arm 26 of each disengaging device 24, where it projects rearwardly beyond the feed rack, fornisa contact member cooperative with a second disengaging device', as will hereinafter more clearly appear. The looped end of each disengaging device'24 constitutes a fill. ger piece to facilitate a withdrawal of the device and an adjustment thereof at differ ent points along the feed rack.
A cooperative disengagin device or member, designated as a whole y the reference 27, is mounted for movement into and out of the path ofthe members 24 as they move with the carriage during the travel thereof. The disengaging device 27 has a cam face 28 on the right-hand side thereof, or on the left-- hand side as the'parts appear in Fig. 2; the
' opposite side of the member 27 "having an abru t vertically disposed face, 29. -The mem er 27 is pivoted on'a shoulderedpivot screw'30 to a carrier 31. The member 27 is adapted to be received at its-.lefth a-nd edge in a slot. 32 formed in the bearing bracket 14 so that the latter constitutes an abutment to resist the pivotal movement of the member 27 in one direction and the "walls of the slot 32 guide the member inits vertical shifting movements. -Ana ertured guide lug 33 projects rearwardly rom the lower 'fixed guide rail 3 to receive the carrier 31 and guide it in its vertical movements. A leaf spring 34 is-fixed at one end by a'screw 35 to the guide lug and bears at itsupper free end against the member 27 to normally maintain y it against the bearing bracket 14, as represented in Figs. 2 and 3. An upwardly projecting finger or stop 36 is formed on the carrier 31 for cooperation witha pinor stop 37 which projects laterally from the member 27. This finger and pin are in engagement when the parts are in the position representedin Figs. 2 and 3, to aid in resisting the pivotal movement of the member -27 in one direction, or
to the right as the parts appear in Figs. 2 and 3. j The cam 28 on the member 27 has 'are moved by formed as a continuation thereof a dwell 38; thecam and dwell cooperating with the disengaging devices 24 during the travel of the feed rack with the carriage, as will presently appear. The lower end' of the carrier 31 is provided with a forwardly projecting pin 39 received in a cam slot 40 of a longitudinally adjustable bar 41. The cam slot 40 communicates with a horizontally disposed portion 42 at each end thereof and which forms a dwell to resist a movement of the carrier when the pinis seated in either of the terminal portions 42 of the cam slot. The bar 41 isslotted at 43 to receive the stems of headed screws 44; said screwsbeing received in ta ped openings in the lower fixed guide rail 0 the machine. The bar 41 is thus mounted for longitudinal movement under control of hand actuated means. These hand actuated means in the present instance comprise an upwardly projecting crank arm 45 which extends through a slot in the top plate and is pivoted at 46 to the right-hand end of the bar 41, as the parts in brackets 48; the brackets being secured to the under side of the top plate of the machine by screws 49. The shaft 47 extends ,from therear portion of the machine where it carries the crank arm 45 to the forward part of the machine, where it terminates in the rear of a front plate: 50. Adepending crank arm 51 is fixed to the rock shaft at ,its forward end and carries a forwardly projecting finger piece 52. The crank arm 51 is situated in the rear of the front plate but-the finger piece 52 extends through a segmental slot 53 to. the forward side of the front plate. The crank arm 51 is enlarged at 54 to provide a carrier for suit able indicating means on the front face thereof. In the present instance these indieating means are the words Out, as indicated in dotted lines at 55 in Fig. 2, and In as indicated at 56. A sight opening 57 is formed in the front plate 50 for registration with the words In -or Out, depending on the position to which the parts I the finger piece 52. When, for instance, the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, the automatically operating tabulating mechanism is out of operation and the word Out will register with the sight opening 57 to expose said word to the view of the operator. When the fingerpiece 52 is shifted to the opposite end of the slot the device 27 will be elevated to the position shown inFig. 3 and the devices will be rendered operative to automatically cf fecta tabulation duringthe travel of the carriage. At this time the word In Will register "Wlllll the sight opening to indicate at each tabulating operation when a single member 24 is brought into cooperation with the device 27. If, however, a greater extent of skipping movement is desired, the members 24 maybe adjusted adjacent to each other to afford a greater extent of skipping movement. Thus, for instance, if two of the members 24 be adjusted adjacent to one another, this will aiiord a skipping movement of three letter spaces. The devices 24 having been adjusted in accordance with the work to be produced, the operator proceeds with the writing and as the carriage travels in the direct-ion of the arrow in Fig. 2, the first of the devices 24 will be brought into cooperation with the member 27, which at this time is maintained in the elevated posi-' tion shown in Fig. 3. The efiect of the engagement between the members 24 and 27 is to cause the engaged member 24, during the travel of the carriage, to ride up on the cam 28, thus elevating the feed rack and disengaging it from its coiiperative feed member or pinion 13, thereby freeing the carriage from control of the escapement mechanism. T he carriage will travel freely, carrying the rack with it and the engaged device 24 will ride along the dwell 38 until it reaches a position such as that indicated in Fig. 3, where the abrupt face 29 of the member 27 is reached. The weight of the rack, aided it'desired by a suitable spring, is then efiective to move the rack down and establish reengagement between the rack and pinion; a predetermined extent of movement of the carriage having been thus automatically effected. The operator proceeds with the writing, and when the next point between columns is reached it will be skipped to bring the carriage from one column to the next, and so on. It will be understood that in the movement of the carriage in thedirectionof the arrow in Figs. '2'and 3, a pivotal movement of the member 27 v is resisted by the stops 36 and 37 and also by the engagement of the member'27 .with
' the bracket ,15.
However, during the return movement of the carriage in a direction opposite to that indicated by the arrows in said figures, the devices 24 will cooperate successively with the abrupt face 29 of the device 27 and will turn it to the left, as the parts appear in Figs. 2 and 3, against the pressure of the spring 34, until the engaged device 24 passes the member 27, when it will be returned to normal position by its spring.
It will be understood, therefore, that in the return movement of the carriage the device 27 is moved to one side by the parts 24 and no disengagement between the rack and its pinion is automatically efl'ected. In short, the automatically operating tabulating mechanism is efi'ective during the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed and is not efiective during the return movement of the carriage. The dwell in the righthand end'o'f the "cam slot 40, as the parts appear in Fig. 3, resists a downward move ment of the carrier 31 and the device 27 pivoted'thereto during the cooperation of the devices 24 and 27. Shouldthe operator desire to throw the automatic tabulating mechanism out of operation and maintain it inoperative,it is merely necessary to move the finger piece 52 to theposition represented in Fig. 2, thus lowering the member 27 to a position where it is out of the path of'the devices 24.
In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 I have showna moditied form of construction. in which practically a reversal of the construction shown in the preceding figures is illustrated. In Figs. 4, 5 and 6 the parts which correspond to those represented in the preceding figures are indicated by the same reference numerals. In this modified form of construction an auxiliary bar 58 is provided with upwardly extending arms 59 secured to the upper fixed guide rail by screws 60.. This'bar is apertured substantially throughout its length, as indicated at 61; the bar and apertures extending longitudinally of the feed rack and the bar being arranged adjacent thereto. The upper edge of the bar 58 is recessed at 62 throughout the length thereof; the recesses being spaced according to the apertures 61 and being arranged above the same for cotiperation with disengaging devices 63. Each of these disengaging devices is preferably formed as represented in Fig. 4 with an upper arm 64 having enlarged head 65 adapted to be received in any of the recesses 62- A lower arm 66 is provided on each of the devices 63 for engagement in any of the apertures 61. The looped rear end of each member 63 constitutes a finger piece by which the devices may be adjusted to difierent positions along the fixed supporting bar 58. A cooperative disengaging device 67, which is in the nature of a bell crank lever is pivoted to the front side of a feed rack 68 on a shouldered pivot screw'69. One arm of the angular lever has fixed thereto, and extending longitudinally thereof, a wire spring 70 which engages beneath a pin '71 extending forwardly from the feed rack. A
second pin or stop 72 projects forwardly from the feed rack in the path of the upright arm of the angular lever. The force of the spring is exerted to normally maintain the device 67 in a position represented in Figs. 5 and 6,-with the upright arm thereof in contact with the stop pin 72. The device 67 has a contact portion 73 which extends rearwardly beyond the upper edge of the feed rack 68, in a position Where it is adapted to cotiperate with the enlarged head 65 on each of the members 63 during the travel of the carriage. The feed rack 68 is slotted at 74 to receive the contact portion 73 of the disengaging device 67 when the latter is turned to the right on its pivot 69, as the parts appear in Fig. 5. In this construction the devices 63 are set at the proper points on the fixed bar 58 in accordance with the work to be produced. As the carriage travels in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 5, the disengaging device 67 will travel with the feed rack until it reaches the first of the devices 63. This will result in elevating the rack by camming the device 67 carried by therack upwardly, as illustrated in Fig. 6, to disengage the feed rack from the pinion. A skipping movement of the carriage, in the direction of the arrows in Figs..5 and 6, is effected until the opposite side of the en gaging portions 73 passes the engaged member 63, when the rack will be lowered to effect a reengagement of it with the feed pinion. The parts are so proportioned in the present instance that a double letter space movement of the carriage is effected by the cooperation of each of the members 63 with the device 67. It will be understood that during the travel of the carriage in the direction of the arrows in Figs. 5 and 6 a turning movement of the member 67 around its pivot will be resisted by the stop 72. When, however, the carriage moves in an opposite direction from that indicated by the arrows, the contact portion 73 of the device 67 will engage each member 63 and will be turned on its pivot into the slot 74 and against the pressure of its spring 70. It will be understood, therefore, that during the return movement of the carriage to begin a new line of writing the device 73 is turned on its pivot as it is brought into engagement with each of the devices 63, so that the mechanism is rendered ineffective to disengage the rack from its pinion during the return movements of the carriage. The construction is therefore rendered automatically inoperative during the return movement of the carriage and is effective only during its movement in a letter feed direction, or in the movement of the carriage from right to left, or from left to right, as the parts appear in Fig. 5.
Certain of the features disclosed herein the travel of the carriage where said are broadly claimed in my. hereinbefore mentioned previously filed applications; the claims onsuch features in the present case being restricted to distinguish from those constructions. However, the automatically operating means, hereinbefore' described, whereby the tabulat-ing or disengaging devices are rendered operative only during a travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed, or by which the carriage may be freely returned Without interference from the disengaging devices, are broadly claimed here.- in; the claims to such devices in my case Sr. No. 616,319 being restricted to distinguish from the construction disclosed in this case.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

1[ In a typewriting machine, the combination of a power-driven carriage; escapement mechanism therefor; automatically operat: ing means for freeing the carriage from control of said escapement mechanism for different predetermined numbers of letter spaces and for automatically placing the carriage under control of the escapement mechanism at the completion of the free travel of the carriage for a predetermined number of letter spaces, said means including adjustable devices by which the point in cans shall become operative and the number of such letter spaces may be predetermined at will; and means whereby said automatically operating means are operative only during the travel of the carriage in one direction and a return movement of the carriage may be effected without bringing said automatically operating means into play.
'2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a power-driven carriage; escapement mechanism therefor, including a feed rack and a cooperative device engaged by said feed rack, the feed rack being. mounted to move into and out of engagement with said cooperative device; and automatically op erating means for disengaging said feed rack from its cooperative device at one point in the feed of the carriage to afford a free travel of the latter and for affording an automatic reengagement of the rack with its cooperative device at another point in the travel of the carriage, whereby a predetermined extent of skipping movement of the carriage in the direction of its feed is effected; and means whereby a return movement of the carriage may be effected without disengaging the feed rack from its cooperative device.
3. In a typew'riting machine, the combination of a power-driven carriage; carriage feed mechanism including a feed pinion, and a cooperative feed rack mounted for movement into and out of engagement with said feed pinion; automatically operating means for disengaging said feed rack from the pinion at diiierent predetermined points in the travel of the carriage and for automati cally restablishing engagement between said rack and pinion after the carriage has traveled tree a predetermined distance, said means comprising adjustable means for de termining the point in the travel of the carriage where such disengagement shall take place and for determining how far the carriage shall travel free before the said reengagement shall be effected; and means whereby a return movement of the carriage may be eitected without disengaging the feed rack from its cooperative feed pinion.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a power-driven carriage; escapementmechanism therefor comprising a feed rack, and a cooperative feed device; a disengaging device carried by said feed rack and operative to automatically disen age the rack from its cooperative feed device at a precetermined point in the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed; and means whereby a return movement of the carriage may be efi'ected without disengaging the feed rack from its cooperative device.
5, In a typewriting machine, the combination 01: a power-driven carriage; escapement mechanism therefor comprising a feed rack, and a. coiiperative teed device; a disengaging device carried by said feed raclc operative to automatically disengage the rack from its cooperative teed device at a predetermined point in the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed; means by which an adjustment of said disengaging device may be effected to different points along said rack to determine at what point in the travel of the carriage the disengagement between the rack and its coiiperative feed device shall take place; and means whereby a return movement of the carriage may be effected without disengaging the feed rack from its cotiperative device.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a power driven carriage; escapement mechanism therefor including a feed rack, and a cooperative feed device; automatically operating means for effecting a disengagement between said feed rack and its cooperative feed device during the feed of the carriage, said means including a device carried by and detachable from said feed rack; and means whereby a return movement of the carriage may be effected without disengaging the feed rack'from its coiiperative device.

In atypewriting machine, the combination of a power driven carriage; escapement mechanism therefor including a feed rack, and a cooperative device engaged by said feed rack, the feed rack being mounted to move into and out of engagement with said coiiperative device; automatically operating means for disengaging said teed rack from its coiiperative device at one point in the feed of the carriage to afiord a free travel of the latter and for afi'ording an automatic rengagement of the rack with its cooperative device at another point in the travel of the carriage, whereby a predetermined extent of skipping movement of the carriage in the direction of its feed is effected; hand controlled means adjustable at will and effective by its adjustment to render said disengaging means operative or in- I operative, as may be desired; and automatically operating means whereby a return movement or" the carriage may be effected without disengaging the feed rack from its cooperative teed device by said disengaging means. 7
8. in a typewriting machine, the combination of a power driven carriage; escapement mechanism therefor comprising a feed rack, and a cotiperative feed device; a disengaging device carried by said feed rack and operative to automatically disengage the rack from its cotiperative feed device at a predetermined point in the travel oi the carriage in the direction of its feed; means separate from said disengaging device and operable at will for rendering the disengag ing device operative or inoperative as may be desired; and automatically operating means whereby a return movement of the carriage may be efi'ected without disengaging the feed rack from its cooperative feed device by said disengaging device.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a power driven carriage; escapement mechanism therefor comprising a feed rack, and a coiiperative feed device; a disengaging device carried by said feed rack and operative to automatically disengage the rack from its cooperative feed device at a predetermined point in the. travel of the carriage in the direction ofits feed; means by which an adjustment of said disengaging device may be effected to different points along said rack, to determine at What point in the travel ot the carriage the disengagement between the rack and its cooperative feed'device shall take place; means separate from said disengaging device and the ad justment thereof and operable at will to ren- ,der the disengaging device operative or in operative as may be desired; and automatically operating means whereby a return movement of the carriage may be effected without disengaging the feed rack from its cotiperative feed device by said disengaging device.
10. In a typewriting 'niachine the combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism therefor comprising a feed rack, and a oooperative feed device; a disengaging device carried by said feed rack; a second disengaging device separate from said cooperative feed device and cooperative with the first mentioned disengaging device to automatically disengage the rack from its cooperative feed device at a given point in the travel of the carriage in thedirection of its feed; and means whereby said disengaging devices are ineffective to bring about a disengagement between the feed rack and its cooperative feed device during the return movement of the carriage. 11. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism therefor comprising a feed rack and a cooperative. feed device; a disengaging device carried by said feed rack; a second disengaging device coi perative with said first mentioned disengaging device to automatically disengage the rack from its coiiperative teed device at a predetermined point in the feed movement of the carriage; means whereby said disengaging devices are ineffective to bring about a disengagement between the feed rack and its cooperative feed device during the return movement of the carriage; and hand controlled means cooperative with one of said disengaging devices and operable at will to move it into and out of cooperative relation with the other of'said disengaging devices, to render the disengaging devices automatically operative or inoperative as may be desired.
12. In atypewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism therefor comprisinga feed rack and a 00- operative teed device; a set of individually adjustable disengaging devices; a cooperative disengaging device separate from ,said cooperative feed device, one of said coiiperative disengaging devices and the set of disengaging devices being carried by the feed rack and the other being carried by the frame of the machine, said disengaging devices being cooperative during the travel of the carriage in the direction of'its feed to automatically disengage the feed rack from its cooperative feed device to afford a free travel of the carriage, the points in the travel of the carriage where such disengage-.
mentsshall take place being determined by the individual adjustment of said individually adjustable disengaging devices; andmeans whereby said disengaging devices are rendered ineffective to bring about a disengagement between the feed rack and its cooperative feed device during the return movement of the carriage.
13. In atypewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism I therefor comprisin a feed rack, and a cooperative feed device; a set of individually adjustable disengaging devices; a cooperative disengaging device separate from said the carriage in the direction of its feed to automatically disengage the feed rack from its cooperative feed device to afford a free travel of the carriage, the points in the travel of the carriage where such disengagements shall take place being determined by the individual ad ustment of said individually adjustable disengaging devices; means whereby said disenga ing devices are rendered ineffective to bring about a disengagement between the feed rack and its cooperative feed device during the return movement of the carriage; and hand actuated means operable at will to move one :of said cooperative disengaging devices and set of disengaging devices into and out of cooperative relation with the other, and for maintaining it indefinitely in such position, so that said disengaging devices may be rendered automatically operative or inoperative as may be desired.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism thereforcomprising a feed rack, and a 00- operative feed device; a set of individually adjustable disengaging devices carried by said feed rack; a cam in the path of said disengaging devices to automatically disengage the rack from its cooperative feed device at predetermined points in the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed; and means whereby said cam and disengagingdevices are rendered ineffective to bring about a disengagement between the feed rack and its cooperative feed device during the return movement of thecarriage.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism therefor comprising a feed rack, and a cooperative feed device; a-set of individually adjustable disengaging devices carried by said feed rack, a-cam in the path of said disengaging devices, to automatically disengage the rackfrom its cotiperative feed device at predetermined points in the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed; and meanswhereby said cam may be auto-- matically moved to one side 'by said disengaging devices during the return movement of the carriage.
16. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; esca ement mecha-' nism therefor comprising a eed rack, and a cooperative feed device; a set of individually adjustablev disengaging devices carried by said feed rack; a cam in the path of said disengaging devices, to automatically disengage the rack from its cooperative feed device at predetermined points in the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed; means whereby saidcam may be automatically moved to one side by said disenga ing devices during the return movement 0 the carriage; and hand cont-rolled means operable at will to render said cam and disengaging devices wholly inoperativeto auto-. matically disengage the feed rack from its cooperative device.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism therefor comprising a feed rack, and a cooperative feed device; a set of individually adjustable disengaging devices carried by said feed'rack; a cam in the path of said disengaging devices to automatically disengage the rack from its cooperative feed device at predetermined points in the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed; means whereby said cam may be automatically moved to one side by said disengaging devices during the return movement/of the carriage; and hand controlled means operable at will to move the cam into and out of the path of said disengaging devices and operative to retain it indefinitely in either of such positions, so that the disengaging devices may be rendered either automatically operative or wholly indperative as may be desired.
18. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism therefor comprising a feed rack, and a cooperative feed device; a set of individually adjustable disengaging devices carried by and adjustable along said feed rack, each of said disengaging devices having an engaging projection arranged at one side of the feed rack and above the teeth thereon, a cam arranged in the path of said engaging projections and cooperative therewith to automatically lift the rack and disengage it from its cooperative feed device at predetermined points in the travel of the carriage in the direction -of its feed; and means whereby said cam may be automatically moved out of the path of the disengaging devices during the return movement of the carriage.
19. In a typewriting machine, the coinbination of a carriage, carriage feed mechanism, automatically operating tabulating mechanism including contact devices that are automatically brought into effective co operation during the travel of the carriage in the direction ofits feed to release the carriage from control of the escapement mechanism, and means which enable the contact devices to be rendered ineffective during the return movement of the carriage.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; and automatically operating tabulating mechanism including, contact devices that normally extend one into the path of another during the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed and automatically control the tabulating operation, and means whereby the said contact devices are automatically moved one out of the path of another during the return movement of the carriage.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; and automatically operating tabulating mechanism including contact devices that normally extend gone into the path of another during the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed and automatically control the tabulating operation, one of said contact devices being pivoted and held against movement from the normal position around its pivot during the travel of the carriagein the direction of its feed, and free tobelmoved around its pivot by said cooperating contact devices during the return movement of the carriage, to
render the contact devices ineffective during the return movement of the carriage.
22. In a typewriting machine, the'combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism therefor including two cooperative disengageable feed devices; and automatically operating tabulating mechanism including cooperative cont-act devices automatically operative to effect a disengagement between said cooperative feed devices during the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed but inoperative to effect such disengagement during the return movement of the carriage.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a I carriage; escapement mechanism therefor including two coopefative disengageable feed devices; and automatically operating tabulating mechanism including cooperative contact devices automatically operative to effect a disengagement between said cooperative feed devices during the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed but inoperative to effect such disengagement during the return movement of the carriage, one of said contact devices being normally in the path of the other and fixed against movement by the other during the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed and being free to be moved out of the path of the other' contact device by contact therewith during the return movement of the carriage.
In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism therefor; automatically operating tabulating mechanism for freeing the carriage from control of its escapement mechanism during the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed, said tabulating mechanismcomprising cooperative disengaging devices; and automatically operating means for rendering said disengaging devices ineffective during the return movement of the carriage.

In a typeWrit-ing machine, the combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism therefor; automatically operating tabulating mechanism, said tabulating mechanism including cooperative disengaging devices and automatically operating means for rendering the disengaging devices operative to free the carriage from control of the escapement mechanism during the travel of the carriage in the direction of its feed and to render said disengaging devices ineflective during the return movement of the carriage.
26. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, escapement mechanism therefor, and automatically operating tabulating mechanism effective to free the carriage fr m control of the escapement mechanism during the travel of the carriage in one direction to provide a tabulating movement of the carriage, said means heing ineffective to free the carriage from control of the escapement mechanism during the return movement of the carriage.
27. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage; escapement mechanism therefor; automatically operating tabulating mechanism including two cooperative contact devices, and means whereby one of said contact devices bears an obstructing relation to the other during the travel of the carriage in one direction and is free from constituting an obstruction during the'movement of the carriage in an opposite direction.
