SIGHTS FOR SMALL-ARMS AND ORDNANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TAYLOR PEDDIE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Caxton House, Westminster, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sights for Small- Arms and Ordnance, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sights for small arms and ordnance, of the type wherein a leaf is provided with independent side members upon which the cross bar can be coarsely adjusted and which can be moved relatively to the leaf to eifect a fine adjustment and as described in the specification of my prior Patent No. 922,945. with this type of sight as hitherto arranged, it is necessary to make a fine adjustment for each coarse adjustment of the sight bar.
The object of the present invention is to enable a sight to be initially corrected, so far as elevation is concerned, by a fine adjustment with the cross bar at any one range and to render this initial adjustment or correction sufficient for all ranges within the limits of the sight. For example, if it is found necessary to correct the sight by a fine adjustment of 5 at a range of 500 yards. This adjustment when effected according to the invention will be simultaneously made for 900 yards or any other range on the sight and no further adjustment will be required, the adjustment once made remaining good indefinitely.
Other objects are to enable a drift plate to be used with a sight of the above type and in conjunction with a cross bar having spring pawls for engagement with the independent side members.
The accompanying drawings illustrate by way of example one form of sight according to the present invention.
Figure l is a front elevation partly in section of a sight minus the usual base plate. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 8 is a sectional plan view, and Fig. 4 a fragmentary side view partly in section of the lower part of the leaf and cross bar.
In carrying out the invention according to one mode the leaf a is formed with half round ridges with which correspondingly recessed independent side members 6 engage, the members being connected by, or being formed integrally with, a bar 0 which is fitted with a differential screw, 03 for instance, as described in the specification before referred to, by which screw the members Z) can be moved relatively to the leaf a. The members 6 are preferably of flat cross section although they may be of half round or of any other suitable cross section.
A cross bar 6 has extensions f embracing the members I) and is positively engaged therewith by teeth 9 which in the known manner are carried by two rods it formed integrally with or secured to hollow heads 2' acted upon by springs 70 which tend to draw the teeth 9 into notches Z in the edges of the members Z) the teeth 9, being withdrawn when required by the heads 2' being forced toward one another.
The leaf a is formed inside with inclined guiding edges m between which a drift plate a slides. The drift plate is provided with a short slot 0 into which a pin p on one of the rods h projects so that when the cross bar is slid along the members, I) the drift plate is carried by it. The drift plate is preferably provided with a sighting notch g and a peep hole 0".
The extensions f are provided with two sets of zero or gage marks 8 and t for registering with range graduations, it upon the members I). The notches Z are arranged in correct relation to the graduations u and zero marks 8 and t so that the cross bar is positively locked by the teeth 9 in all the positions corresponding to the ranges indi cated on the members I). To enable a fine vertical adjustment tobe effected by the screw 01 a fine scale of graduations 'v is provided preferably on the upper end of the leaf a and a single zero mark or a few fine graduations w is or are provided upon one of the members 6. It will be noticed that when a fine adjustment has been effected for any one range it is automatically effected for all the other ranges indicated on the leaf.
In order that the cross bar or its heads 2' shall clear the usual hinge or knuckles on the usual base plate the knuckle w on the leaf is set back as shown in Fig. 2 and the side portions of the cross bar are cut away as at 3 By setting back the knuckle a: clearance is provided for the cross bar 6 and the drift plate a.
By the invention the leaf may be used in the vertical position for all the ranges with in its limits so that usual ramps on the base plate are avoided. The sight however, may
be provided with the usual sight notch 2 used when the leaf is horizontal.
