To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES K. NORVELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Seal for Cars and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to seals for cars and other purposes, the object being to provide a seal of this character which will be inexpensive to manufacture, eflicient in use and which when applied to a car or other objects must be mutilated by breaking or rupturing to remove the same.

A further object of this invention is to provide a seal of this character which is folded from a single blank of material,

which also reduces the expense in the manu-' facture thereof.

WVith the above and other objects in view this invention is embodied in the construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter described and as pointed out in the appended claims, the invention being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate Similar parts and in which Figure l is a plan view of the blank from which the seal is folded, parts broken away. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of two stages of the formation of the seal, parts broken away. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the completed seal. Fig. 5 1s a longitudinal section thereof.

' Referring specifically to the drawings, the blank from which the seal is folded, being preferably 'of suitable sheet metal, comprises a body constituting the

8 and 18 which are rectangular form and secured together along one edge thereof. The body section 8 has an arm 10 projecting from one end thereof and a strap 9 projecting from the other end thereof, and from the outer edge of the said body section projects a flap 7. The outer edge of the said flap 7 is folded on the score 30 to form a lip 6, the outer or free end of the strap 9 is provided with an opening 28. and theouter end of the arm 10 is reduced in width to form a tongue 11 and shoulders 22!) at the inner end of the said tongue. The body section 18 is provided at one end with a short flap 26 having an openin; 27 therein and at the other end with an elongated llap 17 having an opening 16 near the outer or free end thereof.

In forming the seal, the outer end of the tongue 11 is bent back to form a catch 12, the same being bent back on the score 13 near the outer end thereof and the arm 10 is folded on the score 14 near the outer end thereof to bring the outer end and tongue 11 against same with the catch 12 disposed inwardly and the said arm is then bent on the score 21 over the body section 8. The flap 7 is then folded over the arm 10, the lip 6 passing over the edge of the said arm and the said parts are then folded over the body section 18, the flap 7 resting or coming against the said body section. The strap 9 isthen passed through the opening 27 in the flap 26 as shown in Fig. 3, and the said flap is then folded over the end of the body section 8. The flap 17 is then folded over the saidparts coming against the body section 8, the strap 9 being passed through the opening 16 and the end 15 of the said flap being folded over the end of the said parts as shown in Figs. 4 and 5 which completes the seal and renders same ready for application to the car or other objects.

It will be noted that the strap 9 in being passed through the

26 and 17 prevents the relative arts from unfolding and securely locks them together.

The seal is applied to the hasp of the car or to any other member in the usual manner and the free or other end thereof is inserted through the

openings

27 and 16 to pass into the socket formed between the body sections and upon pulling the same outward, the tongue 11 is caused to pass through the opening 28 in the end of the strap whereupon the catch 12 engages over the end of the strap to lock the end of the strap within the socket between the catch 12 and shoulders 29. Therefore after the strap has once been inserted through the socket thus formed by the various folded parts, it is impossible to remove same or remove the seal from the car or other objects without multilating the seal by breaking or buckling the same, and it will be seen that in this manner this seal becomes as effective as the eustomary seals in use.

If desired the strap 9 or the outer parts of the socket portion of the seal may bear suitable numbers, or other printed matter, which will of course be governed by the uses to which the seal may be put. it is also understood that the invention is susceptible of alteration in its details within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is:,

1. A seal of the character described formed from a blank and comprising body sections folded upon each other, a tongue Within the body sections and having a catch on the end thereof, a strap project1ng from one body section and having an opening in the outer end thereof, a la folded from the other body section havlng" an opening therein through which the strap passes, and a flap opposite the latterflap folded over the former body sect-ion and having an opening in theouter end thereof through which the said strap passes, whereby the outer end of the the body sections, a tongue folded from the outer end of said arm against same, a catch folded from the outer end of the said tongue, a flap folded from the said body section over the said arm, a strap projecting from the said body section opposite the said arm and having an opening in the outer end thereof, a flap folded from the other bodyv section havin an opening therein through which the said strap passes, and a flap opposite the latter flap folded over the former body section and having an opening in the outer end thereof through which the said strap passes, whereby the outer end of the said strap can be inserted through the openings in the latter flaps to be engaged on the said tongue.
