To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H, MOON, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Adams and State of Iowa, have invented new and uscful Improvements in Mail Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mail bag delivering and receiving apparatus, and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective device of this character, whereby a .mail bag may be delivered from a passing train to a station post or from the station post to the train or simultaneously delivered and received by both the post and the train.
Another object of the invention is to proy vide an apparat-us of 'this class whereby mail may be delivered and received without danger of injury to the said mail.
lVith the above, and other objects in view, which will be more apparent as the nature of the description progresses, the in vention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and approved embodiment of the improvement, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus, illustrating both the mechanism provided by the station and the mechanism provided by the car. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view taken through the train apparatus. Fig. L1 is an end elevation of the station device. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken through the station holder and adjacent the top thereof.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates an ordinary mail car, and the numeral 2 designates a station crane which is arranged in close proximity with the tracks upon which the car passes. The mechanism carried by both the car and the station crane are substantially similar, the station crane comprising a post 3 having an extending top portion 11 which is provided with suitable braces 5, one of which supports a downwardly extending arm 6. i.
Ihe numeral 7 designates the delivery cylinder for the station crane. This cylinder preferably has one of its ends cone shaped as at 8, and arranged between the said cone shaped ends a resilient cushion 9. The opposite end of the c vlinder T is open, and is normally closed through the medium of a hinged door 10. This door 10 is retained upon the cylinder through the medium of a suitable lock 11.
The numeral 13 designates a track which is arranged upon the top of the cylinder T which extends the entire length thereof. The track 12 comprises a pair of spaced members, each arranged a suitable distance above the cylinder and each having one of its ends connected with the said cylinder. The track is adapted to be engaged by a plurality of rollers 13 carried by the arln G. The rollers are preferably arranged in spaced relation with each other, so that the casing 7 is at all times directly balanced upon. the station crane.
The numeral 11 designates the receiving member of.the station crane. This receiving member is supported upon a suitable standard 15, the latter being preferably constructed of some partially resilient material. The receiver la is provided with a flaring mouth l5 and the said receiver is provided adjacent the said mouth with a suitable door 1G. This door is formed with a spring hinge 17, the same being provided upon an offset portion connected with the door proper and the said spring is adapted to normally force the door 1G to a closed position within the receiver. The door is sustained in a normally open position through the medium of a spring catch 1S. This catch is provided with the upwardly extending operating member and the said catch is adapted to be contacted by the delivery member 19 carried by the train when the said member is positioned within the receiver in the Inanner which will be presently set forth. The end of the receiver opposite to that of its flaring mouth 15 is cone shaped, and said cone shaped end is provided with a flexible cushion 20, the latter adapted to partially overcome the force of the delivery member 19. The upper portion or face of the receiver 14 is provided with a longitudinally extending cut away portion 21, the latter adapted to serve as means whereby the rollers 13 will be free to travel through the said receiver without contacting the same when the deliverer 19 is inserted within the receiver 14.
The car mechanism is, as above stated, substantially similar to that heretofore described excepting that the delivery member is supported upon rollers 2l which are secured to the said car. The receiving member 'Q2 is substantially similar to that of the receiving member 14, but the said receiving member is also sustained upon the car. It is to be understood that the delivery member of the station crane alines with the receiving member of the car, and that the receiving member of the crane also registers with the delivery member of the car, so it will be noted that when a car is passing the station it will deliver the mail from the cylinder 19 to the receiver 14 and that the receiver 22 of the said car will catch and hold the cylinder 7 of the station crane.
Having thus fully described the said invention, what I claim is l. In a mail bag catcher and deliverer for cars, a bag holding cylinder, said cylinder being provided with a track, the car being provided with an arm having rollers engaging the track, and a receiving station provided with a receiving member adapted to engage and remove the cylinder from the track.
2. AIn a mail bag catcher and deliverer for cars, a bag receiving cylinder, said cylinder having one of its ends open and provided vvith a door, the opposite end of the cylinder being cone shaped, the said cylinder being formed with a longitudinally extending track, the said car being provided with a downwardly extending arm, rollers upon the frame, and a delivery stationhaving a receiver adapted to engage the said deliverer and to remove the same from its track.

A mail bag delivering apparatus for a car, said deliverer comprising a cylinder having one of its ends opening and a door for said opening, the opposite end of the said cylinder being cone shaped, resilient bumper members within the cone shaped end of the cylinder, the said cylinder having its face formed with a longitudinally extending track open at one of its ends, the said car being formed with a downwardly Copies of this patent may be obtained for extending arm having rollers adapted to engage with the track, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination with a receiving and a delivering apparatus, said delivering apparatus comprising a cylinder having one of its ends cone shaped and its opposite end open, means for holding the cylinder, the receiving member also comprising a cylinder having an open ared mouth, said cylinder being provided with a spring cushy ioned door, a latch for sustaining the door in a normally open position and said latch adapted to be contacted by the cylinder when the same is inserted within the receiver to close the door.
