FUEL-IGNITING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO Hnnnnn, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Igniting Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device for igniting the fuel in a stove or range by the employment of gas and which is available to secure the ignition or combustion of coal in the grate without the necessity of using kindling.
The invention relates to the class of igniting devices which comprise an inclosed hollow body having upstanding burner tubes, and means for the connection with the hollow body of a gas supply conduit.
One object of the invention is to construct the body of the device in the form of a hollow frame instead of in the form of an inclosed box of comparatively large capacity, so that the pressure of the gas supplied into the hollow body and for dehvery through and burning at the tops of the upstanding tubes will not be lowered.
Another object of the invention is to provide means so that the igniting device when inserted within the fire box below the grate may be supported in proper position for the burner flames to pass upwardly through the grate openings and without the necessity of manually holding the device durin the time the gas is burning and the coa is being ignited,
Another object is to so construct the device that it is adaptable for employment by being inserted sidewise through the stove hearth into the ash box, or as could only be done in some cases by being inserted longitudinally at the opening through the hearth under the end of the grate.
The invention is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and set forth in the claims.

of the igniting device having the form of an inclosed elongated rectangular frame which comprises the front and rear hollow members a a and the transverse uniting hollow end members a a and said frame is made with integral bridges f f which extend between the front and rear hollow portions a a of said frame on the plane of its bottom.
B represents a hollow hub or apertured and internally screw threaded extension centrally at the front of the hollow body, and B represents a similar threaded apertured extension hub at the end of the hollow body, the same being provided with a closing screw plug B C represents a section of rigid pipe provided with a handle enlargement C with which the flexible hose D may be connected, and which hose, as is understood, is to have connection with the gas jet of a tubular or any available gas supply.
G G represent a plurality of upstanding tubes formed screw threaded at their lower end portions and screw engaged in threaded vertical openings therefor in the front and rear hollow members of the tubular frame like body A. These burner tubes have the openings therethrough for the greater portion of their length of comparatively large diameter; but these openings are very much contracted at their lower portions, as shown at c; and the burner tubes also have radial openings 1) for air at at their lower portions but slightly above the top of the hollow frame.
J J represent a pair of longitudinally slotted bars provided on the under side of the hollow frame like body which are slidable longitudinally in extension endwise beyond the ends of the body and are provided with downwardly turned portions j at their outer ends. These slidable plates have longitudinal slots h therein; and g g represent headed guide screws the shanks of which are extended through slots h and into certain of the bridges f, their heads being in engagement with the under sides of the bars marginally of the slots. m m represent binding screws the shanks of which are also extended through the said slots and with screw engagements into other of the said bridges f f while their heads have confining engagements against the under sides of the slidable bars.
Preparatory to making use of the device the same is inserted by grasping the handle U in the fire box under the grate, and properly positioned so that its burner tubes, which, as indicated in the drawings, have staggered relations, will be coincident with or extend upwardly between the grate openings and then while the device is still held by the handle the slidable bars are distended to have crowding engagements against the opposite ends of the fire box and are temporarily confined by tightening the binding screws m.
No further requirement is now necessary on the part of the person to hold the device in its operative position, and the gas being turned on and lighted, the igniting device may be left in the place in which it is adjusted and supported for an indefinite time and until the coal in the grate has become thoroughly ignited, whereupon the binding screws will be loosened, permit-ting the inward contract-ion or withdrawal of the slidable bars, and the device may be removed from under the grate.
In some cases the construction of the hearth is such that the opening into the fire box is at the end thereof instead of along the entire length of the fire box; and as a provision to meet such condition the handle pipe, as apparent, is interchangeable from its position in the apertured connection hub B to its position in the apertured connection hub B at the end,the screw plug B being removed from the latter and inserted in the one B.
By having the bridges f f positioned across the opening between the front and rear portions of the hollow elongated frame like body, the threading engagements of the guide and binding screws in such bridges occasion no leakage of gas from within the hollow body as would be the case if such screws penetrated the wall of the frame inclosing the gas chamber therein.
The gas issuing from the hollow body through the contracted lower end passages 0 at the bases of the tubes commingles with a copious supply of air entering through the larger radial openings 1) so that all conditions are established for perfect combustion uniformly at the upper ends of all of the burner tubes.

I claim 1. In a fuel igniting device, a body having the form of an incloscd rectangular frame, comprising hollow front and rear portions and hollow end portions uniting said front and rear portions, and made with integral bridges extending between the front and rear hollow portions of said frame, and said frame having a gas inlet, and provided with a plurality of burner tubes connected with the top of, and upstanding above, said body, and communicating with the chamber in said body and having air openings in their lower portions but above the body, a pipe for supplying gas connected with said inlet, a pair of longitudinally slotted bars on the base of the said body which are slidable longitudinally in extension endwise beyond the ends of the body and are provided with downwardly turned extremities, headed guide screws having their shanks extended through the slots of said bars and into certain of the bridges, and binding screws, the shanks of which are also extended through said slots, into other of said bridges, while their heads have confining engagements against the said bars.
2. In a fuel igniting device, an inclosed hollow body provided with a plurality of upstanding burner tubes communicating with the chamber in said body and having air openings in their lower portions but above the body, the said body having screw threaded openings one centrally entering the side of the hollow body and the other entering its end, a rigid pipe section connected with one of said inlet openings, and serving both as a gas supplying conduit and as a supporting handle, a screw-plug for closing the other of said inlet openings, a pair of bars on the base of the said body which are slidable longitudinally in extension endwise beyond the end of the body, and means for confining them in any desired degree of extension.
