Specification at Letter: Patent.
Application fled Hay 8B, 1910. Burial 80. 684579.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it, known that I, Josarn Bmuo msua, Jr.,,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waterville, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings, of which the following is a full and complete specification.
My invention relates to devices for coulin fire-hose to water-plugs, and has for Its 0 ject the provision 0 a evice by which the hose may be coupled to the plug instantaneously by simply pushing the coupling-sleeve on the plug connection; and it consists in the provision of 'a' plurality of s ring-actuated jaw members having serratlons or teeth to engage the threads of theplug connection, the outer ends of the jaw members being beveled to cause them to retreat into the coupling-sleeve when it is being placed on the connection. The back sides of the jaw members are formed with the means for actuating t e clamping projections-that engage inclined ears on the inner side of a ring mounted on a sleeve to move the jaw members from engagement X'ith the plug connection in uncoupling the ose.
My invention will be described hereinafter in detail and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- F1 re 1 is a side view of my improvedcoup ing-sleeve, showin it in position on plug connection and a ra ent of hose in place; Fi -2 a cross-section of the sleeve through t e 1aw members; Fig. 3, an end view with the cover plate 19 removed; Fig. 4, a detail view of the operatin -ring,; Figs. 5 and ,6, detail views done of t e jaw members; and Fig.7, a detailed sectional view of the interior ofthe cou ling-ring showing members out of clamping osition. Similar reference c aractersindicate corresponding parts in the drawings through-v out the several views. v
My improved coupling consists of a sleeve 1, threaded at one end, as shown at 2, to reccive the end of thehose A while its other .end is formed with a c lindricalfichamber; 3 to receive the thread yconnection B emplt ilyed-on firelugs. g
wall o the chamber Bis provided with .a plurality offopenings 4, of which there should be four or more, having their outermost and innermost sides beveled on parallel planes, as shown at 5, and 6, respectively, and 7 indicates clamping or aw members formed with serrations or bro en threads 8 to engfge the threads on the pin connection B, t e inner and outer sides 0 Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
.the clamping members being beveled, as
shown-at 9 and 10, to engage the beveled surfaces and 6 in the openings 4. 11 indicates angular pins secured to the sleeve-1, and 12 coil-springs secured to said pins and clam mg members 7 said springs normally ten ing to move the clampin members into engagement with the threads connection B. he outer portions of the serrated side of the members 7 are beveled, as shown at 13-, so that in placing the sleeve n position on the connection B the clam mgmembers are moved back to permit tiie sleeve to be placed on the connection, and when the sleeve is imposition the springs 12 move the clamping members inwardly into engagement with the connection B. The rear sides of clamping members 7 are formed with projections 14, and 15 indicates a r ng revolubly mounted on sleeve 1 and having inclined flanges 16 onits inner side to engage projections 14 and move the clampin members 7-out of a'clamping position, sa1d r1ng being rovided with laterally extendlng lugs 1' to receive the ordmary ivlvrench used in coupling and uncoupling ose.
18indicatescoiltprings connecting sleeve.
1- and ring 15 to hol the flanges 16 normally out of engagement with pro'ections 14.
19 indicates an annular p ate mounted on threaded shoulder 20 toclose the opening between ring15 and sleeve 1.
' It will be understood that as the connection B is ordinarily constructed it is threaded to receive the cou ling-sleeves as ordinaril constructed an in my improved coupllng I have formed the serrationsonbroken threads 8 on the members 7 so as to fit the threads of the connection as ordinarily constructed, but it will be a parent that after my coupling has been a o ted the connection and members may formed with tongues and grooves or. other suitable construction, so that I do. not limit myself to the construction shown except where s e- .cifically. stated in the claims appen ed 21 indicates a asket between the inner end of connection g and shoulder 22 in the sleeve 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a hose-coupling, a sleeve having openings in its side walls with their outermost and innermost edges beveled on parallel planes, couplin members mounted 'in said openings and iavi'ng their edges beveled to correspond with the beveled edges of the openings, angular pins secured to the sleeve, splrings secured to said pins and engaging t e coupling members to hold them normally in clamping position, and means'to actuate said couphng members into uncoupling positions against the resistance of said s rings, substantially as shown and describe 2. In a hose-couplin a sleeve having openings in its side wa is with. their outeredges beveled on parallel planes, couplin members mounted in said openings and aving their edges beveled to correspond with the beveled edges of the openings, angular pins secured to the sleeve, springs secured to said pins and engaging the coupling members to hold them normally in clamping position, inclined projections on the rear sides of the coupling members, and a rin revolubly mounted on the sleeve and rovi ed with inclined flanges to engage the inclined faces of said projections, substantially as shown and described. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
most and innermost JOSEPH BEAUCHESNE, J11.
