This invention relates to improvements in cushion heels for boots and shoes.
One object of the invention is to provide a heel of this character having an improved means for attaching the same to the shoe whereby the fastening devices will be prevented from coming into contact with the ground and will be relieved from lateral strain.
Another object is to provide a cushion heel having an improved construction of tread surface provided with means for increasing the wearing qualities thereof and preventing t e same from slipping.
With these and other objects inrview, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a portion of a shoe sole and heel showing the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the line 22 of F ig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the metal,
sockets for the counter-sunk heads of the tubular rivets employed in connection with the heel; Fig. 4 is a-similar view of one of the tubular rivets; and, Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the. fastening nails for the heels.
- Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 denotes my improved heel which comprises an inner section 2 and an outer section 3. The section 2 is formed of soft rubber or similar yielding material whereby said section forms a cushlon for the heel. The outer section 3 is formed of leather or similar material whereby a tread surface is' provided for the heel, said outer section or tread surface being cemented or otherwise secured to the outer surface of the inner section.
In the outer section or tread surface of heel, form wear resisting and anti-sli elements. The wear on the tread sur 0f the heel is further resisted and the slipthe heel is formed a series of tapered recesses 4 in which are arranged conical shaped metal sockets 5 the outer edges of which are flush with the outer surface of the tread portion 3 of the heel. the sockets 5 and inserted through the cushion section 2 of the heel are tubular rivets 6 having flared heads 7 which fit the conical inner walls of the sockets as shown. The inner ends of the tubular rivets 6 are Engaged with upset or clenched into engagement with the inner side of the cushion section 2 of they heel thereby forming additional means-for holding the sections 2 and 3 of the heel together and for retaining the sockets 5 in place. Inserted through the tubular rivets 6 and adapted to be driven into the heel ortion 1 of the shoe sole are fastening nai s 8 having conical or taperedheads 9 which fit into the counter sunk outer ends of the rivets whereby the outer sides of the nail heads are substantially flush with the outer ends or heads of the rivets. The heads of the rivets and of the nails are of such size that the same will be countersunk to a considerable distance in the sockets 5 and will not therefore come into engagement with the ground when pressure is applied to the heel thus enabling the full benefit of the elastic or cushioning sect-ion 2'to be obtained and also preventing any wear on the heads of either the rivets or fastening nails. The
outer edges of the sockets 5 being flush with the outer or tread surface 3 of the P ace 3 ping thereof further prevented by a series of horse shoe shaped metal plates 10 which are driven into the outer section 3 of the heel around the rear edge of the same as shown.
By constructing and arranging the fastemng devices of the heel as herein shown and described it will be seen that when weight is applied to the tread surface of the heel and the cushion section thus compressed that the sockets 5 will slide back loosely on the tubular rivets 6 whichare hold fast by the nails 8 thus relieving the rivets and the nails of any strain or wear. The nails and rivets when thus arranged will also offer no resistance to the yielding action of the cushioning section 2 of the heel.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and arrangement of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A heel of the character described comprising a cushion section, a tread section secured thereto, metal sockets arranged in said tread section, tubular rivets having a countersunk engagement with said sockets and having their inner ends clenched into engagement with the inner surface of the cushion section of the heel, and fastening nails inserted through said tubular rivets and driven into the heel portion of the shoesole whereby said cushion heel is secured to the shoe, said nails having their heads counbersunk in the heads of the rivets.
2. A cushion heel comprising an inner yielding section and an outer tread section, a
series of conical metal sockets arranged in said tread section, said sockets. having their outer edges flush with the outer side of the tread section, tubular rivets inserted throu h said sockets and cushion portions of t 0 heel, said rivets having their ends clenched against the inner surface of the cushion section of the heel, conical shaped heads formed on the outer ends of said rivets, said heads having a countersunk engagement with said sockets whereby the latter are held in place, fastening nails inserted through said tubular rivets and adapted to be driven into the heel portion of the shoe sole whereby said cushion heel is yieldingly fastened by said nails, conical shaped heads formed on the-outer ends of the nails, said heads having countersunk engagement with the heads of the rivets.
