The rack is preferably L-shaped in cross section, and the teeth 27 are in its horizontal member; its vertical member is provided with longitudinal slots 29 which loosely receive bolts 30 or their equivalents, that extend into the said table, thus guiding the said slide. The movement of the said sliding rack C controls the movement of the needle B. and this is accomplished by means of an endless belt 31 that passes around the pulleys 1H and 23, and is attached in any suitable or approved manner at one of its stretches to the upper end of the needle-operating arm 16 as is best shown in Fig. 1.
A slot 33 is produced in the lower portion of the pillar 11, and through this slot a foot treadle or lever 33 is passed. being fulcruined at the rear of the said pillar and extending beyond its front. Said lever occupies a diagonal position relatively to the front portion of the base, so that the operator will have ready control of the sliding rack C. \Vithin said pillar this lever is connected by means of links 34 with a beam 35, which beam extends out through slots 36 in direction of the ends of the machine. and said beam 35 occupies a position at. an angle to the trcadle 33 and at a slight angle to the bed A. The beam 35 is held in an upper position by means of springs 37 attached to the pillar 11 and having upward hearing at the end portions of the beam as is shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
A bed plate 38 is located over the central portion of the table 12, extending in direction of the ends of the machine, and said bed plate is spaced apart from the table 12 by means of a. supporting bar 39, which is more or less diagonally located relative to the said bed plate and is longer than the bed plate, extending beyond its ends. In fact. the supporting plate 39 extends practically from one corner of the bed plate 38 to the opposing diagonal corner. The said supporting plate 39 has its upper end portions recessed or cut away as shown at 40 in Fig. 3. At opposite sides of the supporting plate 39, at its ends, two sockets 41 are formed, which sockets are secured also at their upper ends to opposite diagonal corners of the bed plate 88 as is best shown in Fig. 2.
A guide plate D is located above the bed plate 38. and is spaced apart therefrom, the said guide plate D being preferably transversely arched. its upper face being its convexed face. and the weft cane fabric H is made to rest upon this guide plate D while the diagonal strand H is being passed through the said fabric by means of said needle B. The guide plate D is provided with a series of upwardly-extending pins 42. Said pins are in two rows and are staggered in their general arrangement. the pins of one row being opposite the center of the spaces between the pins of the opposing row as is indicated in Figs. 4, 5 and T. The needle B in operation passes over said guide plate D which likewise may be termed a pin plate, passing between the rows of pins and through a suitable guide 6 located at the inner end of the said guide plate as is illustrated in Fig. 3. The guide plate D is further provided with a series of transverse centrally located slots 43, and said slots are so located that they are between two diagonally opposing pins 4-2 on said guide plate D as is best shown in Fig. T. so that a pin of one row and a diagonall opposite pin of the opposing row will be located between each two slots. The pins 42 are adapted to pass up through the meshes in the woven cane prior to a diagonal strand being woven therein. The said guide plate D is held yieldingly spaced apart from the bed plate 38 by means of downwardly-extending bolts -14, two of which are usually located adjacent to each end of the said guide plate. and said bolts are loosely passed through suit able openings in the bed. plate 38, and are provided with nuts 46 at their ends, so as to limit the upward movement of the said guide plate. Springs 45 are coiled around said bolts 44 between the two plates 38 and D, the spring serving to return the guide plate D to its normal position after having been relieved from pressure.
A depressing plate or bar E is located above the guide plate D; and said depressing plate 15 is provided with a series of downwardly-extending fingers 48 arranged to enter the spaces between diagonally opposing pins 4-2 to press and hold down the warp strands of the fabric when the depressing bar is carried downward taking with it the guide bar D. In order that the fingers 48 shall not slip during such operation a recess 49 is made in the bottom of each finger 48. capable of receiving a strand of the fabric. As the depressing plate E is forced. downward to depress the warp strands, retaining hooks F extend upward and rearward through the slots 43 in the guide plate D, which hooks receive and hold elevated or raised the weft strands adjacent to the pins 42?, as is shown best in Fig. 7; and at such time the needle B in passing between the rows of pins 4-2 will pass likewise between the depressed warp and the elevated weft strands, and thus weave the diagonal strand carried by the needle through the body of the fabric as is shown in Fig. 8, wherein the fabric is designated as H and the diagonal strands as H. These retaining hooks F are pivoted upon. two brackets 50 rigidly secured. to the body plate 38 as is shown in Fig. 3, and each retaining hook F provided with a reduced foot section just below its pivot, and said foot sections 51 enter recesses in the upper edges of curved cradle bars 52, the upper ed es of which bars are more or less concave as is shown in Fig. 5, for one bar. These cradle bars 52 are held properly spaced and have concerted action by front and rear tie rods 53 and 54, and sprlngs 55 secured to the table 12, or the supporting bar 39 at its rear, are carried up over the bed plate 38 to an engagement with the under surfaces of the said tie bars 53 and 54 for the purpose of keeping the cradle bars up to their work with reference to the hooks F. The normal position of the retaining hooks F is that shown in Figs. 4 and 5, wherein it will be observed that they are slightly below the upper face of the guide plate D, which is in its upper or normal position, and that the hooks have an upward and a forward inclination, whereupon by laterally moving the cradle bars 52 in a forward direction the said bars cause the said retaining hooks to assume a vertical position, said position being assumed as the guide plate D is carried downward, thus causing the said hooks to catch and receive the weft strands and hold the same elevated as the fingers 48 on the depressin plate E engage and hold the warp strands epressed. The movement of the cradle bars 52 forward and rearward is automatically accomplished preferably in the following manner: Rearwardly-extending links 56 are secured to the rear tie bar 54, usually at its end portions; and these links 56 are attached to a connecting rod 57, and said connecting rod is pivotally connected with downwardlyextending links 58. Said links in their turn are secured to a crank shaft 59, mounted to turn in suitable bearings 60 supported by the table 12, the crank arm 61 of the shaft 59 being given an upward and somewhat of a forward inclination as shown in Fig. 1. The shaft 59, which has a rocking motion, is limited in such motion by producing a curved slot 62 in one of the bearings 60 as shown in Fig. 6, and securing a downwardlyextending crank arm 63 to said shaft 59, the horizontal member of which crank arm has movement in the slot 62. The movement of the crank shaft 59 and the operation of the cradle bars 52 are accomplished by carrying the front or forward end of a lever arm 64 beyond and beneath the front or forward side edge of the bed plate 38 through one of the openings 40 in its supporting plate 39 as is shown in Figs. 1 and 3. This lever arm 64 is preferabl given a compound curve, and its rear en is pivoted to a standard 65 carried by the table 12 as best shown in Fig. 4, while a curved link 66 is attached to the lever arm 64 and to the upper end of the crank arm 61, the curvature of said link 66 being in direction of the forward or front side of the machine. The forward or front end of the lever arm 64 is received in a recess 67, produced at one side of the lower end of a trip finger 69 that is secured to the depressing plate E and extends down at the front or forward side portions of said depressing plate E, the guide plate D and the bed plate 38. The depressing plate E is operated through the medium of the treadle 33, and to that end downwardly extending rods 70 are attached to the end portions of said depressing plate E, which rods pass down through the sockets 41 and the table 12 to an engagement with the outer end portion of the beam 35.
In the operation of the machine, the parts being in their normal position best shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 5, the cane fabric H. is threaded over the pins 42 on the guide plate D and the treadle 33 is pressed downward, which will carry the beam 35 down, placing its springs 37 under tension, and will also cause the depressing bar or plate E to be drawn downward until its fingers 48 engage with the weft strands of the fabric, whereupon the said plate E is continued downward until the guide plate D is depressed against the tension of its springs 45 far enough to uncover the upper ends of the retaining hooks F, bringing such portions in such relation to the weft strands of the fabric that when the hooks are moved rearward they will engage with said weft strands. Such rearward movement is brought about approximately when the depressing plate E has reached the limit of its downward travel by reason of the operating arm 69 forcing the front end of the lever arm 64 dowlr ward, thus pushing forward the connected cradle bars 52, thereby bringing all of the hooks F to an upper position, causing them to receive and hold elevated the weft strands. While the treadle 33 is yet depressed the slide 0 is operated past the needle B over the guide plate D between its rows of pins 42 and consequently above the warp strands and below the weft strands as is shown in Fig. 7. An end of the diagonal stand H is now passed through the eye of the needle B, as is also shown in Fig. 7. The operating mechanism for the needle is now reversed, carrying the needle back to its normal position and causing the attached diagonal strand to be drawn through the path of the needle. \Vhen this is accomplished the diagonal strand is caught in any desired manner, and the treadle 33 is releasedqvhereupon the springs 37 act to force the depressing plate E upward, and the operating arm 69 rocks the front end of the lever arm 64 upward, thus restoring the confining hooks F to their .normal position, and at the same time the springs 45 restore the guide plate D to its normal position. The fabric H may now be shifted to receive another diagonal strand, and the operation of the machine is repeated, as described.
It may be here remarked that the shafts 5T and 59 belonging to the controlling mechanism for the hook retaining devices F are steadied in their action by means of a spring f, shown in Figs. and 5.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In machines for inserting diagonal strands in woven cane fabric, a guide plate for the cane fabric, a depressing device for the warp strands, pivoted elevating devices for the weft strands. and means for simultaneously operating the depressing and elevating devices relatively to the guide plate.
ln machines for inserting diagonal strands in woven cane fabric, a guide plate for the woven fabric, a depressing device for the warp strands, operating to and from the guide plate and also acting upon the guide plate to depress the latter, elevating devices operating through the guide plate when the latter is depressed to elevate the weft strands, and means for operating said depressing and elevating devices.
In machines for inserting diagonal strands in woven cane fabric, a guide plate for the woven fabric, a depressing device for the warp strands, the said device having depressing action upon the guide plate, elevating devices for the weft strands operating when the guide plate is depressed, a needle adapted to carry a diagonal strand, which needle passes between the two said devices and the strands operated upon thereby, means for operating said needle, and means for simultaneously operating the said two devices relatively to the guide plate, the operating mechanism It)! the said devices and the operating mechanism for said needle having timed action.
4. In mechanism for inserting diagonal strands in woven cane fabric, a movable spring-supported guide plate for the fabric, a depressing device for the Warp strands movable to and from and also adapted for having depressing action upon the guide plate, elevating devices for the weft strands, independent of and operating through the guide plate when the latter is depressed, and means for operating the two said devices.
In machines for inserting diagonal strands in woven cane fabric, a movable, spring-supported guide plate for the fabric, a depressing device for the warp strands, movable to and from and also having depressing action upon the guide plate, elevating devices for the weft strands, independent of and operating through the guide plate, pivotal supports for the elevating de; vices. and means for operating the depressing device and for rocking the elevating devices.
(5. In machines for inserting diagonal strands in woven cane fabric, a guide plate for the fabric, a depressing device for the warp strands, movable to and from and also having depressing action upon the guide plate, hook-shaped elevating devices for the weft strands, independent of and operating through the guide plate, pivotal supports for said hook devices, and means for simultaneously operating the depressing device and for rocking the hook devices.
7. In machines for inserting diagonal strands in Woven cane fabric, a spring-supported guide plate, having a series of pins extending from its upper face, adapted to enter the meshes of the fabric, said pins being in rows and the pins of one row staggered with relation to the pins of the other row, a needle adapted to slide on the guide plate between the said pins, a device for operating the said needle, a depressing device movable to and from the guide plate and adapted for depressing action thereon and for engagement with the warp strands of the fabric, and elevating devices located below the guide plate and operated there-- through, diagonally-opposite pins thereon, and means for operating the depressing and the elevating devices.
8. In machines for inserting diagonal strands in woven cane fabric,a tension-controlled guide plate for the fabric, depressing fingers arranged for concerted movement to and from the guide plate and for depressing action thereon, said fingers being adapted for engagement with the Warp strands of the fabric, pivoted hook-shaped elevating devices located below the guide plate and adapted for passage transversely through the guide plate when said plate is depressed, connections between all the elevating devices, and means for imparting vertieal movement to the depressing device and rocking movement to the elevating devices.
9. In a machine for inserting diagonal strands in woven cane fabric, a support, a guide for the cane fabric, springs intervening between said support and said guide, acting as bearings for the guide, pins located upon the outer face of said guide, which pins are in rows, the pins of one row being opposite the spaces between the pins of the opposing row, said rows of pins serving as a race for a needle to carry the diagonal strand, said pins being adapted to enter the meshes of the woven cane fabric, means for depressing said guide, and elevating devices for the fabric, located on said support and extending when the guide is depressed into openings formed transversely in said guide between diagonally opposing pins.
10. In a machine for inserting diagonal strands in woven cane fabric, a support, a transversely arched guide for the fabric, located above the said support, springs engaging with opposing faces of the support and the said guide, said guide being provided with rows of pins forming a needle race, the pins of the rows being diagonally opposite each other, said plate being likewise provided with transverse openings between diagonally opposing pins of the rows, elevating devices located below said guide, which elevating devices consist of hookshaped members fulcrumed upon the said support, the hook ends of the members entering the slots in the guide, and means for simultaneously rocking the said hook members, when the depressing device is raised and lowered.
11. In a machine for inserting diagonal strands in woven cane fabric, the combination with a bed, a support therefor, a treadle carried by the support, a spring controlled beam having sliding movement in said support, connections between the beam and the said treadle, guides located on the said bed, arms extending through said guides and attached to the said beam, and a depressing device for the warp strands of the fabric, which depressing device consists of a bar carried by said arms and fingers extending down from said bar, of a spring-controlled guide plate located below said depressing device, the guide plate being adapted to receive the woven fabric and being provided with a series of pins to enter the meshes of the fabric and with slots between the pins, said depressing device in its downward movement being adapted to engage with said guide plate and force the same downward, and elevating devices consisting of a series of hook-shaped members pivoted to a fixed support below said guide plate, the hook portions of which members extend into the openings in the guide plate, devices for rocking the said hook members, and means carried by said depressing device for operating the said rocking mechanism and timing the operation thereof.
12. In a machine for inserting diagonal strands in woven cane fabric, the combination with a bed, a support therefor, a treadle carried by the support, a spring controlled beam having sliding movement in said sup port, connections between the beam and said treadle, guides located on said bed, arms extending through said guides and attached to said beam, and a depressing device for the warp strands of the fabric, which depressing device consists of a bar carried by said arms and fingers extending down from said bar, of a spring-controlled guide plate located below said depressing device, said guide plate being adapted to receive the woven fabric, being provided with a series of pins to enter the meshes of the fabric and with slots between said pins, said depressing device in its downward movement being adapted to engage with said guide plate and force the same downward, and elevating devices consisting of a series of hook'shaped members pivoted to the fixed support below said guide-plate, the hook portions of which members extend into the openings in the guide plate, devices for rocking said hook members and means carried by the depressing device for operating said rocking mechanism and timing the operation thereof, a rocker arm extending through the bed, a needle adapted to carry a diagonal strand having its pointed end resting upon the guide plate and its outer end having crank connection with the rocker arm, pulleys located at opposite ends of the bed, a belt connected with the rocker arm and passed over said pulleys, a pinion carried by the shaft of one pulley, and a slide mounted upon the bed, having a rack member for engagement with said pinion.
