To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'IIANS \VILLI METTLER, a citizen of the Swiss Republic, and resident of 176 Freiest-rasse, Zurich, Switzerland, have invented a certain new and useful Device for Measuring and Indicating Lengths ofWVoven Materials, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In measuring and printing devices h therto employed for textile material the rotation of the type wheel cccentrically connected with the main axle has been eifected by a stop rigidly attached to arfixed frame.
which stop is situated in the track of the outer semi-circle of the unit printing wheel which is moved forward each time by one tenth of a revolution. (The outward lying portion of the printing wheels when the measuring and printing device rotates at normal velocity possesses a proportionably high velocity of rotation which produces a great shock when a unit printing wheel and stop synchronize. As the pushing forward is effected rapidly a great momentum is created. This momentum renders it necessary to arrange rigid pawls for the control of the printing wheels (for checking the working) in addition to the spring pawls (for preventing retrograde motion). Difficulty is encountered in this because the printing wheel can only be brought into the zero position after the rigid pawls have been released by hand. In addition it is not possible to reverse the machine without causing an undesirable rotation of the print: ing wheels as they would push again against the stop fixed in the frame and turn.
In the arrangement according to the pres ent invention the rotation of the unit printing wheel is effected from the main axle, on which a toothed wheel loosely rotates and meshes with a larger cog wheel fixed on the unit printing wheel. The toothed wheel constitutes at the same time a brakepulley and is provided for this purpose with serframe. A spring controlled sliding piece in the fixed frame is actuated by a cam disk I fitted to the main axle which periodically meshes with these teeth. When moving forward the sliding piece engages in the brake pulley of the toothed wheel, preventing it from turning while the large cog wheel fastoned to the unit printing wheel turns on placing the unit printing wheel into the Zero position it is only necessary to turn this wheel in the direction opposite to that of the pushing forward and the sliding piece in the fixed frame is pressed outward by the inclined planes of the teeth of the brake pulley provided in the toothed wheel and removed from the cam disk. The same process takes place when the machine is reversed.
In the drawing Figure 1 shows a vertical section on the line A A of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
In the frame 1 of the device the main shaft 2 is arranged and has fixed on it the wheels 3 and 3 apart from each other. The printing wheels 4 and 4 cccentrically arranged between the wheels 3 and 3 on the main shaft have hollow journals Which are rotatively arranged in the disks 3 and 5. A cog wheel 5 is rigidly connected with the journal of the unit printing wheel 4 and engages with a toothed wheel 6 placed rotatively on the main shaft 2 which forms at the same time a clutch brake and for that purpose is provided with serrated teeth on one surface. In the frame 1 a sliding piece 8 is arranged which is controlled by a spring 9 having a tendency to engagethe sliding piece 8 with the clutch brake 7. On the main shaft 2 a disk 18having a cam edgeis fixed, and acts in contrary direction to that of the spring 9 on the sliding piece 8 infsuch a manner that the spring 9 is intermittently compressed and the sliding piece 8 put out of engagement with the clutch brake 7 The print-ing wheels 4 and 4L a-re rigidly connected with ratchet wheels 10; and 10 which mesh with spring pawls 11 and 11 provided with rollers and situatedon the wheels 3 and 3. The pivot of the unit printing. wheel 4.- is arranged with aicog wheel 5 and the journal of the tens print-ing wheel 4: is rigidly connected with a cog wheel 5 which interlocks with an axially adjustable toothed wlreel 6 rotatively placed on the main shaft 2 which wheel is solid with a clutch brake 7 having serrations on its edge opposite the fixed frame 1. This clutch brake 7 in the frame 1 (as in the case of the sliding piece 8 and the clutch brake 7) operates in conjunction with a sliding piece 8' which is controlled by a spring 9 and is operated by a camdisk 18 fixed on the main shaft 2 in manner similar to that of the sliding piece 8. Against the reverse side of the clutch brake 7 a bifurcated lever arm 15 of a double lever 15 is rotatively located on the wheel 3. The second lever arm 15 of the double lever 15 pressed through the action of a spring 20, arranged on the shaft 2 between the clutch brake 7 and the frame 1 against a cam disk 18 provided with a cam track on its inner surface; this cam disk is fastened on a shaft 12 which is pushed through the hollow journal of the printing wheels at and 4t and firmly connected with the unit printing wheel 4t. At each tenth forward movement of the unit printing wheel a that is to say at the time it com pletes the last tenth of a revolution, the cam disk 13 operates the double lever 15 in such a manner that the clutch brake 7 engages with the sliding piece 8 and the tens printing wheel 4: is moved forward. (In Fig. 1 this operative position of the cam disk 13 is shown.)
The printing wheels 4 and a are each fitted with ten type pieces let or 14: arranged at regular distances around the circumference. These type pieces pass over a coloring roller 17 before they come to the printing stage. The journals of the printing wheels f and 4: are provided with hand wheels 16 and 16 by means of which the printing wheels are turned and brought back into the zero position. The main shaft 2 carries the driving cog wheel 19. The rotation of the tens printing wheel could be effected in a manner different from that described above. Various arrangements, for example such as are carried out in rotary counting may be applied.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device for measuring and indicating lengths of woven material, the combination of a main-shaft, printing-wheels including a unit wheel arranged eccentrically of the main-shaft, a clutch brake rotatable on the mainshaft, a toothed wheel rigid with the clutch brake, a driving cog fixed on the unit printing wheel and engaging said toothed wheel, a cam disk on the mainshaft, and sliding piece actuated by said cam disk and adapted to engage said clutch brake to periodically shift said unit printing wheel.
2. In a device for measuring and indicating lengths of woven material, the combination of a main-shaft, printing wheels including units and tens wheels arranged eccentrically of the main shaft, a clutch brake (7) rotatable on the main-shaft, a toothed wheel rigid .with said clutch brake, a cog wheel rigid with the unit printing wheel and meshing with said toothed wheel, a cam disk on the main-shaft, a sliding piece actuated by said cam disk and adapted to engage said clutch brake to periodically shift said unit printing wheel, a second clutch brake (7) rotatably and axially dis placeably arranged on the main-shaft, a rotatably arranged double lever, means for yieldably pressing the second clutch brake against said lever, a cam disk (13) actuated by the unit wheel for pressing said double lever against the second clutch brake and moving the second clutch brake, a sliding piece adapted, when the latter is thus moved by the double lever, to engage the second clutch brake to shift the tens wheel, and a cam disk (18) on the main-shaft for moving said last named sliding piece.
3. In a device for measuring and indicat ing lengths of woven material, the combination of a main-shaft, printing wheels including units and tens wheels arranged eccentrically thereof, a clutch brake rotatably arranged on the main-shaft, a toothed wheel rigid with the clutch brake, a driving cog wheel fixed to the unit printing wheel and engaging said toothed wheel, a cam disk on the main shaft and a sliding piece actuated by the cam disk for periodically engaging the clutch brake, supporting wheels carried on the main shaft and carrying said printing wheels, and means connected to the printing wheels by which they are moved to their Zero position.
