HARRY C. .STICKEL F STAR JUNCTINrPENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-TRUCK To all'whom it may coment:
Be 1t known that I, HARRY C'. STIGKEL, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Star i `and useful Car-Truck, of which the followv' Junction, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new ing is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in car trucks.
Heretofore when the springs of a. car
truck become weakened and permit the bol- -ster to sink and cause the car coupling to drop below its normal position and interfere.
withfthe proper coupling of the cars, it has been the practice to interpose a board between the springs and thebolster for elevating the latter..
The object of the ,present invention is to lmprovethe construction of car trucks, and to provide'a simple, strong and efficient car truck of comparatively inexpensive construction, equipped with means for enabling the springs and the bolster to be readily adjusted in a vertical direction to hold the same at the proper elevation to maint-ain the car coupling at the standard height.`
the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car truck, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portionof the same.y Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is 'a vertical sectional -view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a.
horizontal sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of thespring piank. Fig. 9'is a detail perspective view of the bolster retaining plate.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, 1 designates a side frame, constructed of cast metal, or other suitable material and provided with a central bolster receiving opening 2 and having vertical colum'nguides 3 at, 'opposite sldes of the opening. The truck bolster 4 is interlocked with the column guides by means of oppo Specification of Iletters Patent.

bolster. The bolster .may be -of any preferred construction, and the central opening 2 of the side frame 1 is enlarged at the top at opposite sides at 6, the extensions or enlargements 6 -of the openingbeing located above' the column guides, and adapted to permit the bolster to be introduced into the opening 2' and slidably engaged with the column guides 3. The bolster is retainedin its interlocked relation with the column guides by means of the top plate 7, fitted 1n and conforming to the configuration of the enlarged top portion of the opening 2 and provided at its outer face with a marginal flange 8, extending along the top and around the ends of the bolster confiningplate vand fitted in a corresponding recess 9 of the side frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, whereby the-bolster confining plate .is arranged in-.flush relation with the side frame, The bolster confining plate is also provided with spaced transverse ribs 10, fitting in transverse grooves 11 in the top wall of the opening 2 and. projecting from the inner face of the side frame and provided with registering perforations 12 for the reception of a key 13, or other suitable fastening device, wherev by'th'e bolster confining plate is detachably locked in the enlarged top portion of the opening 2. By this construction, the bolster is securely confined in its interlocked relation with the side frames of the truck.
The bolster is supported b v coiled springs 14, which may be of any preferred construction. The springs 14, which are preferably arranged in pairs, are seated .upon the end of a spring plank 15, provided with upwardly extending longitudinal side flangesv 16 and seated upon an adjustable bottom plate 17. The -bottom plate, which is adapted to be adjusted by screws 18, is provided at its ends with recesses 19, receiving the guide columns 3, whereby the bottom plate is slidably interlocked with the same. The screws 18, which are mounted in threaded openings 20 in the bottom wall or sill 21 of the opening 2, have reduced upper portions 22, which extend into registering openings 23 and 24 of the spring plank and the adjustable plate. The screws present supporting shoulders' 25 to the ad:
other suitable lool, whereby the scri-ws nur. be adjusted, should Il become nwessary to raise the .sprlngs and the bolster lo maintain This adjustment will obviate the inconwnience of interposng a board between the bolster and the springs, which has heretofore been necessarjv to raise the bolster and the car coupling to the proper height.
The side frames are provided at their ends with upper and lower horizontal arms 27 and QS to receive standard journal boxes 29, which are secured in place by bolts 30. ller plates 3l of either wood ormetal being preferably interposed between the lower arms 28 and the journal boxes 29. The filler plates are adapted to be removed so as to afford suthcient space between the arms to permit the journal boxes to be readily removed and replaced. The bolts 30 pierce the filler plates and retain the same in place.
The side frames are provided at their inner faces with hollow integral studs 32, located at opposite sides of. the opening 2 at the top thereof and forming seats for pins from which the vertical beams are :suspended.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:-
