Be'it known that-I, EUGENE CARPENTER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing in .Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Refrigerated Counters, of

which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings front and rear walls, the top of the counter,

however, being exposed so that goods displayed can be removed, the counter having at the front a show caseportion of glass, and at the rear a shelf for the convenience of the salesman in filling out sales-slips, &c.

The invention relates to the general construction of the counter, and also to the specific construction and arrangement of the bracket-s which hold the refrigerating coils and the brackets which hold the glass front and top which constitute the show case portion.

The brackets which support the refrigerating coils are also arranged to constitute the support for the rear slielf, the said rear shelf extending along the top of the ve ical wall at the back of the counter, while the refrigerating coils extend along within said rear wall and below the rear shelf, the rear thus forming a chamber open at the top so wall and shelf, and the show case portion which consists of a front wall'and shelf,

that the goods on the counter are accessible,

the inclosure, however, being sufiicient to keep the air therein thoroughly chilled for the preservation of the goods displayed, The front or show case portion not only contributes in forming the chamber, but also Y, prevents customers from handling the goods which are nevertheless exposed for inspection.

The 'counter A, which may be of an suit-- =,able construction or design, is provi ed, in accordance with the present invention, with a vertical rear wall A which constitutes the 7 support for the brackets a which are adapted to be secured to said rear wall, as by screws a; The said brackets, which are shown as provided with screw holes for the screws (1 have curved, projecting members a as many in number as there are refrigerating pipes 12, the shape of "said projections being such as to form pockets for the support of the pipes. The brackets are also provided with flat, horizontal project-ions a at the top, which constitute a support for the shelf 0, which is of sufficient width to afford a convenient support for the salesslips and the like, and also a cover or closure projecting over the refrigerating pipes to assist in creating a circulation, and causing the air near the top of the counter to remain thoroughly chilled. These same brackets can be utilized as the su port for a drip pan (Z which is herein-shown as formed of sheet metal having a curved channel portion at the bottom and a vertical portion d adapted to lie against the front of the rear wall A and to be clamped thereon and held in position by the screws (2 which hold the brackets a.

In order to confine the stratum of chilled air over thesurface of the counter, and at the same time to prevent customers from handling the goods, without interfering with the proper display thereof, the front of the counter is provided with a vertical wall of glass e, preferably higher than the rear wall A there being also a horizontal covering or inclosing portion f which is also of glass, and projects to the rear as far as is practicable without'interfering with the accessibility to the display portion of the counter. These glass walls are shown as supported by -..means of brackets 9 having vertical and horizontal members 9 and g, the former being provided with a base plate 9 adapted to be secured to the surface of the counter as by screws 9.

In order to dispense, so far as possible, with fastening devices for the plates of glass which form the walls, and at the same time to cover the adjacent edges of the glass plates, and for the purpose of utilizing brackets as small as possible, I provide the horizontal member 9 of the bracket with the channels g at opposite sides, into which channels the top plates f may be slid endwise. That portion of the bracket g which extends across the top of the counter is thus smooth, and unbroken, as indicated at 9', Fig. -1, and has a neat finish which can easily be kept clean and polished, thus addmember g the front face of which is flat,-

the forward project-ion being indicated at Figs. 1 and 2, and extending far enough to cover and project slightly beyond the front edge of the top glass plate f. The

This clamping plate It is held in position by' means of screws [L which extend, between .the adjacent plates 6, into the screw holes g in the face of the vertical member 9 By this construction, the glass plates can all be removed by merely taking off the clamping members h, and the top of the show case partis smooth and unbroken and free froml fastening devices or other projecting portions around which dirt can collect.

In order to exclude, so'far as possible, the warm air outside of the refrigerated space, the more open joints are packed with a yielding substance, such as strips of felt. 1. A refrigerating counter provided at the rear with a vertical wall; brackets adapted to be supported upon the front of said vertical wall, said brackets having proof a refrigerating coil; and a drip pan extending along below said pipes and held in position by said brackets, substantiallyas described.
