HOLDER FOR FISHING-TACKLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WVILLIAM M. REELY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Missoula, in the county of Missoula and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Fishing-Tackle, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to improvements in holders for fish-hooks, flies and other tackle used by anglers, and has for its object primarily to provide an improved holder of this character which is adapted to be conveniently worn within an ordinary hat and which is provided with devices for supporting or securing the hooks or flies and their snells in such manner as to avoid damage thereof, and to prevent tangling of the same with one another or with the lines which the holder is also adapted to carry,

'the construction of the holder being such that it can be manufactured readily and at relatively small cost.

To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements, and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.

In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 represents a cross-section of a hat showing the manner of placing the holder therein; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the holder shown in collapsed or compact form.

Similar parts are designated by the same reference characters in the several views.

In the accompanying drawing, I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein the holder comprises a relatively rigid frame 1 and a pair of pivotal or adjustable supporting or attaching members 2 and 3. Owing to economy in cost and lightness in weight, I'prefer to construct the parts just mentioned of wire of suitable size and strength, such a construction being shown in the drawing wherein the frame 1 is of generally rectangular form and is composed of a single length of wire having its ends joined at 4, the two sides of the frame being substantially parallel while the ends 5 and 6 are offset downwardly below the plane of the body of the frame, the

ends 5 and 6 being connected to the sides of the frame by the vertical arms 7 and 8.

In the present embodiment of the invention, the holder is adapted to be applied and worn within an ordinary hat. F or this purpose, the attaching members 2 and 3 are pivotally connected to the respective ends 5 and 6 of the frame, the lower ends of the members 2 and 3" being preferably curved as at 9 and 10 to conform substantially to the curvature of the average hat. The arms of the members 2 and 3 may be pivotally connected to the respective ends 5 and 6 of the frame by the coils 1,1 and 12 which are formed on the ends of these members, such coils having a sufficient frictional engagement with the ends 5 and 6 of the frame to retain the members 2 and 3 in extended or collapsed positions, but permitting the members to be readily adjusted when desired. The holder is adapted to be inserted in the crown of an ordinary hat as shown in Fig. 2, the upper frame 1 occupying a position above the head of the wearer while the lower ends of the members 2 and 3 are placed between the wall of the hat and the usual inner band, the band of the hat serving to hold the members 2 and 3 in extended position. If desired, however, the holder may be conveniently carried in the pocket or may be contained in a small package, as the members 2 and 3 can be adjusted into collapsed relation to the frame or body of the holder as shown in Fig. 3.

The hooks or flies, snells and other tackle are supported by or secured to the frame 1 which is provided with suitable devices to receive and secure them. Preferably, a hook-engaging member is arranged longitudinally of one side of the frame 1 and a Snell-securing member extends longitudinally of the opposite side of the frame whereby the hooks may be properly supported and the snells will be stretched so that they may be kept in proper condition, especially when wet. The hook-engaging member preferably consists of a wire 13 the two ends of which are suitably secured to the vertical portions 7 and 8 of the frame 1 while the intermediate portion of the wire 13 is formed with a suitable number of longitudinally spaced eyes or loops 14, the axes of which are transverse to the length of the frame 1, these eyes or loops being adapted to receive the hooks as shown, while the spaces between the eyes may receive the bends of a relatively long snell. The snellsecuring member which is arranged at the opposite side of the frame 1 is preferably composed of a closely coiled helical spring 15 the ends of which are suitably secured to the ends of the frame. The inherent tendency of the spring is to close its coils. In order, however, to attach a snell to the spring, it is only necessary to press the snell between two adjacent coils or convolutions, the latter being thereby separated, although exerting a,compression upon the snell sufficient to frictionally retain it in stretched condition. The lines may be wound about the vertical end portions 7, 7 and 8, 8 of the frame, and as the hooks, snells and lines will be supported or secured. in their respective positions, there will be no possibility of tangling.

I claim as my invention l. A holder for fishing tackle comprising a frame having a pair of parallel transverse members at its ends, a pair of supports pivoted to swing on said members as axes whereby such supports may occupy positions either in angular or collapsed relations to said frame, and hook and snell-holding devices attached at their ends to the opposite ends of the frame and arranged in parallelism at the opposite longitudinal sides thereof.

2. A holder for fishing tackle comprising a frame formed of wire having parallel side members and transverse end members, a pair of supports pivoted to swing on said end members as axes whereby such supports may occupy positions in collapsed or angular relations to the frame, and hook and snell-engaging devices arranged adjacent to and in parallelism with the longitudinal side memers of the frame.

A holder for fishing tackle comprising a wire frame having parallel longitudinal side members the ends of which are offset and parallel transverse members connecting such offset ends, loop-shaped supports pivoted on said transverse members and capable of swinging about the same as axes whereby such supports may occupy positions in angular or collapsed relations to the frame, and hook and snell-engaging members connected at their opposite ends to the respective oiset portions of the frame and arranged adj acent to and in parallelism with the respective side members of the frame.

4. A holder for fishing tackle comprising a support, a wire convoluted at intervals in its length to form hook-engaging eyes therein, and a snell-engaging member spaced laterally thereof.

5. A holder of the character described comprising a support, a wire extending longitudinally thereof and having convolutions arranged at intervals in its length to form hook-engaging eyes therein, the axes of said eyes being transverse to the length of said wire, and a snell-engaging member spaced laterally of said hook-engaging wire.

6. A holder of the character described comprising a frame having downwardly offset ends, loop-shaped attaching members pivotally connected to the opposite ends of the frame and both adapted to occupy positions in extended or collapsed relations thereto, and hook and snell-securing members arranged in parallelism atopposite sides of the frame and in a plane between the offset ends and the body of said frame and attached at their ends to the opposite ends of the frame.
