' The purpose in view in devising the present invention has been to provide a simple fan attachment of the type designed to be applied to fly-wheels of sewing machines for fanning the operator of the machine as he works.
The attachment constituting the invention is not only simple but is constructed peculiarly and of such a number of pieces that it may be very cheaply manufactured and placed on the market at a nominal cost.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the head of a sewing machine showing the invention applied to .the fiy-wheel; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the ring and fan blades alone; Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the rim of the fly-wheel showing more clearly the means for securing, the attachment thereon; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the adjusting and clamping washer; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view looking toward the rim of the flywheel, showing more clearly the means of connecting the split ends of the ring.
Specifically describing the preferred form of the invention, as will be noted from the drawings, the fan attachment comprises a ring or annular plate 1, curved or concavoconvex in cross section and provided at intervals in its periphery with radial extensions which are bent at an angle to the plane of the body 1 to provide the blades 2. p The curved cross section of the annular body 1 is provided in order that the same may fit snugly against the side of the rim of the fiy-wheel 2 of the sewing machine and conform with the shape of the latter, such invention preventing likelihood of rattling or vibration of the part 1 on the wheel 2 when the former is securely fastened in place. The fly-wheels of different types of sewing machines are of slightly different diameters and in order to admit of application of the attachment above described to fly-wheels of different sizes, it is contemplated that the annular ring or body 1 be of split formation, the split ends 1 being adapted to be adjusted relative to one another, in order that the body may be held in expanded or contracted positions whereby to fit a fiy-wheel of any ordinary size.
In order to secure the body 1 to the wheel 2 hooks 3 are provided, each of said hooks being formed with a threaded shank 4: adapted to receive thereon a clamping nut 5 between which and the body 1 is a washer 6. One of the hooks 3 has its shank 4 passing through an opening 7 in the annular body 1 of the attachment while the other hook has it shank adapted to pass between the split ends 1 of the member 1. One of the washers, designated 6, is toothed in its inner surface, as shown at 6", and the teeth thereof are adapted to engage with teeth 8 formed by crimping the split ends 1 of the annular body 1.
It will be apparent by reference to Fig. 5, that when the hook which passes through the washer 6 is arranged in engagement with the fly-wheel and the nut 5 screwed on said hook so as to screw the member 1 in place, the washer 6 will clamp against the member 1 and the teeth 6 will interlock with the teeth 8 so as to securely hold the annular body 1 in place on the wheel and lock the same in expanded or contracted condition according to the size of the flywheel against which the fan attachment is fitted.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In combination with a fly-wheel, a fan attachment'therefor consisting of a split rim of curved form in cross section so as to conform with and fit against a side of the rim of the wheel, said rim being provided with fan blades at its periphery and with an opening opposite the split end portions, a hook having its shank passing through said opening, a nut screwed upon said shank and coacting with the ring to secure the latter in place, the split ends of the ring being toothed, a locking and clamping washer having a toothed surface adapted to engage the toothed portions of the split ends of the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature rings, a second hook engaged with the rim in presence of two witnesses. of the wheel and having its shank passed be tween the split ends, and a nut screwed upon I CHARLES ROBERT the shank and engaging the washer to hold Witnesses:
