Description

M. MEIROWSKY.
ELECTRIC CONDENSER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 3, 1909.

W H M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX METBOWSKY, OF COLOGNE-EHRENFELD, GERMANY.
ELECTRIC CONDENSER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it-knownthat I, Max MEIROWSKY, a citizen of the German Empire, and resident of Cologne- Ehrenfeld, Germany, have invented certaininew and useful Improvements in Electric (Condensers, of which the following is 'a specification.
The present lnvention relates to electric condensers and the method for making the same, and has for itspurpose to provide a condenser having the highest efliciency with the maximum compactness in structure; and which does not; require a protecting casing.
The further purpose is in making the condenser of such design that the same may be manufactured by a. single process and at comparatively little cost.
The article 0}? the invention isd shown in ers ctive in t e accom an i rawin L p R fzrring'to the figuri a in fu r ther deta il a desi ates a strip of substantially hard and thicfi which is coated with shellac, resin, or 0t er insulating substance. The sheet I is rolled into cylindrical form, in a manner hereinafter explained and interposed between the layers of the roll are separate sheets of tinfoil 6. The-alternate layers of tin-foil and paper thus constructed possess the firmness of wood or soft metal and need not therefore be ineased. Constructin the condenser in tubular form has the furt er advanta e that it is kept cool at all times, the centra opening affording a natural air passage-way.
, n manufacturing the article the strip of paper a is saturated with shellac, or resin, and then rolled upon a spindle. As the sheet is being thus woundsheets of tin-foil b are interposed between the layers thereof at reg ular intervals. The capacity of the condenser may be here determined b the number of tin-foil sheets interpose and the space intervals between. the sheets i. e., by p acing the sheets, during the winding, in
close or distant succession. As the sheets a and b are being wound izpon the spindle, the former sheet is subjecte to the action of a heated mandrel which cooperates with the s indle as a pressing roller: The heating of e sheet a removes all dampness, and causes Specification of Letteis Patent.

the coating. of shellac or resin to become semi-fluid. This latter condition effects to bring the several layers and the interposed sheets into an intimate and fixed relationship, and gives to'the completed article such compactness andjfirmness'fiis to not require an inclosing casing.. The simultaneous wind.- ing and pressingfof the paper sheet, under the conditions aforesaid, exerts such aneffeet on the di-electric inductive capacity of the paper thatg-the same is several times as reat as that of;. -raw aper. A
at I claim a'sf; my invention and desire to secure by States letters Patent 1s:-
1. The process "of manufacturing an electric condenser consisting in saturatmg a film of fibrous material with resinous substance, rolling the film upon a spindlewhile heating said film, and interposin sheets of tin foil between the layers of t e roll during said winding.
,2. The process of manufacturing an electric condenser consistin in first saturating a sheet of paper with s ellac; second, rolling said sheet upon a s indle while in contact with a heated man rel; third, interposing sheets of tin foil between the layers of the roll during the winding thereof.
3. The process of producing an electric" condenser consisting inuniting by-iwinding, fibrous material saturated with resinous sub stance, and interposed sheets of tin foil, and in simultaneously compressing and heating said elements when umti them.
4 The process of manu acturi an electric condenser consisting in saturating a film of fabric with a resinous solution, rolling said film upon a spindle while incontaet with a heated mandrel, and interposing strips of the foil located in relative cs1- tions corresponding to the tension an capacity to be developed in "the condenser.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAX'MEIROWSKY.
