Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Doc. 5, 1911.
Application filed March 9, 1911. Serial No. 613,275.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM C. MARTI- NIL-in, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, Albany county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Seals, of which the following is a specification.
' 1 Fly invention relates to seals forthe doors of cars, store houses orthe like. Its object is to produce adevice which shall be simple, efficient, economical in construction, easily sealed, and one which the shackle portion is non-replaceable after unsealing.
-Further objects of the invention will appear in this specification and be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figures 1 and2 are front elevations of the body or tag port-ion of the 'seal in successive stages of construction;
Figs. 8 and at are side elevations of the body and shackle portions respectively; Fig. 5
is a top plan view of the bodyas shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is an elevation, partly broken away, of the complete device inoperative position; Fig. 7 is a view similar to that of Fig. 2, and Fig. 8 a view similar to that of Fig. 6, showing a modified form of construction. Q
Referring to the hrst siz; figures, 11 designates a blank of sheet metal. from which the body portion of my deviceis made. It'comprises a tag portion 12, a head 13, and a series of teeth 14, shown as three in nuInber, integral with and projecting laterally from the head 13. In Fig. 2 the teeth 14 are shown as bent inward upon the head 13, but projecting upwardly therefrom, see Fig. 5. The head'13 is then rolled to form a cylinder, see Fig. 3, with the teeth 14 projecting inwardly at each end thereof. Designating characters, shown in Fig. 6, may then be stamped on the tag portion 12, when the body 11 is hardened and drawn to an ap 'iroximately spring temper.
The shackle of my device consists essentially of a piece of wire having" an enlarged head at each end adapted to be introduced into the head 13 of the body, the teeth 14 spreading resiliently while the enlarged end of the wire is forced therebetween and re' turning to their normal position to prevent its withdrawal. It is also important to pro-- and 6 I have shown a preferred form of shackle which accoi nplishes both these results. 2i designates this shackle, which in use is bent into the curved form shown in Fig. (3. At each end it is rolled into a close spiral coil '22 of a dia meter permitting it to be forced between the teeth 14 and to be retained thereby within the head 13. At a distance therefrom approximately equal to the length of the teeth 1-4: is a second coil 23 separated from the end coil 22 by a straight portion 24, the coil 23 being preferably slightly larger in diameter than the coil 22, and so as to close the open end of the head 18 and prevent the introduction of any instrument therein.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from an inspection of the drawings. The shackle 21 is firstpassed through two staples, one on the'car door and the other on the jainb; or through the staple on.
to theirnormal position as soon as the,
" already explained, the parts 23 serve to prevent the introduction of any means for tam pering with the spring teeth.
In the modified form of the device shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the body portion 31 consists asbcfore of a tag portion 32 and a head portion 33, having teeth 3 f projecting laterally from one only of its sides. Adjacent the other side of the head 32 is stamped a depression 35, which, when the head is rolled to form a cylinder, as shown in Fig. 8, forms an internal bead. Before the rolling operation, one end of a shackle 41 formed with a head 42. is placed in position to be rolled.
within the head, see Fig. 8, whereby the body and the shackle are permanently secured together. In operation, the free end of the shackle, after being passed through the sta ple'or staples, is forced into the other end of the head33 and there held by the teeth 34, as before described, the free end of the shackle being, of course, provided with a head of any suitable form to prevent its disengagement.
It will be understood that certain me chanicirl changes may be made in my device, other than those shown, Without departing from my invention. I do not, therefore,
, end means for engaging desire to be limited in respect thereto except as set forth in the sub oined claims; it being understood that the word means in the phrase at its other end means for engaging one end of said shackle, in certain of the claims, includes the means shown at the right of both Figs. 6 and 8, as well as any other suitable and desired means to this end.
What I claim is:
1. car seal comprising a body and a shackle; said body consisting of a tag portion and a cylindric head having at one of its ends a plurality of integral, inwardly projecting, spring teeth forming an opening contracted at its inner end, and at its other end means for engaging one end of said shackle; said shackle being provided at its other end with an enlarged head adapted to be forced into the opening at the end of said body head and to be retained therein by the resilient return of said teeth to their normal position, substantially for the purposes set forth.
2. A car seal comprising a body and a shackle; said body consisting of a tag portion and a cylindric head having at one of its ends a plurality of integral, inwardly projecting, spring teeth formin an opening contracted at its inner end, an at its other one end of said shackle; said shackle being provided at its other end with an enlarged head adapted to be forced into the opening at the end of said body head and to be retained therein by the resilient return of said teeth to their normal position, said shackle being also provided with a second enlarged portion separated from said head and adapted to sub-- stantially close the free end of said opening when said shackle head is engaged by said teeth, substantially for the purposes set forth. a
3. A car seal comprising a body and a shackle; said body consisting of a tag portion and a cylindrichead having at each of its ends a plurality of integral, inwardly projecting, spring teeth formin an opening contracted at itsinner end; sai shackle be ing provided at each of itsends with an enlarged head adapted to be forced into one of said openings and tobe retained therein by the resilient return of said teeth to their normal position, substantially for the purposes set forth.
