LOCKING A111) OPENING DEVICE FOR nxrnusroiv rmatns To all whom it mag/concerns Be it known that I, IIENRY, M. ltLussom new and useful Improvements in Locking and Opening Devices for Extension-Tables;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper'tains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in tables and more particularly to locking means for the members of an extension table,-the object of the invention being to provide simple devices whereby the two members of an extension table can be drawn closely together and locked and to so construct the de ices that, when operated to release the table members, they will also cause the forcible separation of one member from the other, thus obviating the inconvenience heretofore encountered with the sticking of dowel pins projecting from one table member and entering sockets in the other.
'With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as herein after set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view-of a portion of a table top showing the application of my improvements with the two members of the table top locked together, and Fig. 2 is-a similar view showing the posit-ions of the parts after the table top members have been unlocked and sepa rated. I
1, 2, represent the two members of the top of an extension table, the member 1 being provided at its ends with dowel pins 3 to enter suitable sockets inthe adjacent end of the member 2.
A bracket 4 is-secured to and depends from the member 1 some distance removed from the inner end thereof and to this bracket, a lever 5 ispivotally attached and formed at its free end into a. handle 6. An-
other bracket 7 is secured to the member 1 of-the table top at a point between the bracket 4 and the inner edge of said member 1, preferably a short distance from said inner edge. A locking bar 8 is pivotally attached at one end to the lever 5 and. is of sufiicient length to project beyond the inner Specification ofLetters-Patent. The keeper 11 above referred to is provided at its end opposite the lip 10 with a depending arm or member 14 to beengaged by the free end of the locking bar 8 as presently explained.
When the table members I2 are separated and the lodging devices are in the positions shown in Fig. 2, the operation of the lever 5 to the left will cause the lockingbar to move upwardly (by. reason of the slot 12 and pin 13) until its hook 9 shall aline with the lip 10 ofthe keeper and the further movement, of said lever 5 in the same direction will cause the two table top members to be drawn together. The pivotal connection of the lever 5 with the bracket 4 and the pivotal connection of the bar 8 with the lever 5 will now be in valinement as shown in Fig. 1 and the table top members will be securely locked together. Should it now be desired to unlock and separate the table top members 1 2, the operator will move the 35 free end of the lever 5 downwardly. During the first portionlof this movement the bar 8 will be moved longitudinally so as to engage the depending member 14 on thetable top member 2 andforcibly separate the latter from the table top member 1. -As the bar 8 continues to move forwardly by the depression of the lever 5, said bar 8 will be caused to move downwardly (by reason of the slot'12 and pin 13) and the hoop ,9 of said bar to move away from the lip 10' of the keeper and thus the two table top members will be unlocked and separated as shown attached to the first mentioned member and to said bar, means cooperating with said 1 bar to move it toward or away from the table top members when it is moved longi-' 9' tudinallyfanda device on one of said table top members in position'to be engaged by said locking barlfw'vhen thelatter 1s moved longitudinallyfrom locked position to forcibly separate said'table top members 2. The combination with two relatively movable tabletop" members, of two brackets depending from one of said members, a lever pivoted to'one' of said brackets, a locking ar pivoted tosaid lever and extending past the T other bracket and having a dial onal slot, a pin supported by the last mentloned bracket and. passing throughthe diagonal slot of the locking bar, a keeper secured to the other table top member tocooperate with latter lsmoved to unlock the table top members, for forcibly separating one table top member from the other. r
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
