Be it known that T, SAMUEL E. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jacinto, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scraping and Grading Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved scraping and grading machine and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawingsl igure 1 is a plan of a scraper and grader con structed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4: is a detail horizontal sectional. view of the same on the plane indicated by the line aa of Fig. 2.
The back 1 of the scraper is inclined and is provided on its front side at its ends with vertically disposed wings '2, which project forwardly therefrom. The scraper blade 3 is secured on the front side of the back at the lower portion thereof, and projects downwardly and forwardly therefrom. On the rear side of the back near its lower edge, and at the ends and center thereof, are rearwardly projecting brackets 1, having hearings in which is mounted a rock shaft 5. Two pairs of rearwardly extending rock arms 6 are secured to the said rock shaft and are provided at their rear ends with bearings 7 in which are mounted the spindles of the axles 8 of a pair of rollers 9. The said rollers are mounted near the ends of the scraper or carrier and the said rock shaft is provided with a lever 10 whereby it may be partly turned.
A frame 11 extends rearwardly from the central portion of the inclined back 1. This frame comprises a pair of longitudinally disposed bars 12 which have their front ends secured to the back at points a short distance from opposite sides of the center thereof and a transverse bar 13 which is secured on the rear portions of said bars 12. A seat 14 for the driver is mounted on the frame 11 by standards or supports 15, and the cross bar 13 of the frame 11 is provided near its ends with a pair of rearwardly extending arms 16, which are provided at their rear ends with bearings 17 for the spindles 18 of the axle of a roller 19.

A series of arms 20 are attached to the lower portion of the back at the front side thereof, project forwardly therefrom, and have (.lownwardly and forwardly inclined front ends 21 on which is secured a front scraper blade 22. The said scraper blade is provided at suitable points with irons 23 which have eyes 24: affording means for the attachmentof the cross bar of a draft pole, or a drag chain to the said irons, and hence to the grading and so 'aping machine; The rear portion of the front scraper blade 22 extends upwardly and rearwardly from the front portions of the arms 20.
A bottom and dump board 25 lies on the arms 20 with its front beveled edge 26 on gaged behind the flange formed by the upper portion of the scraper blade 22, and its rear side bearing against the front sides of the lower downwardly tapering portions of the wings 2. Operating ropes or chains 27 are attached to the rear portion of the said bottom and dump board near the center thereof, and operate in guides 28 with which the back 1 is provided on its front side, and at its upper edge. The rear ends of these operating ropes are attached to a lever plate 29 which is pivotally mounted on the rear side of the back near its upper edge as at 30.
A push bar 81 has its lower end pivotally connected as at 32 to the bottom and dump board 25 at a point near the center of the latter, the upper portion of the said push bar bearing on the upper side of the back and operating in a guide 33. 3y turning the lever plate 29 downwardly the bottom and dump board can be d awn rearwardly and upwardly on the front side of the back 1, so as to uncover the spaces between the scraper blade 3, the front scraper blade 21, and the arms 20, and dump such earth or other material as may be on said bottom or dump board, through the said openings, or spaces, or cause material which passes over the front scraper blade as the machine advances to fall rearwardly from the same through the said spaces and be acted upon immediately thereafter, by the main scraper blade 3. The push bar 31 enables the bottom or dump board to be disposed in the position hereinbefore described, on the arms 20, and between the scraper blades 21 and 3.
It will be observed upon reference to Fig. 2, of the drawings, that the weight of the machine is carried by the rollers 9, and

The lever 10 enables the arms 6, which carry the rollers 9 to be turned angularly in vertical planes, so as to cause the said rollers to raise or lower the front portion of the machine as may be desired. When the machine is lowered to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, the scraper blades will engage the surface upon which the machine travels and will scrape and grade the same. Vvhen the lever 10 is turned rearwardly, the front end of the machine will be raised as will be understood. To support the ma chine when thus raised, T have provided a longitudinally movable locking block 35 which is mounted and travels on a guide 36 which is secured on the bars 12 of the frame 11. The front end of this locking block is inclined as at 37 where it engages the lever 10 when the latter is in normal position with the front end of the machine lowered. A spring 38 is provided to move the block in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4 when the lever 10 is moved rearwardly to raise the front end of the machine, the spring thus serving to interpose the block between the lever and the rear side of the back 1, and hence coact with the lever to support and maintain the machine in such elevated position. The spring 38 is here shown as operating in a slot 39 with which the block 35 is provided, the spring being also shown as mounted on an arm 40, attached to the back. Crusher plates 41 are disposed in advance of the rollers 9, attached to the rock shaft 5, the said crusher plates inclining downwardly and rearwardly.
In addition to use as a grader and scraper, the machine is highly eflicient for breaking up clods and pulverizing, smoothing and rolling the soil in fields for cultivation.
I claim l. The herein described grading machine comprising an inclined back having a scraping blade at its lower edge, arms extending forwardly from the lower portion of the back, a front scraping blade attached to the front ends of the said arms, a frame extending rearwardly from the back, a rock shaft mounted on the back, a lever to turn said rock shaft, and supporting elements for the machine, and carried by the said rearwardly extending frame, and by arms attached to the said rock shaft respectively.
2. A machine of the class described comprising an inclined back having a scraper blade at its lower edge, arms extending forwardly from the back, and provided at their front ends with a front scraper blade, supporting means for the back, a dump and bottom board on the said forwardly extending arms, between the rear portion of the front scraper blade, and the upper portion of the main scraper blade and means to operate the said dump and bottom board.
3. In a machine of the class described, a frame having a rearwardly extending portion provided with a supporting roller, a scraper carried by the frame, a rock shaft mounted in rear of said scraper blade, and provided with rock arms, rollers' having their bearings in the said rock arms, and a hand lever attached to the said rock shaft to turn the same and cause the last mentioned rollers to raise and lower that por tion of the frame provided with the scraper.
4. In a machine of the class described, a frame having a rearwardly extending portion provided with a supporting roller, a scraper carried by the frame, a rock shaft mounted in rear of said scraper blade, and provided with rock arms, rollers having their bearings in the said rock arms, and a hand lever attached to the said rock shaft to turn the same and cause the last mentioned rollers to raise and lower that portion of the frame provided with the scraper, and means to lock the said lever in place when the machine is raised.
