To alt LC/LOHL- it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES A. Boss, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVall-Papers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to papers such as may be used for producing ornamental effects, such, for example, as wall. papers.

The object of the invention is to provide a paper which shall have somewhat the same appearance as a roughly plastered surface, or in which the surface of the paper appears rough or pebbly.

The invention consists of a paper having incorporated therein, in addition to the paper stock, a granular material, the granules being covered by a thin layer of the paper stock so that the surface of the paper presents a roughened or pebbled surface, while at the same time the cohesiveness of the sheet is insured by the thin outer layer of the paper stock. It will be understood that various methods may be followed for the production of such paper and that various granular substances may be utilized in its production.

On the accompanying drawing, I have illustrated conventionally, in Figure 1, an apparatus which maybe utilized for producing the invention. Fig. 2 represents an exaggerated section through a sheet of paper.

The same reference characters indicate the same parts wherever they occur.

On the drawing, a, Z) and 0 represent vats or receptacles, each containing an applying roll partially immersed in the contents of the vat, said rolls being indicated at a, 5 and 0 respectively.

(Z indicates the usual felt carrier which is supported by driving and supporting rolls 7) 7) and which. makes contact with the three rolls successively so as to have applied thereon the material contained in the vats, the application of the material in some cases being assisted by suction which is created in any suitable manner on the face of the applying roll. In vat a is placed paper stock of any suitable kind or quality such as is ordinarily used in the manufacture of wall papers, for instance. In the vat b is placed a mixture of liquid paper stock andasuitable granular material such, for instance, as sawdust which I find to be excellently adapted for the purpose, the paper stock and the sawdust being thoroughly intermingled. In some cases the sawdust may be applied from the vat Z) without being mixed with the paper stock. As the carrier travels in the direction of the arrow, a thin layer of paper stock from the vat a is deposited thereon, and while the stock is yet plastic, a layer of the sawdust (in this case a mixture of sawdust and paper stock) is applied thereto so as to adhere to the first layer. Then there is applied upon the surface of the second layer a third layer of paper stock from the vat 0. The three adhering layers are stripped from the belt by any suitable means and carried through pressure rollers indicated at e e, and the sheet, thus consisting of the three layers, is dried in any suitable manner or by any suitable apparatus.

I do not regard it as essential that a sheet of paper should consist necessarily of three layers, as the first layer may be omitted without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, provided the sawdust is mixed with the paper stock in forming the first layer; nor do I regard it as necessary that the paper should be prepared with the apparatus which I have described, as it may be manufactured with a Fourdrinier machine with equal facility.

By thus forming the paper of a layer containing the granular material and a superimposed relatlvely thin layer of paper stock, the resultant sheet presents a rough or pebbled appearance and possesses the desired cohesiveness to render it thoroughly practicable for wall papers or hangings and for such ornamentation as may be desired.

lVhat I claim is:

1. A wall paper formed of paper stock and having granules incorporated therein and covered thereby so that the surface of the paper presents an irregular, rough or pebbly surface.
