,UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID FRIEDLANDER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HIDE-WOR-KING MACHINE.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, DAVID FRIEDLANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Hide-lorking Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to a machine for hide working for the removal of flesh or oifal from one side of a hide or skin and for smoothing ont and stretching the other side thereof; and in such connection it relates to the constructive arrangement of such a machine for the dened uses of the same.
The nature and scope of my present invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings formn ing part hereof, in which Figure l, is a central sectional view through a machine embodying main features of my invention; and Fig. 2, is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 0a, w, of Fig. l, showing in elevation the V-shaped blade wheel of the machine.
Referring to the drawings a is a skeleton framing supporting a casing b, housing working members of the machine. This framing consists of standards al, to which cross-frames a2, are bolted. The casing ZJ, is provided with a discharge throat 1, extending into a receptacle b2, supported from a bracket b3, which is secured to one of the standards al, as clearly shown in Fig. l. A cross-shaft c, is journaled in the hub c1, of the casing b, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. This shaft extends into the cross-frames of the standards al, and one end is intended to project beyond the cross-frame a2, and is suitably connected with power operating means, not shown for revolving the 'said shaft. A blade-wheel d, is keyed to the said shaft c, within the casing o, in a manner aS fully shown in Fig. 2. This blade-wheel cl, preferably consists of a series of separated V-shaped blades arranged around the periphery of said wheel and rigidly secured thereto, for the rotation of the same within the casing, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. l, under certain conditions to be presently fully explained to remove ott'al, fleshings or other rough or uneven matter from the hide so as to give a smooth or even surface throughout to the same for subsequent Specification of Letters Patent.

use and at the same time to smooth out and stretch the opposite or grain side of the hide.
The casing o, is cut away in one portion and to the wall of which is pivotally mount` ed a hide-supporting device bt, consisting of a metal plate b5, having the underside reinforced with a padded leather sheet t, which not only serves as a cover for the casing but also as a supporting device for a roughened surface hide while being fed in the path of the revolving blade wheel (Z. The said de* `vice bt, is recessed in the outer portion and `in which is mounted a block D7, ]ournaled to a forked rod o8, which latter is in pivotal connection with a foot treadle o, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The block ZJ?, is connected with a coiled tensioning spring '610, the opposite end of which is secured to a bracket o, extending upward from the casing b, in order to normally hold the feeding-device of, under a light pressure in contact with the revoluble blade-wheel ci, or entirely free of the same if in action, but no hide is being conveyed along over the blade wheel (l, to be affected by the same in the stretching and smoothing out of the grain side of the hide e, and while offal, fleshings or rough matter is being removed from the opposite side of the same and with the block 57, de pressed in the recessed portion of the supporting device b4, by the manual manipulation of the foot treadle b9, in a manner as will be clearly understood from Fig. l. The removed oftal or foreign mattei' from the hide by means of the blade-wheel d, is discharged from the casing Z9, through the throat 1, into the waste receptacle b2, after which the hide smoothed or stretched on the grain side and likewise freed of oftal or other rough matter on the flesh side is then withdrawn from the machine, preferably by hand through simply releasing the foot from the treadle t, to free the supporting device b4 from surface cont-act with the blade-wheel d, aided in that respect by the spring 610, as will be understood from Fig. l, of the drawings.
Having thus described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a machine of the character described, a casing having an opening wherein is arranged a hide supporting device forming a closure for the opening of said casing, a treadle-mechanism having a block mounted in one portion of said device, a spring connected at one end with said device and at the other end with a part of the machine, and a revoluble shaft having a blade-wheel connected and revolving with the same, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a machine of the character described, a casing having an opening wherein is arranged a hide-supporting device forming a closure for the opening of said casing, a treadle-mechanism having a block mounted in one portion of said device, a spring connected at one end with said block and at the other with a part of the machine and a revoluble shaft provided with a wheel having a series of V-shaped blades mounted in said casing and with which said device is brought in contact, substantially as and for` the purposes described.
3. In a machine of the character described, a casing having an opening wherein is arranged a hide-supporting device pivoted to said casing and formed with a recess and forming a closure for said casing, said device having an under padded surface, a spring controlled block in connection with a treadle-mechanism and operatively controlling said bloclr and spring and a bladewheel revoluble in said casing when said treadle-mechanism is actuated to feed a hide between said device and blade-wheel, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of the two subscribing Witnesses hereto.
DAVID FRIEDLANDER.
