In the machine shown in the drawings the lsten 1 forms art of a frame or stretcher which is ri id y attached to the standards 8 and 4. Fitted to oscillate on the shaft 8 are the ink roller arms 20 carrying the ink rollers 21 Fig. 1., and connected by a link 22 Fig. 8 to the standard 4 by which arran ement the arms 20 are actuated in the neon manner. The ink plate 23 Fi 1 is fitted to rotate in a bracket 24 whic is pivotally connected to the top of the tyB: bed or to a bracket carried b the type d legs 6, and the back end of t e bracket 24 is connected by a link so to an arm 26 which is carried by the tie bar between the ink roller arms 20. The pawl 27, for intermittently rotating the ink plate 28, is carried by a lever 2 which is pivoted on the-bracket 2s and is actuated as it comes into eontact with the cam surface 29 on the bracket 26. This,rack is pivotall connected at 41 to a slotted lever 42 w ieh is fulcrumed at 43 and is actuated by a crank pin 44 on a disk 45 which is fixed u on a shaft 46 and driven by a claw finger 4 on a gear wheel 48 which is loosely mounted on the shaft 46 and is driven from the wheel 13, throu h which arrangement the shaft 46 and t e cams upon it are also driven, while the use of a slotted link 42 for driving the rack 40 gives a quick return motion to the rack. At the end of each forward movement of the rack it is raised out of ear with its pinion and at the end of each ack stroke the rack is lowered into gear with its pinion by which arrangement an intermittent rotation is given to the grippers. To enable this to be effected the rpck is fitted to slide horizontally in a guide 49 which is slotted to slide vertically on a die 50 encircling the shaft 80 and is raised and lowcred from a cam 51 on the shaft 46 through a lever 52, rocking shaft 53 and lever 54. For locking the gripper rings in position after each movement and for making sure that the grippers have been moved to their printing an registering position the ripper ring 38 is provided with looking ugs :55 Figs. 1 and 2 and working to con'unction therewith there is a fork 56 carried )y a bar 56' which is titted to slide in brackets 57 011 the .-.tandards 3 and prevented from turning by arms 56, Figs. 1 and 13, which slide in contact with the face of the standard. The f0l'l '5ti is actuated from the cam 59 on the shaft- 46 through a lever 60 and a buffer s )ring 61 which is introduced to insure that t to fork 56 is positively raised to its locking position. The end of the lever 61- hos between a pair of collars 160, 161, the former of which is fast and the latter loose upon the bar 56; and the spring (it, wlueh surrounds the bar 56', bears at one and against the loose collar 161 and at its other and against a collar 156 fast upon thebar. The spring is strong enouigh to support the weight of the fork 56 an the rod 56', and is somewhat compressed when the fork is lifted to its locking position. This arran cment insures an accurate operation of tie locking fork even should the cam by which the movements are controlled become worn.
The frisket irons 62 for holding the s'lcet on the platen are adjustably attached to a bar 63 which is carried by levers 64 from a rocking shaft 65, and ti idly connected to one end of the bar 63 here is a lever 66, the face of which slides in a guide 67 whereby the position of the frisket irons 62 is controlled as they are moved to and from the platen. For actuating the shaft it is titted with a lever 68 which is coupled by a link 69 to a lever 70 which is actuated by the cam 71 on the shaft 46, see Figs. 2 and 4. The end 72 of the impression rod 19 slides upon a plate 73 which is pivoted on the standard 3, and normally this plate is so held b a wedge on the spring 71 that the end of tie rod 72 is directed over the impression stop 75, but when the impression is thrown otl' the wedge is withdrawn from under the plate 73 and the weight of the rod tips the late and the end of the rod strikes against t e sto 75 and the shaft 8 is thereby turned. en the impression is thrown off it is necessary that the motion of the grippers be arrested also, and this is done by raising the claw 47 out of the notch in the disk 45 whereby the shaft 46 is disconnected from the wheel 48 and the shaft is held at rest and always brought to rest in the same position by a lever 76 Fig. 9 which is pulled into a recess m a disk 77, fixed upon the shaft 46 by means of a spring 78.
For actuating the claw 47 the machine is titted with a bar 7. Fig. 4 which can slide in the standards and is prov ded with a truck 80 which is normally held in its inoperative position by a spring 81 and when so bold acts upon the spring 74 to hold its wedge under the plate 73. Pivoted on the outside face of the standard 4 there is a lever 82 which is provided with a recessed end 84 and is actuated by a cam on a wheel 83 which is driven from the wheel 14. Pivotcd on the bar 79 there is a lever 85 carrying a V-ended strip 86 which is designed to be acted upon by the end 84 of the lever 82 but normally is held clear of the end 84 by suitably urrauged springs. Above the end of the lever 85 there is a lever 87 wlleh is connected by a spring to the band im )ression throw oll' lever 88 to allow of the ever 88 being operated atauy time. and when the end 8-1 is clear of the piece 86 the connecting s )ring forces the piece 36 into the path of the end 81 and the rod 79 is moved cudwise at tl'c next inward motion of the lever 92. 'lhis brings the truckt-lo into the path of a lever Ht carried by the. same axle as the claw 47 and the claw is then raised out of the. notch in the disk 45. The s )ring 74 is also liberated and draws its wet gc from under the plate 73 and the impression rod strikes the stop 75 so that whenever the handle 88 is operated the impression is thrown oil and the grippers brought to rest at the same no I time. At the lower end of the table there is a set of fixed stop pins 128 and ulso a set of liioi'ablc stop pins 12!) which are fixed to a rod 130. iiiid'are normally held in their highest position b a spring. The pins 129 are also connectc by a wire I32 to some lixcd part of the machine so that as the table rises to its highest position the motion of the pins 129 is arrested. The side lay 127 is ad ustably mounted on a frame 133 which is free to more without turning on a rod 134 carried by lllt side frames 120 and 121. Between the frame 120 and the end of the side 35 lay frame I33 there is ii spring 135 by which the side lay is pressed toward the frame 121 and at thcother eiil of the frame 133 there is a wedge shaped collar 130 which is counccted by a link 137 to a lever on the rod 130 and is fitted to work between inclined faces on the end of the frame 133 and on the side frame 121, by and through which the side lay receives a small moti n toward the side frame 120 as the table coin letcs its upward 96 movement and the sheet is t irrcby positively moved to its side registering position. When the table is in its highest sition a sheet is placed upon the tapes an carried by them up to the fingers 138. What I claim. on connection with platen printing presses is:--
