This invention relates to sheet metal cans having flat tops, the can top having a tubular nozzle through which its contents may be inserted and removed. A sheet metal cover is provided to close the nozzle, the
cover having a flange which has a close frictional fit on theperiphery. of the nozzle and requires the application of a considerable degree of force to apply the cover.
The invention has for its object to enable the nozzle to be supported whilethe cover is being. applied thereto in such manner that the pressure exerted on the cover willnot distort or press the flat top of the can inwardly.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,Figure 1 representsa top plan view of a portion of the can embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents aiside elevation of a portion of the top of the can, parts of the nozzle andv cover being shown in section. Fig. 4E represents a sectional view of a modification.
The same reference characters indicate the same or similar parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, 12 represents a flat top of a sheet metal can which may be of any desired form, the top being provided with a circular opening 13 which is surrounded by a nozzle suitably secured to the top and projecting upwardly therefrom. The nozzle is composed of an inner or base portion 1 1 attached to the top 12 an outer portion 15 of greater diameter than the inner portion, and an intermediate connecting portion 16 which constitutes a shoulder between the inner and outer portions.
17 represents the cover which is a flat disk adapted to be seated on the outer end of the nozzle, said outer end constituting a seat for the inner side of the cover, a packing disk 18 of compressible material such as cardboard beingpreferably applied to the inner surface of the cover and formed to bear on the outer end of the nozzle. The cover is provided with a cylindrical flange 17 a which is formed to have a close frictional fit on the periphery of the portion 15 of the nozzle,
said periphery constituting a flange seat. The outer end of the nozzle is preferably contracted and constitutes a cover seat lo cated within the margin of the packing disk 18.
Owing to the fact that the flange 17 tightly fits its seat on the nozzle, a considerable pressure is required to force the cover and its flange to place on the nozzle. prevent this pressure from buckling the flat top 12 inwardly, a supporting device is engaged with the shoulder 16 as indicated by I dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, said device as here shown being a pair of nippers having segmental jaws 19 adapted to bear on the portion 14 of the nozzle immediately below the shoulder.
In applying the cover to the nozzle, the supporting device is held against the shoulder16 in such manner as to resist the'downward pressure exerted while the cover flange is being forced to place on its seat, the supporting device being then removed.
' The shoulder 16 is'preferably tapered or" inclined as shown by Figs. 2 and 3, and its base portion where itjoins the portion 14 'of the nozzle is lower than the inner edge of the flange seat, so that the flange may be forced to place while the nozzle is supported by the device 19 without being obstructed by said device.
The flange 17* may be provided with'an aperture 20 extending partly across it, the
lower edge of the flange extending continuously across the aperture and forming a narinner and outer portions 14 and 15 of the nozzle are of the same diameter, and are connected by an outwardly projecting periphrow portion 17 adapted to be severed by a eral bead formed on the nozzle between said portions. The under side of said bead forms a shoulder l6 which is the equivalentof the shoulder 16 and is adapted to bear on the jaws 19 when the cover is being forced to place onthe nozzle.
The can top 12 is flat and unobstructed; that is to say, it has no upwardly projecting portions to interfere with the application of the jaws 19 to theshoulderlti or 16, saidshoulder being sufliciently elevated above all parts of the top to enable the jaws to be interposed between the shoulder and the top so that the nozzle may be located close to one or more sides of the can as shownby Fig. 1.
I claim A sheet metal can having an unobstructed flat top a tubular nozzlecomprising an-inner cylindrical portion attached to the can top, an outer cylindrical portion, and an intermediate connecting portion forming a shoulder located between the inner and outer portions and elevated above the top sufiiciently to permit a supporting device to be interposed between the shoulder and top,
the periphery of the said outer portion constituting a cover flange seat while its outer end forms a cover seat, and a cover formed to bear on the cover seat and provided with a flange projecting from its margin and formed to have a close frictional fit on the said flange seat, said shoulder being'adapted to be engaged by a sup orting device resisting the pressure which orces the flange onto its seat.
