Routt and State of Colorado, have inventedv certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches and its object resides in the provision of a wrench of simple construction, the jaws of which are automatically locked in their adjusted position by contact with the nut or other object to which they are applied.
I attain this object' by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which- Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of the improved wrench with the jaws locked in their relative positions, Fig. 2, a similar view with the parts in the position they occupy when the jaws, are unlocked for adjustment and Fig. 3, a transverse section taken along the line 3-3 Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 2 designates the stationary jaw of the wrench which is formed integral with and at the extremity of a sheath 3 in which the shank 4 of the adjustable aw 5 is longitudinally movably fitted. The shank 4 has along one of its edges a series of serrations which, when the parts are in the normal, locked position, are engaged by the correspondingly serrated face of a locking member 6 which is laterally movably carried in a recess 7 of the jaw 2. The member 6 has a beveled portion opposite to its serrated face which is normally engaged by the concave edge of a stem 8 which is formed integral with a plate 9, normally supported upon the working face of the jaw 2. The stem 8 has a limited, longitudinal movement in a slot 10 formed in the jaw 2 transversely with relationl to the recess 7, and its lower extremity protruding beyond the lower end of the said slot, is provided with a milled thumb-piece 12, by means of which it may be readily adjusted for the purpose of unlocking the movable jaw 2. A screw 13 which projects through a longitudinal slot in the stem 8 determines the extent of its longitudinal displacement, and a screw 14 which occupies a threaded opening in the wall of the sheath 3, projects into a longitudinal groove 15 in the shank 4 to limit the outward movement of the latter.
When the parts are in the locked position as shown in Fig. 1, the plate 9 is in engagement with the working face of the stationary jaw 2, while `itsstem 8 holds the locking member 6 in contact with the serrated edge of the shank 4 of the movable jaw 5, by the engagement of its oblique edge with the beveled face of the said member. When it is desired to apply the wrench to a nut or other object, the user separates the plate `9 from the Aface of the jaw 2 by pressure exerted upon the thumb-piece 12 of the stem 8, which latter, in its adjusted position, is disengaged from the member 6, and permits it to move laterally free from engagement with the serrated edge of the shank 4 when the latter is moved longitudinally to separate the two jaws. The two parts are maintained in this position, which is shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, until, by movement of the jaw 5 against the object to be clamped, the plate 9 ispressed against the face of the jaw 2 when the stem 8 has moved the locking member 6 to its original position in which its serrations interlock with those on the shank 4. The wrench may be removed from the object to which it has been applied by sliding it laterally along the faces engaged by its jaws.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A wrench comprising a stationary jaw, a movable jaw having a serrated shank, a laterally movable locking member carried by the said stationary jaw and having serrations to engage those on the shank, and a longitudinally movable element composed of a plate normally engaging the working face of the movable jaw and a stem having an oblique face to engage a face of the locking member opposite to its serrations.
2. A wrench comprising a stationary jaw, a'movable jaw having a serrated shank, a laterally movable locking member carried by the said stationary jaw and having serrations to engage those on the shank, and a longitudinally movable element projecting beyond the working face of the movable jaw to engage an object clamped between the two jaws, the said element being adapted to normally maintain the locking member in engagement with the serrations of the shank.
3. A wrench comprising a stationary aw, a movable jaw having a serrated shank, a laterally movable locking member carried by the said stationary jaw and having serrations to engage those on the shank, and a longitudinally movable element projecting beyond the working face of the movable jaw to engage an object clamped between the two jaws, the said element having an oblique face which by engagement with the locking member will move it in engagement with the serrations on the shank.

A wrench comprising a stationary jaw, a movable jaw having a serrated shank, a laterally movable locking member carried by the said stationary jaw and having ser rations to engage those on the shank, and a longitudinally movable element composed of a plate normally engaging the working face of the movable jaw and a stem having an oblique face to engage a Jface of the locking member opposite to its serrations, and at its extremity, a thumb-piece to facilitate its manipulation.
5. A wrench comprising a stationary jaw having a lateral recess and a relatively transverse slot, a movable aw having a serrated shank, a looking member movable in said recess and having serrations to engage those on the shank, and an element composed of a stem movable within the said slot and having an oblique face to engage a face on the said member opposite to itsl serrations and a plate normally engaging the working face of the movable aw.
6. A wrench comprising a stationary jaw having a lateral recess and a relatively transverse slot, a movable jaw having a serrated shank, a locking member movable in said recess and having serrations to engage those on the shank, and an element composed of a stem movable within the said slot and having an oblique tace to engage a :tace on the said member opposite to its serrations and a plate normally engaging the working face of the movable jaw, the said stem having at its portion protruding beyond the said slot, a thumb-piece to facilitate manipulation.
7. A wrench comprising a stationary aw provided with an integral sheath, a movable jaw having a serrated shank within the said sheath, a laterally movable locking member carried on the stationary jaw and having serrations to engage those on the shank, and a longitudinally movable element composed of a plate normally engaging the working face of the movable jaw, and a stem having an oblique face adapted to engage with a face on the said member opposite to its serrations.
