Description
' E. R. PERKINS.
AUTOMATIC GAS PRESSURE ALARM.
APPLICATION FILED JAN], 1908. RENEWED MAR. 14, 1910. 1,009,338.
tented Nov. 21, ,1911.
UNITED STATES EARL Benson PERKINS, or CLEVELAND, OHIO.
AUTOMATIC GAS-PRESSURE ALARM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21 1911.
Application filed January 7, 1908, Serial No. 409,709. Renewed March 14, 1910. Serial No. 549,358.
' To all whom it may conce'm:
Be it known that I, EARL R. PERKINS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at furnaces, the object being to provide an alarm which will be sounded when the fiow of gas through the pipe is stopped or 'de-' creased to such an extent that the back pressure in the furnace might blow the gas out.
\Vith this object in View, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully describedand pointed out in the claims.-
' In the drawing forming a part of this specification :l*igure 1 1s a side elevational view of my improved alarm. Fig. 2 1S :1
. longitudinal sectional view of the same, the
battery, bell and switch being omitted. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4- is a longitudinal sectional View through the alarm showing the circuit closed.
In the drawing A indicates a casing formed of two sections A, A connected together by screws and having a rubber gasket arranged between the same, so as to form an air-tight joint. The sections being provided with oppositely disposed threaded bores in which are secured the threaded ends of the supply-pipe B and the discharge pipe the supply-pipe B extending into the casing and having a rubber sleeve 1) secured over its end which is cut oil obliquely and has a brass washer E secured over its end, the face of which is roughened, and is connected to the end of a line-wire F which passes through a rubber plug arranged in a bore formed in the casing and connected to a bell G forisounding an alarm as will" be hereinafter fully described. The wire being provided with a switch F, so that the circuit can be broken thereby preventing the bell. from ringing after the gas has been cut oii'.
' The section A of the casing is provided with oppositely disposed openings in its sides, in which are arranged rubber sleeves H through which extend binding posts I, to which is connected a linewire J leading from a battery K which. is connected to the bell G by a wire K. The inner ends of thebinding post I are provided wit-hneedlehearings in which is pivotally mounted a pointed end of a shaft, L which isprovided with an arm L carrying a brass gauze frame M which is provided with a central opening and is covered on its outer'face by a thin sheet of parafiin coated paper N so as to prevent the gas frompassing through the gauze and it will be seen that this frame will be normally held out of engagement with the brass-washer E. by the pressure of the gas and when the pressureis reduced, the frame will drop by gravity and complete the circuit, so astor sound the .alarmand prevent any danger of an explosion if the burner should go out and the supply. of gas be returned to its normal I position.
, From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided an arm .WithAiery novel means for closing an opened circuit when the flow of is decreased.
Having thus fully described'my-invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is *1. In a device of the kind describedfthe,
combination with a casing provided with inlet and outlet pipes through which fluid is adapted to flow, of a washer'forming a contact carried by the inlet pipe, a pivoted arm mounted in the casing carrying a wire gauze frame forming a contact normally in contact with the Washer, an electrical alarm circuit having terminals connected respectively to said contacts, and a "nonporous, non-conducting cover for said gauze.
2. The combination with a. casing provided with an inlet and an out-let pi fe through which fluid is adapted .to be passe of a rubber tube secured over the inlet pipe; a contact carried by the rubber tube, a
' pivoted contact mounted in said casing and normally in cont-act with the first mentioned contact. and. ada ted to be held away from said contact by 1; 1e pressure of the fluid, and an electrical alarm circuit having its terminals connected, respectively, with said contacts.
In a device of the kind described, the combination with a casing provided with an inlet and an outlet pipe, of a sleeve arranged over-the end of the inlet pipe within said casing. a contact member secured over the end of said sleeve, binding posts secured in side walls ofsaid casing over said sleeve,
eoeyeee said biiiding posts being provided with respectively, whereby an alarm will be needle-bearings, a shaft mounted in said sounded when said gauze-frame engages 1e bearlng provlded With an arm, a gauze said contae't member frame carried. by the arm a paper covering l l T i on the outer face of the gziuze frame, and an EARL AANSOM I electriealelarm circuit having one terminal Witnesses:
connected to the binding posts and the other H. B. McMAi-iom,
terminal connected to the Contact member, H. A. Pmmme
