DETACHABLE LEG FOR LADDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 15, 1911. Serial No. 608,809.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hollywood, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Detachable Leg for Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a leg which may be detachably secured to one side of a ladder, so as to adapt it for use on uneven or inclined surfaces.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, and referring thereto:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the ladder in position for use, showing the same resting on an inclined support or surface. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line a0 0'0 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line ac -m in Fig. 2.
l designates the ladder to which the leg is to be attached, said leg comprising a bar or. piece of scantling 2- and a plurality of clamps secured thereto and adapted to engage one of side. bars 1 of the ladder 1 for securing the said leg to the ladder. Each of the said clamps may consistof a U-shaped member 3 of metal, said member 3 having flanges 4: resting on the outer face of the bar 2 and secured to said bar by bolts 5. One arm 6 of the U-shaped member 3 is of sufficient length to extend alongside of the side bar 1 of the ladder and is provided at its end with a lug or projection 7 adapted to engage the inner face of said side bar of the ladder to grip the ladder firmly to the leg member 2. A screw 8 works in a screwthreaded eye 9 0n the other arm 10 of the member 3, said screw being provided with operating means, such as a crank portion 11, whereby it may be rotated to cause its inner end to engage with the side bar 1.
In using the device, the screws 8 are loosened and the clamps are slipped over one of the side bars 1 of the ladder, the inner face of the leg 2 being brought against the outer face of said side bar. The screws 8 are then operated by the crank means 11 to cause their inner ends to press tightly against the side bar 1 of the ladder and to force said side bar 1 into tight engagement with the other arm of the clamp and with the lug or projection 7.
The leg may be attached to the ladder while the ladder is placed in position for use and slid up or down on the ladder so as to give the necessary lengthening for the corresponding side of the ladder according to the requirements of the supporting surface or ground on which the ladder is to stand. In this manner the same ladder can conveniently and safely be used in different locations where the nature of the ground is such.
that an ordinary ladder could not otherwise be used without some special supporting means. In case it is desired to use the ladder without such leg, the leg can be quickly andconveniently removed from the ladder at any time.
What I claim is:
1. A detachable leg for ladders comprising a bar adapted to lie in contact with the outside of a side bar of the ladder, a plurality of clamps secured to the outer side of said bar, each of said clamps being U-shaped and having one arm extending past the bar a sufficient distance to engage the inner face of said side bar of the ladder and provided at its end with an inwardly extending lug for engagement with the inner side of said side bar of the ladder, and a screw working in the other arm of said clamp and adapted to engage said side bar of the ladder.
2. A detachable leg for ladders comprising a bar adapted to lie in contact with the outside of a side bar of the ladder, a plurality of clamps secured to the outer side of said bar, each of said clamps being U-shaped and having one arm extending past the bar a sufficient distance to engage the inner face of said side bar of the ladder and provided at its end with an inwardly extending lug for engagement. with the inner side of said side bar of the ladder, a screw working in the other arm of said clamp and adapted to engage said side bar of the ladder, and said screw being provided with a crank portion for operation thereof.
