LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON BLOUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing'in the borough of Manhattan, in the city and county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to lamps generally, but more particularly to the burners thereof; and it has for its chief object to so improve the construction of lamp burners, of the central-draft type particularly the character of burner shown and described in the patent granted to S. B. Morss, November 23, 1910, and numbered 941,163, that their efiiciency in operation will be materially enhanced.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent upon a full and complete disclosure thereof.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts, and the combination of the same, as will be hereinafter fully disclosed and briefly stated in the claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a lamp, partly in vertical section, showing my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2, is a transverse section of the upper part of the air tube taken just above the upper member of the wick-raiser.
Referring to the view, the numeral 1, indicates a lamp provided with a suitable base 2, a filling-orifice 3 closed by a removable closure 4, and a burner-guard 5.
The bottom of the oil-reservoir is provided with a central opening 6 surrounded by an upwardly-projecting flange 7 and fitting over said flange is one end of a central air-tube 8 which projects up through said reservoir and the burner-guard, the latter being seated upon a collar 9 screwed into the neck of the reservoir, and is detachablyconnected to the collar by any well-known means, (not shown), such as a bayonetjoint. The burner-guard is provided centrally with a. tube 10, which is concentrically-arranged with the tube 8 and spaced a suflicient distance therefrom to alford ample space for the tubular wick 11.
Arranged in the upper part of the tube 8 is a support 12, composed of a plurality of dome-shaped wings 13, preferably three or four, and having a central aperture 1-1 therethrough. Vertically movable upon the support, and guided thereby, is a tubular air-distributer 15 which is provided with a perforated, flaring gasifier or generator 16 having an outwardly-projecting extinguisher-flange 17 resting upon the top edge of the Wick. The tubular body of the airdist-ributer is spaced apart from the tube 8 to provide an air-passage 18, and the top of the air-distributer is provided with a solid plate 19 to which is detachably-connected a spring-restrained rod 20 which exerts a constant downward-pressure upon the air-dis tributer to maintain the extinguisher-flange with a constant pressure upon the top edge of the'wick, so as to prevent the generated gas from escaping between said flange and said top edge and thereby become mingled with the outside flame, but to allow it to escape through the gasifier or generator. The rod 20 passes through the aperture 14 in the support and through an apertured guide 21 in the lower part of the tube 8, and a coilspring 22 having one end seated against a head 23 011 the rod, and the other end against the guide 21, serves to exert a constant downward pressure 'upon said rod, as hereinbefore mentioned.
The wick is raised and lowered by means of the following described mechanism: A pair of wick-raisers 24, are arranged at opposite sides of the tubular wick, and connected to said wick-raisers, by means of links 25, is an annulus 26, which, in turn, is connected, by an arm 27 ,with the lower end of a vertically-movable tube 28, the upper end of which is closed by a plug 29, and screwed into said plug is an operating rod 30 which passes up through and is guided by a tube 31 secured by any suitable means to the bottom Wall of the reservoir. The upper edge of the wick-raisers are provided with spurs adapted to engage the wick, and by pushing the operating-rod upward through the tube 31 the tube 28; is raised, and thereby the annulus 26 and wick-raisers 24, the movement of the rod being limited by the adjustable nut 32 which, may be brought to any predetermined position upon the rod 30 to regulate the height the wick may be raised.
It will be noted that the air-distributer, by reason of the winged guide, which forms an important feature of my invention, is
accurately centered, and truly guided in its vertical movements within the tube 8. Air is taken in through the perforations 33 and 34, and passing up through tube 8 and the air-chamber 18, enters the gasifier or generator, where the generation of the gas takes place. In the ordinary lamp the guard is rigid with the lamp collar, which is highly objectionable, as dust accumulates in the inner cup-shape flange, as shown at 35, and becoming soaked with oil soon forms a caked and rancid deposit, difficult to re move, but by making the guard detachable from the collar, the part may be easily kept. clean, as may be the entire burner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A central draft-burner having in combination a central airtube, a wick-tube concentrically-arranged around the upper portion of said air-tube, afiXed centering-support arranged'in the upper end of the airtube, an air distributer vertically movable on said support and guided, thereby, said air-distributer being spaced apart from the central air-tube to form an air-chamber, and provided with a gas-generator carrying an extinguisher-flange, and means exerting a constant downward pressure on the air-distributer and thereby on said extinguisherflange.
2. A central draft-burner having in combination a central air-tube, a wick-tube concentrically-arranged around the upper portionof the air-tube, a support fixed in the upper end of said air-tube, said support having centering wings, an air-distributer vertically-movable on said wings and guided' thereby, a gas-generator carried by the airdistributer and provided with an extinguisher-flange, an air-chamber formed between the central air-tube and the air-distributer, said air-chamber being in communication with said central air-tube, and means exerting a constant downward pressure on both air-distributer and extinguisher-flange.
3. A central draft-burner having in combination a central air-tube, a wick-tube concentrically arranged around the upper portion of the air-tube, a centering-support arranged in the upper end of said air-tube, a vertically-movable air-distributer mounted on said support and guided thereby, a gasgenerator carried by the air-distributer and provided with an extinguisher-flange, an air-chamber formed between the central airtube and the air-distributer, said air-chamber being in communication with said central-air-tube, and a spring restrained rod passing through the central air-tube for exerting a constant downward pressure on both air-distributer and extinguisher-flange.
4. A central draft-burner having in combination a central air-tube, a wick-tube concentrically-arranged around the upper portion of the air-tube, a support fixed in the upper end of said air-tube and provided with a number of centering wings, an airdistributer vertically-movable on said wings and guided thereby, a gas-generator carried by the air-distributer and provided with an extinguisher-flange, and a spring-restrained rod exerting a constant downward pressure on both airdistributer and extinguisherflange.
5. A central draft-burner having in combination a central air-tube, a wick-tube concentrically-arranged around the upper portion of the air-tube, a centering-support arranged in the upper end of said air-tube, a
vertically-movable air-distributer mounted on said support and guided thereby, a gasgenerator carried by the air-distributer and provided with an extinguisher-flange, an air-chamber formed between the central airtube and the airdistributer, said air-chamber being in communication with said central air-tube, a spring-restrained rod passing through the central air-tube for exerting a constant downward pressure on both air distributer and extinguisher-flange, and means for raising and lowering the wick.
6. A central draft-burner having in combination a central air-tube, a wick-tube concentrically-arranged around the upper portion of the air-tube, a support fixed in the upper end of said air-tube and provided with a number of curved centering wings, an air-distributer vertically-movable on said wings and guided thereby, a gas-generator carried by the air-distributer and provided with an extinguisher-flange, a spring-restrained rod exerting a constant'downward pressure on both air-distributer and extinguisherflange, means for adjusting the wick, and means for holding the same in ad justed position.
