To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Marrirnw O. TnoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, county of Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transformers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electric transformers, and its object is an improved form of construction for such apparatus.
I have illustrated and described my invention as applied to transformers of the type shown in Patent No. 861,029, V. A. Hall, though it is not limited in its application to this type of transformer. Such transform ers, as previously constructed, have consisted of a casing or tank inclosing the trans former core and winding and partially filled withpil for insulating and cooling the same. Fastened in any suitable manner to the transformer structure is -a terminal board to which are led the terminals of the transformer winding and the conductors leading outside the transformer casing. This terminal board in the past has been arranged so that it will be above the oil which only partially fills the transformer casing. I have found that if this terminal board be submerged in the oil, lightning or high potential surges do less injury to the transformer, and further that the transformer structure may be rendered more compact. If, however, this terminal board he placed adjacent to the transformer core and winding, unless special precautions are taken, the circulation of oil in the transformer would be impaired and the full effects of oil cooling would not be obtained.
The object of my invention then is the construction of a special terminal board which may be submerged in the oil in a plane above the windings and the core closely adjacent to the transformer structure and interfering to a minimum degree with the oil circulation.
I accomplish the object of my invention by providing the terminal board with a large hole or aperture which for the special type of transformer which I have illustrated is substantially'above the central leg of the transformer core, thereby permitting a free circulation of the oil in the transformer cas- I or a further understanding of my inven- Specifieation of Letters Patent.

Referring first to Fig. i the casing 1, provided with a suitable c aver, contains the transformer core 2 and windings 3, these being submerged in oil, 0 r other suitable insulating fluid, which fil s the transformer casing to the level shown by the dotted line. The principle upon which my invention works is as follows: VVhm the transformer is operating, the centra' leg of the trans former core, with the surrounding windings, will be the hottest orti n of the structure. The oil in the vicinlty of these portions will become more highly hea' ed than that adjacent to the other portion& of the transformer core and windings, and, )wing to the difference in weight between the hotter and the cooler oil, a circulation will be set up, as shown by the arrows in Tig. 1. The heated oil will tend to rise through the spaces between the transformer w ndings and through the spaces between the wf ndings and the core and will pass up throng: the hole or aperture in the terminal board and thence flow downward adjacent to th e sides of the transformer casing. It will b seen then that with my improved form of to 'minal board a free circulation of the oil or insulating fluid is obtained in the transfori 1er structure.
While I have describ :d a preferred embodiment of my invention as applied to a transformer having central and external which will be obvious to those skilled in the art and not depart from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,
l. A transformer comprising in combination an inclosing casing, an insulating fluid in said casing, a core in said fluid, windings surrounding said core, and a terminal board for the windings submerged in said fluid in a plane above the windings and the core having an aperture permitting a free circulat-ion of said fluid.
2. A transformer comprising in combination an inclosing casing, an insulating fluid in said casing, a core in said fluid having central and external legs, windings surrounding a portion of said core, and a terminal board for the windings submerged in said fluid above the windings and core having an aperture substantially above the central core leg permitting a free circulation of said fluid.
