CARL SPEAK, 0F NUREMBERG-DOOS, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO J. l i. SPEAR & SONS, OF NUREMBERG-DOOS, GERMANY, A FIRM.
PAPER DOLL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL SPEAR, a member of the firm of J. W. SIEAR & Sons, and a resident of N 'uremberg-Doos, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Dolls, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to paper dolls.
A notable object thereof is to provide a simple, cheap and practical paper doll which is so constructed that the head may be read ily attached to or detached from the body or be made to assume a plurality of diiferent positions in relation to said body.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
This invention accordingly consists of the features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherem is shown a preferred embodiment of the in vention: Figure 1 isa pictorial front view of a paper doll made in accordance therewith. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the head. Fig. 3 1S a sectional detail view showing how the parts are detachably held together.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings and speci fication.
In order that a better understanding of the invention may be had, it may here be noted that it is often desirable to manufacture and put up for sale, as a complete outfit, a single doll body and a plurality of detachable heads, representing diiferent types of face and different facial expression and any one of these heads may be fitted to the body and be made to assume different positions relative thereto, in accordance with the desire of the user.
Now referring to the drawings for a description of the preferred embodiment of this invention, 1 denotes the body of the doll or figure which is cut from paper, cardboard or similar material and is provided at 2 with an integral upwardly extending neck portion. Although, as stated above, a plurality or set of heads is ordinarily provided with each body, it is here deemed suflioient be seen that the head 2 is provided adjacent the lower portion ther :of with a member 4,
which may be a strip or piece of paper or cardboard secured at i s edges, except along the bottom thereof, tr the rear surface of' the head so as to consti tute with said head a downwardly opening ocket 5. The pocket strip or member may be secured to the head by means of paste or glue or in any other manner that preference dictates. The pocket 5 is designed and adap ;ed to receive therein the aforesaid neck por ion of the body, the former tapering or ha ing a curved boundary line, as shown at i, and the latter terminating in a similarly tapered or curved edge, as shown at 7, W1 .ereby after the head has been properly plar ed on the body, the inclination thereof wit], respect to the body may be modified at wll to produce many different and varied e: fects.
It will accordingly be seen that this invention is one well adaptad to attain the ob j ects hereinbefore menti Jned in a thoroughly practical manner and i; is to be also noted that simplicity and chaapness of structure are combined with facility of operation and a neat appearance.
As many changes cc uld be made in the above construction an d many seemingly widely different adaptations of this invention could be made witI [out departing from the scope thereof, it is i1 tended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompan ving drawings shall be considered as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus describer my invention, what I claim as new and des: re to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an article of the character described, in combination, a heal provided with a pocket and a body having a neck extension adapted to lie within said pocket, said neck extension terminating ii. a curved edge and the boundary line of sa d pocket being correspondingly shaped to Jermit of manipulation of said head upon said neck whereby the inclination thereof 1 elative to said body may be varied at will.
2.' In an article of the character described, in combination, a body portion; a head portion; a pocket formed by pasting a strip upon Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
the back of one of said portions, the walls 015 be supported upon said body portion by the 10 said pocket along one edge thereof being contact of the edge of said extension with free from attachment with each other; an the interior boundary of said pocket.
extension formed upon the other of said In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, portions and adapted to enter between said in the presence of two Witnesses. unattached Walls of said pocket; the said CARL SPEAR. extension and the said pocket being so Witnesses:
formed that upon the one being inserted RALPH W. Dox,
Within the other, the said head portion Will ELISABETH HELLMUTH.
