Be it known that I, THORNTON E. WVINTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Humble, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
Wy invention relates to new and useful improvements in valves.
The object of the invention is to provide a valve of the character described composed of a stationary valve seat and a movable part designed to operate thereagainst, said movable part being so constructed as to minimize the wear thereof and also of the'seat against which the same operates.
With the above and other objects in view my invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction and operation an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1, is a sectional side elevation of the complete valve and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the seat.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 refers to the valve seat which is designed to be screwed into the pump casing in the ordinary manner. From the center of this seat is supported the valve stem 2, secured by screw thread as shown in Fig. 1. Fit-ting over this stem is the thimble 3 which is designed to reciprocate up and down thereon and which carries at its lower end an annular rim designed to support the disk 4: which is preferably composed of rubber or some similar mate rial, and is backed by the metallic plate 5.
The numeral 6 refers to a nut which is secured on said thimble by means of suitable threads and which may be screwed closely against the plate 5 and is designed to hold said plate and disk firmly between said nut and the flange carried by the lower end of the thimble 3. This arrangement will effectually prevent the liquid and the grit and sand carried thereby, from passing between the disk and valve stem and cutting and wearing away said disk, as is the case in valves now used in a similar manner. The disk 4: is normally held against its opposing seat by means of a coil spring 7 which operates thereagainst and in resistance to the pump casing 8. The plate 5 is provided with an annular rib 9 which is provided to receive the lower end of this spring and to hold the same in place.
The prime object of this invention is to prevent the passage of the fluid back and forth through between the movable part and the valve stem and the cutting and wearing away of the valve parts by the grit and sand carried by said fluid, and it is obvious that this object will be attained by means of the construction hereinbefore set forth.
What I claim, is
1. In a device of the character described a valve seat carrying threads upon its periphery, a centrally located valve stem supported thereby, a thimble which carries a flange upon its lower end and integral therewith and forming a housing for said valve stem and designed to reciprocate upon said stem, a disk carried by said thimble and designed to reciprocate with said thimble on said stem, a nut secured upon said thimble and designed to hold said thimble and disk rigid with relation to each other and a resilient means surrounding said thimble and operating in resistance to said disk and normally holding said disk against said seat.
2. In a device of the character described a valve seat carrying threads upon its periphery, a valve stem supported thereby, a thimble carrying a flange upon its lower end and the other end of which is closed, a resilient disk carried by said thimble, a metallic backing for said resilient disk, said thimble, disk, and metallic backing designed to reciprocate upon said stem and form a housing therefor, an annular rib carried upon the upper surface of said metallic backing, a coil spring surrounding said thimble and resting, normally, on said metallic backing and adapted, normally, to hold said resilient disk against said valve.
3. In a device of the character described; a valve seat carrying threads upon its periphery; a centrally located valve stem carried thereby; a valve, said valve comprising a rubber disk, a thimble, having one end closed and the other end carrying a flange and passing through said disk and designed to reciprocate upon said stem, and a metallic backing for said disk; means for holding said thimble, disk, and metallic backing firmly together; an annular rib carried upon the upper side of said metallic backing name to this s and a coil spring surrounding said thimble and resting, normally Within said annular v rib and on said metallic backing and adapted to, normally, hold said disk against said valve seat.
