looses "CHARLES ALDEN, OF NEVVBURG, NEW' YORK.
lIlWlPROlIED` VAPPARATUS FOR DRVlNG AND EVAPORATING.
Specification ffii-ming part of Letters Patent No. 100,835, dated March 15, 1870.
To att whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that il, CHARLEs ALBEN, of Newburg, in the county ot' Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and lmproved l'vaporator; and I do hereby declare the following to he a.` full, clear, and exact description thereof,` which will enable those skilled in the art to malte and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, inA which drawin'g---v l y Figure l represents a transverse vertical section off this invention. Fig`.2is a longitudinal vertical section ot' ,the same. Fig. Sis ahori- `zontal section ofthe same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. This invention consists in thearrangement of a series ot' platforms attached to endless chains, and receivinga rising-axul-t'alling motioinin a truuk or 4 chamber supplied with a current or currents of hot or cold air in snph a manner that if' said platforms are loaded with any material containing moisture such moisture is rapidly evaporated with little trouble or'expense. On one or more sides ot' the trainiere air-chambers provided with noz v zles to'thrhw currents of air over or between the platforliis.' Said platforms are supported by fingers prqiectingiiom the endless chains, and so arranged thateach platform, after havin g been carried to the desired distance, is deposited upon a con ve'yer and thereby removed from the trunk.
In the drawing, the letters .A designate the side walls of'the trunk, which .form the bearings for the shafts B B, which carry the chain-\\'heels O Q andthe endless chains D D. 4These chai ns are provided withli u gers E, which formthe supports for the platforms F. Said platforms are perforated witinsiliall Vhdles to allow a free circulation ofthe air,and theyare held in position in onedirection byr the sides of the trunk and in the vother by thecliains,
hand-crank, M ,or by a? pillley, M, said shaft vheilig connectedwithlthe chain-shafts li B vhy means of gcar-wl'lcelsK and `astop-pawl, Z,
which en gages with a ratchet-wheel, Y, mountd eden the slmft'L, serves to arrest the chains "llheechain-wheels UU at any desired point. at the bottom ot' the trunk are driven simply bg the chains, and it' the trunk is higli the c ains are steadied by intermediate guide-roll# ers. Each ot' the platforms on reaching the bottom of the'trunk is deposited upon the conveyer N, which receives motion hy a pulley, 0and small belt-wheels o o', and by this couveyer the successive platforms are carried ont ofthe trunk, sothat they can be readily removed and again introduced at the top ol" the trunk. 0n the sides ot' the trunk are 'arranged two air-cl1ambers, P P, which are supplied with hot or cold air from below, and whicli a're pro vided with nozzles p for the discharge of the air.` Bythese means currents of' hot or cold airthron-n over or between the platforms, and these currents areregulated by dampers r. .if hotair is used, suitable thermometers t may be applied/in boxes S, attached to the sides of the trnnk,'t0 indicate the temperature ot' the air in the Itrunk. Suitable lines Q Q, may be applied to introduce currents of cold air into the trunk to regulate the temperature, it desired.
The articles or. materials from which the moisture isv to bc evaporated are placed upon the platfori-ns, and, as said platforms move sldwly down through the trunk, the currents ot' air passingover or through said articles carry ofi' the moisture with great rapidity:
rlhis apparatus can be used with'great advantage for evaporating cane-juice vor other liquids of u. similar nature, or :for evaporating the moisture `contained in wool, cotton, grain, ,or other solid materials.
YVhat I claim as new, a-ndldcsire to secure. by Letters Patent, 1s." f A 1. The arrangement of a series of platforms attached to endless chains,l aud'recciv-iug a ris ing-or-falling motihn' in a 'trunk or 'chamber Eier?. being' provided with nozzles to tluciw currens nf air Gyex 0r between the pkgblorms, snbl fimiiiinlly as set forth 3. Th@ arrangement of' finffms projectingk from/lle eiullss clmins'f, armi capa-ble sul pm'rmgthe platforms flaring their rise or' falli, and of depositing the same automatically at the bot-tom of the truuk, substantially@ de scribed.,
4. The arrangement of a, conveyer, subst-mi tially :isv lescl-il)ed,: in cmbina-Lion with the platform and with the endless chains and vtheir tingrs, so as to renloveamidV platforms from Fthe bottom of'tlie' trunk.
