Description

ff/750%? l N. PETERS. PMGTO-LITHDGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C.
tantra' sata through the line :z: a: of' iig. 2.
STANLEY woRnnLL,
@anni (titties.
or QUINoY, ILLINOIS.
`Lehm Para: No. 100,831, ma March 15, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o! the same.
lo all whom it muy concern Bc it known that I, STANLEY E. WORRELL of Quincy, in the county ot' Adams, and State of Illinois, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Lune berTElevator and Washer; and I do hereby'declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in theI art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part ot' this specification.
Thisinvention relates to a new and useful Improve- I m'cnt in machines for elevating or drawing"7 and washing lumber, whereby the labor ordinarily-required for that operation is great-ly diminished, while the lumber is cleaned and suitably prepared for the planing-machine; and I It consists in `the construction and arrangement hereinafter described.I
In theaccompanying drawing- Figure l represents a vertical section of the machine,
Figure 2 is a plan view. I
Similar letters ot.refe'rence indicate corresponding parts. I
I arrange o`n a boat o r scow, A a steam-engine or other motive power, andfconnect therewith a series of drawing and brushing-rollers,supported upon an adjustable frame, and so arranged that the receiving end of the `frame may be directed to the'water for the re ception of the boards, as they are floated to the rollers by' an attendant, and also so arranged that the delivery end maybe directed to the pile and'be raised or lowered in height.
B C and B', and C represent the adjustable frame.
E and F the receivingIrollers.
G'G are the binsh-rollers or Scrapers, one on each side of the board, and H H represent the delivery rollers. I
I The frame B C may be of any desired length, and
any number of carrying-rollers may be employed. The frame is jointed at R, or at any other place or laces to facilitate the adjustment of the part B and y Kis a windlassfior adjusting the frame by means of tbe chain J, whichpasses over the pulleys L, or the frame B G' may be suspended in `any other manner suitable for the purpose.
After the board or piece ofluuiber has passed `between thebrushes yG G, I discharge one or 'more jets or streams of water upon it, for the purpose of cleaning oi` any dirt or sand which might otherwise re-` main.
The upper rollers on the frame areconuected with springs N, which arrangement allows boards or pieces ot'lumber of varying thickness to be received and elevated. f
O O represent the washing-tubes which extend across the flame, and discharge jets of water on to the sides of the board through perforations made for the purpose. These tubes are connected in any suitable mannerwith a force-pump, by which means the boards are thoroughly cleansed, as before mentioned.
P represents the carrying-rollers. rllhe receivingrollers and the carrying and delivery-rollers are revolved by means of belts or endless chains ou the pulleys S from the motive power, in any convenient manner.
By this arrangement it will be seen that boards are' Adrawn into'the machine without being lii'tedfroln the water by hand.
Having thus described my invention, I I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The frame B C, B C', jointed at R, substantially as and for the purposes described. I r 2. In combination with a machine for elevating and washing lumber, the self-adjusting receiving, carrying, and delivery-rollers, arranged to operate substantially as described.
`3. The brushes or scraping-rollers G Gr for cleaning the lumber, arranged and operating substantially as described.
"4. The perforated water-tubes O O, substantially as and for the purposes described.
vWitnesses:
O; B. Gonnox, J. M. LUDWIG.
STANLEY E. 'ORRELL.
