The plate 19 is provided with a transverse bead to bear over a portion of the annular bead 11 of the body and also provided with vertical beads 20 spaced slightly apart at their adjacent ends forming bearings for the vertical portions 15 of the agitator-s. At their inner ends the bearings 20 are rounded to form stops for the elbows orv bends of the agitators, to limity their movement toward each other. By this means an eicient hinged connection is produced between the agitators and the bead whereby the agitatorsare held from vertical movement or movement toward or away from the screen 12. The ends of the body 1Q project considerably beyond the estremi;` ties of the hinge portions 15 and are provided with tight fitting cups or end-sect1ons 22. Graduations 22b are preferably formed in the sides of the cups 22 by means of which the contents of the same may be measured. i
ln operating the sifter one of the cups 22 is drawn from the, central section and the' material` to be sifted placed therein, the quantity thereof being measured by the graduations 22h. The body 10 is now insei-ted and forced into vthe cup 22, when the operator inverte the entire sifter. The contents now in the sifter falls upon the upper side of the screen 12. The operator grasps the handle18 firmly and swings the arm from side to side when the hinged body 10 rocks upon the rigid spindles 15 and stirs the contents in the upper chamber. The agitators 14 are lixed to the handle and remain stationary with respect to the screen 12 carried in the body and produce the .disintegration of the materialand feed the par icles thereof through the screen 12 into the lowerchamber. If desired, the sifter is. again inverted to dispose the material again inthe upper chamber when the operation is repeated and a second sifting is etlected without removing the contents from the device. This operation may be carried on indefinitely until the required sifting is effected It'will be observed from Figs. 1 and 2 that when the device is supported by the handle r18 the low-eijsplndle 15 presses against the innerl face of the bearing 21 and serves as a pivotal support for the entire body 10, relieving the marginal edge of the openingl ofthe pressure or wear of the support while passing therethrough. The ag1tators 14s-disturb the material which rests upon the screen 12 and cause the same to pass through the screen into the lower Section or chamber 22.`
In the modified form, disclosed-in Fig. 5`
of the drawings, the central section 10 is provided with the outwardly pressed bead '11 carrying the screen 12. The fixed section, lincluding the handle 18 having arms 16 and spindles 15 carrying'the agitators 14 is of the same form as abovehdescrlbed. The 'difference resides in formifig the openings 13a fart-her 'from the bead 11 in registration with the inner ends of the arms 16, and in passing the arms 16 through the openings 13a to dispose the spindles 15 against the inner side of the v'central section 10. The plate 19h employed in this modified form is in two sections which are respectively sei.' cured against the inner side of the body 10 1 at the opposite sidesof the screen 12 and against the spindles 15. The plate sections 19 are provided with an interrupted bead 20tl for rotatably receiving the spindles 15. `rlhe beads 20 terminate short of the ends of the plate sections 19" and outwardly of the ends of the spindles 15 to provide end thrustbearings therefor, as is disclosed in Fig. 6.
