To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. DERFINAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mystic, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pin-Setting Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple form of hand tool by means of which pins may be rapidly and conveniently driven into wood, or the like material; the said tool being particularly useful for setting pins in so-called sand-rolls of the class used for taking up a web of pile fabric, like velvet, in velvet-weaving looms.
My invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, Figure 1 being an edge view of a tool embodying my present improvement, showing also a transverse sectional view of a roll in which several pins have been inserted. Fig. 2 is a face, or fiat side, view of said tool and shows a longitudinal, central, sectional, view of a portion of said roll, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal, central, sectional, view of the said tool.
Referring to these drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the body portion of said tool, the same being drawn down at one end portion to provide a tang or shank 11 upon which is secured a handle 12. The body 10 is drilled longitudinally to provide two parallel holes in which are slidably mounted rods 13 to whose outer end is fixedly secured a plate 14, and the said parallel holes are counterbored to receive springs 15 that surround the rods 13 and abut the inner face of the plate 1 1 in such manner that the springs seek constantly to force the plate outward, that is to say, away from the body 10, such outward movement being limited however, by a stop pin 13* inserted in one or both of the rods 13. The plate 1 1 is provided with one or more holes 16 in which pins (4 may be loosely entered, the body 10 being provided with depressions adapted to receive the pin points and thus hold said pins in alinenient with the holes 16. It will of course be understood that, normally, the plate 14c is forced outwardly by springs 15, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
IV hen the pin is inserted in the hole of plate 14; and the pin end rests in the described depression, the plate serves to steady the pin and to guide it straight as it is being forced into the wood; the plate meanwhile resting against the wood. As the pin is forced home the springs 15 yield and the body 10 pushes the pin or pins through the plate 14:, as will be understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 3.
By preference I insert in the body 10 short sections 17 of wire whose outer ends are prick-punched eccentric to the circumference of said wire, so that the depressions thus provided for the pin points may be adjusted to line up with the hole in plate 14 by partially rotating the said wire 17. I also provide set-screws 18 by means of which the wires may be clamped in position after they have been thus adjusted.
By the use of my improved tool I am able to set the pins very rapidly without the liability of bending the pins and with absolute accuracy as to the length of that portion of the pin that remains projecting from the wood.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1. In a pin setting tool, a body portion provided with a tang, a handle upon said tang, said body being provided with longitudinally disposed parallel holes, rods slidably mounted in said holes, a plate fixedly secured to the outer ends of said rods, springs acting to force said plate outwardly away from the body, means for limiting such outward movement, said plate being provided with pin-receiving openings.

In a pin setting tool, a body portion provided with a tang, a handle upon said tang, said body being provided with depressions to receive pin points and with longitudinally disposed parallel holes, rods slidably mounted in said holes, a plate fixedly secured to the outer ends of said rods, springs acting to force said plate outwardly away from the body, means for limiting such outward movement, said plate being provided with pinreceiving openings, and means in said body for alining the said depressions with the openings in the plate.
