To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK J. MATCHETTE, of the city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Collectors, and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention has for its object the provision of simple and effective means of separating dust, dirt and other foreign material from the air with which the same is entrained, with special reference to use in connection with mechanical'cleaning systems.

'15 More particularly the object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective means for dustseparation for use in a cleaning system which will insure thorough separation of foreign material from air and in so constructing the dust separator itself as to render the emptying and removal of dust therefrom, a matter of extreme simplicity and facility.

Other objects and advantages will become apparentfrom the detailed description hereinafter given, and for a full understanding of my present invention, a drawing accompanies and forms part of this specification in which Figure 1 is a central section of the dust collector, and Fig. 2 is a detail View showing the bag, extending below the collector casing.

Referring to the drawing, 1 esignates a receptacle or casing the lower pa t- 2 of which is '35 preferably funnel shaped or contracted. It

An air and dust inlet tube 5 formed with an external annular flange 5 adapted to rest on a 6 around an opening in the top of the is'threaded in or otherwise removecured (to said collar. To the lower end. if the'tube 5 is attached a tubular extension or strainer supporting member 7 formed with an outturned bead or rim 8 at its lower end. A flexible or collapsible strainer bag 9 made of a suitable fabric and having openings in its upper and lower ends, is attached at its upper end around the opening therein so by an elastic ring 10 or other fastening to.

The strainer bag is preferably gradually tapered or contracted toward the openings in its-ends as shown, and is provided at its lower-end with a closure 11, which may consist of a rubber band or other means which may be readily removed or loosened and replaced or tightened for discharging dust and dirt from the bag and closing the same after it has been emptied. The bag may be readily removed with the inlet tube 5 through the opening in the upper end of the casing 1, for renewal or repairs. Itis made of such length that when the closure 4 is removed its lower end will fall through and extend below the opening 3, thus enabling the operator to easily remove or loosen and replace or tighten the closure 11, and to grasp and shake the bag so as to detach and remove dust and dirt adhering thereto.

Although the strainer bag is collapsible it becomes immediately distended when a current of air is passed from the inlet 5 through the bag and out through the outlet 12 of the casing 1. In the operation of this device, the strainer bag is normally closed during the passage of dirt-laden air therethrough and through the casing, and is entirely Within the casing 1, the opening at the lower end of which is shut by the closure 1. lVhen it is desired to remove the dust collected within the bag and casing, closure 4 is removed allowing the lower portion of the bag 9 together with its closure 11 to drop through the opening and extend below the casing 1, which permits of a manipulation of this strainer bag for the purpose of cleaning as hereinbefore set forth.

It has been found in practice that the hereinbefore described apparatus is very effective in separating dust and dirt from air with which the same are entrained. At the same time the present dust collector provides simple means for the removal of dust Without the necessity of frequently removing the strainer bag. These advantages result from the novel structure hereinbefore described and it is to be understood that the form of dust collector described and shown in this specification and drawing is for illustrative purposes only and that various changes may be introduced without departing from the scope of my invention, the essential characteristics of which are pointed out in the following claims.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. In a dust collector the combination of a casing having a dust discharge opening in the lower partthereof, a dust and air inlet and an air out-let, a removable closure for a casing having a dust discharge opening in v mediate air outlet, a removable closurefor municating with the interior of the bag bag suspended within said casing in comand removable with said inlet tube through said discharge opening, a flexible strainer inunication with said dust and air inlet and havinga discharge opening at its lower end which is adapted to pass through andextendjf below the discharge opening in the casing when the closure therefor is removed, and a, closure for'the opening in the lower end of said bag. 2. In a dust collector the combination 'of/ thelower part thereof and an air outlet, a removable dust and air inlet tube fitted in an opening in the upper part of said casing, and a collapsible strainer. bag attached to said discharge opening, a flexible strainer; bag having openings in its upper and loweij ends and suspended wlthin said casing ,be-

tween its inlet and outlet with the inlet comthrough the opening in the upper end thereof, and a separate closure for the opening in the lower end of said bag which is adapted to pass through and extend below the opening in the lower part of said casing when the closure therefor is removed.

4. In a dust collector the combination of a casing having a removable dust and air inlet tube fitted in an opening in the upper part thereof, a dust discharge opening in the lower part thereof and an intermediate air outlet, a removable closure for said discharge opening, a collapsible strainer bag attached to and removable with said inlet tube through the opening in the upper part of the casing and having openings in its upper and lower ends, the inlet tube communicating with the interior of the bag through the opening in its upper end and a closure for the opening in the lower end of the bag which is adapted to pass through and extend below the opening in the lower part of the casing when the closure therefor is removed.
