To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT D. PALMER, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Pianos and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an attachment for pianos, piano players, organs and the like having pedals for controlling the volume of the tones played, and it generally has for its object to provide electromagnetically operated means controlled by the pedal of an ordinary piano or other like instrument, for using a bass drum.

This application is drawn to cover matter eliminated from my application filed May 14, 1909, Serial No. 1953M, on which Patent #956,502 was issued April 26, 1910.

It is the object of my invention to provide an attachment of the foregoing character that may be applied to any ordinary make of piano, or other similar instrument, without in any way damaging or requiring a rebuilding of the instrument.

In its more detail nature this invention also comprises those details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first described in detail, then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bass drum and cymbal with my invention applied, the piano pedals being indicated. Fig. 2, is a detail view of a part of the invention.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in which like letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, it will be observed that the bass drum 15 and cymbal 16 are actuated by a magnetically-actuated drum stick 17 that is pivoted at 18 to a bracket 19 that is secured to the drum. The drum stick 17 has an extension 17 that carries the armature 17 to cooperate with the magnet 20. The magnet 20 is electrically connected to a battery 21 by a wire 21 and is also electrically connected to a rheostat 22 by a wire 22 the rheostat lever arm 22 being connected by a wire 22 with a contact 23 that cooperates with a second contact 23 to close the circuit from the battery 21 through the Serial No. 602,989.

It is, of course, obvious that slight changes in the details of construction and arrange ment of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. In combination with a pedal, a bass drum, a bracket secured thereto, a drum stick pivoted to said bracket and having an armature, an electromagnet supported by said bracket to operate said armature and drum stick, an electric circuit including said magnet, a pair of contacts in said circuit to be moved by said pedal to close the circuit, and a source of energy for energizing said circuit.

2. In combination with a pedal, a bass drum, a bracket secured thereto, a drum stick pivoted to said bracket and having an armature, an electromagnet supported by said bracket to operate said armature and drum stick, an electric circuit including said magnet, a pair of contacts in said circuit to be moved by said pedal to close the circuit, a source of energy for energizing said circuit, and a rheostat in said circuit to vary the force of action of said magnet.

In combination with a pedal, a bass drum, a bracket secured thereto, a drum stick pivoted to said bracket and having an armature, an electromagnet supported by said bracket to operate said armature and drum stick, an electric circuit including said magnet, a pair of contacts in said circuit to be moved by said pedal to close the circuit, a source of energy for energizing said cir cuit, a rheostat in said circuit to vary the force of action of said magnet, a cymbal carried by said drum, and a cymbal clapper on said drum stick for engaging said cymbal.

4. In combination With a pedal, a bass drum, a bracket secured, thereto, a drum stick pivoted to said bracket and having an armature, an electromagnet supported by said bracket to operate said armature and drum stick, an electric circuit including said magnet, a pair of contacts in said circuit to be moved by said pedal to close the circuit, and a source of energy for energizing said circuit, a cymbal carried by said drum, and a cymbal clapper on said drum stick for engaging said cymbal.
