ELECTRIC REGULATION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 21,1911. Serial No. 634,496.
specification and drawing forming a part y electric regulation wherein it is desired to regulate a dynamo or generator in a predetermined manner and in accordance with the duty to be performed thereby.
Figure '1 is a diagrammatic representation of ,one type of system of electric distributionlcomprehending my invention. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic representation of a modified system comprehending my invention.
In the drawing, particularly Fig. 1, 1 represents a dynamo or generator provided with the usual field coil having in series therewith the variable resistance 3, in this instance indicated as of the carbon pile varilever normally drawn 1n an upward direction by the adjustable spring 5 and limited in its upward movement as by the adjustable screw 6. The lever dis provided at its extremity with the magnetic core? and it will be obvious that motion imparted to the core], by varying the resistance 3, may regulate the generator. 8 is a lever normally drawn in a downward direction by the adjustable spring 9 and has its motion limited in this direction by the adjustable screw 10. 11 is the positive lead of the generator. and is connected with the positive side of the storage battery 12 and through the switch 13 with the posltive side of the lamps or other translating devices indicated at 14. The negative terminals of the translating devices are connected with the wire 15 which is carried to one side of the translation circuit regulator 16 indicated in this instance as a resistance of, the carbon pile variety. .The opposite side of the carbon pile 16 is connected as by the Wire 17 with one side of the automatic switch 18 which may be of any of the wellknown varieties adapted to close the generator circuit when its voltage is substantially equal to that of the battery. The negative side of the storage battery 12 is connected to the main 17. The remaining terminal of the switch 18 is connected as by wirefl i across the same is through solenoid 20 with the negative brush of the generator. The core 21 is attached to the lever 8. and normally drawn in an up Wvard direction by excitation of the coil 20.
The core 7 is surrounded by 'the solenoid 22 in shunt across the generator circuit in such manner that excitation of the same tends to draw the core downwardly and increase the resistance 3. The coil 23 also surrounds the core 7 and is connected in shunt across the lamp regulator 10in such manner that current flowing in the. 001123 due to a drop in potential V across the resistance 16 will assist the coil 22 in drawing the core 7 downwardly. The carbon pile 16 isoper- 'ated by the lever 24: normally drawn. in a downward direction by the adjustable spring 25 and provided with a magnetic core surrounded by the solenoid 26 in shunt across the translation circuit.
In the system shown in Fig. 2 like numerals are used to designate like parts and the only difference between the two systems is that in Fig. 2 the coil 20 'inseries with the generator is su pressed and the coil :27 in serieswith the battery only used in its stead.
The operation of my invention is substantially as follows: If the generator be running at. avoltage sufilcient to charge the" storage battery, the switch 18.will be closed and current will flow from the generator 1 through the field coil 2, resis ance 3 and the generator maybe regulated by proper inanipulation of the resistance 3' in a- Wellknown manner. Current will also flow from the generator through the lead 11, storage battery 12, wire-17, switch 18, wire-19, and coil 20 to the generator and, if the speed of the enerator be such that its voltage be sufficient to supply the maximum current desired, I so adjust generator tend to exceed this current, the coil 20 Will lift the core 21 and raise the lever 8 against the action of spring 9 so as to increase the resistance 3 and prevent the current output from exceeding this maximum. lf nowthe battery be charged unt-il the maximum voltage desired-to have I reached, l thenso adjustthe spring 5 that any further rise in voltage will be prevented by the coil drawing the core 7 fdownwardly against the action of sprin'g5 and thus depressing the l0V61 4;.aI1(l desired I Patented 0a. 31, 1911'.
the spring 9 that if the c k increasingthe resistance 3 in a Well-known manner. As this voltage cannot be exceeded, the current through the battery will, of course, fall off if the voltage of the battery increases further. If now the lamp switch 13 be closed anda load thus thrown upon the translation circuit, it is desirable that the generator be carried at a voltage below the maximum desired upon the battery in order that there Will be less difiiere'nce of potential between the supply circuit and the translation circuit which difli'erence of po-- tential between the two circuits is usually dissipated in the form of Waste heat. I so adjust the spring 25 that when the maximum desired voltage across the translation circuit is reached, the coil 26 will raise the lever 24 and increase the resistance 16 in such manner as to hold the lamp voltage constant, and
this, of course, will cause a drop across the resistance 16 which will increase as the voltage upon the translation circuit tends to increase. This drop across 16 will cause current to how through the coil 23 which is wound to assist the coil 22 and the standard voltage which the coil 22 tends to hold across the leadsthroughout speed changes of the generator will be lowered and the generator may be thus controlled in response to voltage fluctuations at a lower voltage than the maximum voltage desired to have across the battery when there is no load, upon the translation circuit.
The operation of the system portrayed in Fig. 2 may be readily understood from the operation above outlined with regard to the system shown in'Fig. 1, it being only necessary to remember that the lever 8 in Fig. 2
- is controlled by the coil 27 in series with the 40 parture may be made in the way of details without departing from the scope of my invention which is as set forth in the following claims:
