To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD 1V. GERRISH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lasts, particularly to divided lasts connected together by a hinge, and having aportion of the hinge cut away to permit the shortening of the last when the heel part is moved about the hinge pivot toward the fore part.
The particular object of the invention is to provide a simple hinge of great strength which may be manufactured very cheaply, and it consists in positioning within a transverse opening in the fore part a cylindrical member having a diainetrical threaded opening therein, in which is positioned the threaded end of a bolt mounted in the heel part and extending through a vertical slot communicating with the said transverse opening.
The invention further consists of a looking bolt adapted when the last is lengthened to extend through an opening in the fore part and into a recess in said cylindrical member.
The invention further consists in a spring pressed tubular plug mounted =-in a recess in the fore part with its outer closed end rounded and bearing against the front face of the heel part.
The invention further consists in providing the fore part with a projection in which the hinge plug is mounted, having a face slightly eccentric to the center of said plug, so that when the last is shortened by moving the heel part about the hinge pivot, the contacting face of said heel part will bind on said eccentric face and retain it in such adjusted position.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be readily understood by referring to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.

In the drawings, 10 and 11 represent .respectively a fore part and a heel part of a separated as indicated at 12. rear face of the fore part 10 is a projection 13, through which extends a cylindrical transverse opening 14:, in which is centrally positioned a cylindrical metal plug 15 of less length than the opening 1a. This plug 15 is revoluble within said opening 14, and when positioned therein the ends of the opening 14 are closed by wooden plugs 16 glued therein and having their ends formed to conform to the shape of the last. By this construction of a hinge a very rigid connection is made between the fore part and the heel part of the last, which has great strength, and is wholly inclosed so that its parts icannot, under any circumstances, become displaced.
Should contacting surfaces become worn to any extent so that the frictional contact between the two parts of the last is insufii? 1 cient for'the proper operation thereof, the plug 26 may be bored out, the loose plug 25 removed, and the bolt 22 adjusted to re new the frictional contact. After this has been accomplished, the loose plug 25 is returned into the opening 20 and a new plug 26 is inserted and secured in position. In a vertical hole in the front end of the heel part 11 is mounted a locking bolt 27, the lower end of which normally extends through an opening 28 in the projection 13, with its extreme end positioned within a pheriphcral recess 29 formed in the plug 15. The upper end of the bolt 27 is surrounded by a staple 30, between which and 'a shoulder on said bolt 27 is interposed a spring 31, normally retaining the bolt 27 in the position indi? cated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The up per end of the bolt 27 is provided with a thumb piece 32'by' which the bolt 27 may be withdrawn from the recess 29 and from the hole- 28 to permit the movement of the heel part 11 about the pivot of the hinge when it is During this shortening operation the end of the bolt 27 rides along the curved face 17 of the projection, 13, as indicatedin Fig. 2 of the draw-' ings. "When the ,heel part 11 is returned to its norma'l position, as indicated in Fig. 1, the spring 31 will operate to cause the bolt 27.to again enter the hole 28 and the recess 29, and the two parts 10 and 11 will again be locked in position.- This return movement ofthe' heel part 11 to its normal position is assisted by the hollow'spring pressed plug 33, the outer end of which is rounded to press against the front face of the heel part 11, while its opposite openend is inserted in the hole or recess 34 formed in the fore part 10. A spring 35 is mounted in the hollow plug 33 and the hole 34, and as soon as the heel part ll'has been moved sutliciently far to pass the eccentric portion of the projection 13, the operation of the spring 35 will complete the movement of the heel part 11 about the hinge pivot until it has reached its normal position. This makes a very eflective last which is simple in its construction, and has its operating parts all entirely inclosed and protected from any foreign substances which might interfere with their operation. a
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be thoroughly understood without any further description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A last consisting of a fore part and a heel part; a transverse member positioned in the fore part and adapted to oscillate therein; a bolt in the heelpart extending through a vertical slot in the fore part and threaded to said transverse member.
2. A last consisting of a fore partand a heel part; a transverse member positioned in the fore part and adapted to oscillate therein; a bolt in the heel part extendin through a vertical slot in the fore part an threaded to said transverse member; and means preventing the turning of said bolt.
A last consisting of a fore part having a transverse cylindrical opening therethrough and a vertical slot communicating therewith; a cylindrical member positioned in said opening and having a diametrical threaded hole therein; a heel part having a longitlulinal hole therein; and a bolt in the longitudinal hole in said heel part with its threaded end extending therefrom through said vertical slot into the threaded hole of said cylindrical member.
