To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that Enwann S. Davis, a citizen of the United States, andresident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Annealing- Furnaces, of which the following a specific-ation.
My invention relates to improvements in annealing furnaces and particularly, to furnaces for treat-ing small objects such as balls, cartridges, blanks, and other small. parts.
in furnaces for annealing small objects, there is usually employed a conveyer for conveying the objects under treatment from one end of the furnace tofithe other. This conveyer is usually what is known as a 'worm or screw convcyer 1n the shape of a tubular or cylindrical shell having an interi nal screw-thread, the shell being rotated by any suitable means. There is a tendency of the blanks or objects being treated to become lodged or caught in the conveyer while in transit from one end of the furnace to the other.
The principal object of my invention is to prevent the objects under treatment from becoming caught or stuck in the conveyor.
Other objects of the invention are to improve and simplify the construction of the furnace. y
in its preferred form my invention comprises a furnacebody in which there is mounted a rotary screw conveyer for containing the objectsunder treatment and for conveying the objects from one end of the furnace to the other. This 'conveyer may of course be operated by `any suitable means, such as worm and gear connections. The furnace is provided with a burner, preferably an oil or gas burner. The furnace bodyis mounted on a suitable support and for the purpose of preventing the objects from becoming clogged in the conveyer, the furnace is preferably mounted so as to tilt. This mounting of the furnace preferably consists of a hinge joint between the end port-ion of the furnace and the support. The opposite end of the furnace body is provided with dependent supporting legs or members which'serve normally to support the furnace body in a horizontal position.
i Means are provided for elevating the end of the furnace to impart an inclination to the conveyer and this means preferably consists of a dependent rack on the end of the furnace which is engaged by a pinion, the
inion beinO' o )erated b i an i suitable means such a hand-wheel and gear connections. lV hen the hand-wheel or other means is operated, one end of the furnace body will be lifted so as to incline the .furnace and the conveyer therein at an angle to the horizontal. The objects being fed in at the upper end of the conveyer, they will, of their own weight, assist the feeding operation of the conveyor. By lchangingvthe inclination of the coiiveyer the rate or speed of the feeding' operation may be adjusted to suit different conditions.
'In the accompanying drawings is illustrated the preferred embodiment ofthe ,invention but various changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from'the scope of the invention.
