Be it known that l, Lrnonn OSLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of. Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Bilged Metallic Package,
and I do hereby declare the following to be in the art to which it appert-ains to .make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying ures of reference marked thereon, which form a. part of this specification.
My invention relates to metallic packages,
and particularly to the construction of bilged sheet-metal barrels. In the manufacture of packages of this class, it has been customary to longitudinally rib the same, and in order to take up enough metal to give the barrels the proper bilge,.the ribs have been gradually narrowed from their ends inwardly, thus producing the. weakest point at the middle of the package.

The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is susceptible of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the ac.- companying drawings, in which,-

The ribs 11 at opposite ends of the body are arranged to longitudinally register with each other, and the ribs 12 preferably alternate therewith around the body, as shown. The end ribs 11 are of greatest depth at their outer ends and gradually diminish toward the'centcr of the package, preferably dying out or losing themselves in-the pack age body slightly short or its center.
The middle reinforcing ribs 12 are of greatest depth at. the center of the package and gradually diminish outwardly preferably from points which approximately register transversely with the inner ends of the ribs 11 until they lose themselves in the body adjacent its ends. The ribs are of suitable depth and preferably diminish at their ends in such proportion relative to the ribs 11 as to make the barrel body of approximately equal strength throughout its length. The end ribs 11, in addition to re,- inforcing the body are also of suitable depth and sutiiciently tapered to give the body the proper bilge.
The ribs 11 and 12 at the'ends of the package body are rolled flat against the body to form the customary closure receiving portions or chimes at such ends. If it is desired to double-seam the outer edge of a closure with the body edge, as shown at 13, the outer ends of the ribs 12 may be cut away to provide a flange ll for interlocking with the closure edge. The chime is shown in the present instance as being reinforced by a band 15.
It. is evident that I have provided a bilged sheet metal package, which, instead of being of minimum strength at its central portion is, if anything, of greatest strength at such portion. as the middle ribs slanting oil to both sides and being deepest in the middle resisting any pressure from without. l' urthermorc the end ribs. rmming only one way serve toi'give thepackage the proper bilge shape, and also the necessary strength at the package ends, instead of these ribs producing a complete truss construction they form two halves of a truss pulling in opposite directions which, when taken alone, produce a package of weak contra construction, but when combined with central ribs-running in the same direction cooperate tli'erewith to'- produce. a t
package of very great strength at its central portion, where strength is most desired. It is also evident that my construction of bilged package. enables manufacturers to use very much lighter metal in its construction than is possible with any other metallic package of its nature on the market, dueto the peculiar arrangement of ribs which impart great resisting strength to the package.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specificconstruction 0r arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. A bilged metallic package, having alternating sets of central and end ribs,- all run ning longitudinally of the package with both ends of the central 'ribs extending between the inner ends of the contiguous end sets of ribs to' cooperate therewith to strengthen the package throughout its length.
2. A'bilged metallic package, having central and opposite end sets of closely compressed ribs, with both ends of the central ribs lapping the contiguous ends of the end ribs.
3. A bilged metallic packa e having longitudinally-extending and bilging ribs in each end portion thereof and center reinforcing ribs. alternating with at least a portion of the end ribs and extending outwardly at their ends beyond the inner ends of the end ribs.

5. A bilged metallic barrel having its body-comprising a single piece and provided at its ends with longiti1dinal1yextending bilging and reinforcing-ribs, whichter'minate at their inner ends adjacent the barrel center, and provided at its central portion with longitudinally-extending ribs, which are of greatest depth at the barrel center andhave their ends extending betweenv the associated end ribs and gradually diminishing in depth.
