Be it known that l, JOHN E. Year, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arkansas City, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Im proved Boys Wagon, or Which the following is -a specification.

This invention relates to that class of Wagons generally used by boys for coasting and it has for its object to provide a Wagon of the general character stated that can be economicallymade and in which th several parts are especially r .gned so the user to the same and readily control. the direction of the Wagonwhile running, either on. the level or coasting.

My invention also has for its purpose to provide an improved construction of Wagon, of the kind stated, having special provision for holding the user in an upright position standing on one foot Wagon forwardly with the other foot and in such manner that he can support himself While controlling the direction or running.

With other objects in view thatavill hereinafter appear,- my invention comprises the improved construction of boys Wagons hereinafter fully explained, specifically pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Winch:

In the preferred construction, and as best shown in Figs. 3 and 6, the cross bar has a rack 35 for engaging With a cog gear 36 on the tongue 4, the front end of which is swivelly and rotatably joined to the front cross frame 50, that includes the upwardly extended side members 51.-5l pendently secured to the bottom of the agon body. The cog 36 is preferably a corrugated sheet metal plate that is bent around the tongue and is made fast thereto in any approved manner. The front end of the tongue has a ball head 41 for engaging the ball socket 42 in the bracket 43 that consists oftwo half'sections each formed with a half screw shank 44, the two parts being so shaped that When slipped over the ball head 41 the bracket can be readily screwed down through the cross member 50 and secured therein by the lock nut 45.

Fig. 8 illustrates a modified means for connecting the tongue with the running gear and the-same embodies a straight cross bar 34 formed with an aperture 38 centrally of the said bar, and the tongue has a pendent rod, 48 that slips down through the said aperture. In this latter form the rod 48 acts as a crank memberfor shifting the bar when the tongue is rotated. By reason i and swingable back over the body, means of connecting the tongue to the wagon body, as shown, and providing the said body with a central longitudinal slot it is obvious a true guide for the tongue when it is swung back, is provided, since the fore part'of the said tongue rests within the said slot, thus keeping the handle head in the central line of the wagon and in a convenient position for grasping, the side walls of the wagon body slot serving to brace the said tongue and thereby giving the boy a firm hearing or support for his body while manipulatingthe said tongue to steer the wagon. By providing the tongue with a cog gear for the same while turning the tongue in its ball and socket joint engages the rack on the bar 3 1- and thereby renders the steering operation, not alone positive and easy, but provides a substantial brace or support for the user, it being apparent that a slight rotation ofthe tongue in either direction will carry both of the front wheels to the directions desired.

While I have shown and described but a single modification of the preferred construction, it obvious other modifications and variations of the said preferred constructions may be made without departing from my invention or the scopeof the appended claims.

What I claim is 1. In a boys wagon, a wheeled body including a free front short turn gear, a draft tongue connected to the front of the body and swingable back over the body, and means for opcratively connecting said tongue with said short turn gear when said tongue is brought back over the body.

2. In a boys wagon, a wheeled body including a free front short turn gear, a draft tongue connected to the front of the body for operatively connecting said tongue with said short turn gear when said tongue is brought back over the body, said body having a recess to receive and brace said tongue when swung back over the body.

3. In a boys wagon, a wheeled body in cluding a free front short turn gear, a draft tongue connected to thefront of the body and swingable back over the body, means for op'eratively connecting said tongue with said short turn gear when said tongue is brought back over the body, and a rear step on said body adjacent to which said tongue is adapted to project to'be grasped by the operator.

4. In a boys wagon, a wheeled body including a front short turn gear, a draft tongue connected to the front of the body and swingable back over the body, means for operatively connecting said tongue with said short turn gear when said tongue is brought back over the body, said body having a recess to receive and brace said tongue when swung back over the body, and a rear step on said body adjacent to which said tongue is adapted to project to be grasped by the operator.

5. In a boys wagon, a wheeled body including a free front short turn gear, a draft tongue connected to the front of the body and swingable back over the body, means for operatively connecting said tongue with said short turn gear when said tongue is brought back over the body, said operative connection between said. tongue and said short turn gear including means carried by said tongue for turning said short turn gear as said tongue is bodily rotated.

6. In a boys wagon, a wheeled body including a front short turn gear, a draft tongue connected to the front of the body and swingable back over the body, means for operatively connecting said tongue with said short turn gear when said tongue is brought back over the body, said body hav-. ing a recessto receive and brace said tongue when swung back over the body, a rear step on said body adjacent. to which said tongue is adapted to project to be grasped by the operator, said operative connection between said tongue and said short turn gear ing said short turn gear as said tongue is bodily rotated.

7. A wagon having a pendent platform at the rear end and a free running gear at the front end, a tongue having a hinged connection with the said body whereby it can be extended backwardly over the wagon body, means on the said wagon body for.

9. In a wagon having a free steering wheel at the front end and a rotatable tongue hinged to the wagon body, and connections for joining the steering wheel and the tongue for controlling the movement of the steering wheel as the tongue is rotated.

10. In a boys coasting wagon, a body having a pendent platform at the rear end, and a longitudinal slot in. the front end ofthe body, fixedly supported rear wheels for the body, a caster wheel at each front corner of the body, a member connecting the two caster includ' ing means carried by said tongue for turn- Wheels to cause them to move in unison, said member having a rack face and a tongue member rotatably mounted in the slotted Y to turn together, a relatively fixed bracket bottom, said member having a cog surface for engaging the rack on the caster Wheel connecting bar whereby to oscillate the said bar as the tongue is rotated.
