Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND S. PARSLOW, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid- Coating Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a class of devices wherein a receptacle is employed for holding liquid blacking, mucilage, or other substances in an aqueous form and which may be automatically distributed or spread therefrom in coating an article.
My invention has for its primary object to provide a compact, inexpensive and efficient device adapted mainly to be utilized for blacking boots, shoes, etc., though said device may be used for coating or spreading other liquid substances upon articles of various classes; and to provide a handle in the form of a container or receptacle in which is placed the liquid blacking or liquid substance which is automatically fed in a desired quantity to a dauber or brush when the device is in use, thereby preventing the manipulator thereof from soiling the hands and saving all waste of the liquid.
Another object of the invention is to provide a form of means or a flexible element adapted to suctionally draw the liquid from the receptacle and transmit the same to the dauber or brush when the device is in use, and the invention has still for another object to provide a form of means or clip by which the dauber or brush may be connected to the yielding element.
A further object of the invention is to provide two caps, one of which may be fitted upon one end of the receptacle and the other cap fitted upon the opposite end thereof to inclose the dauber so that the device may be conveniently packed in case of traveling.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views; the said invention being more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a section,
partly in elevation of one form of liquid distributing device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the clip, the yielding element and the end of the re ceptacle, and Fig. 3 is a detail view, partly in section, of the parts shown in Fig. 2 when assembled.
The device 10 has a handle 11 which is preferably tubular in form so that said device may be conveniently manipulated when in practice similar to using an ordinary paint brush. The tubular handle 11 serves as a container or receptacle 12 for the liquid blacking or other liquid substance, as 13, which is poured in said receptacle through the opening or mouth 14 at one end thereof, and said mouth may be closed by any suitable means, for instance by a stopper, as 14 The opposite end of the tubular receptacle 12 is tapered, as at 15 and may be provided with annular ringsor is peripherally corrugated, as at 16, and the apex of the tapered end 15 is apertured so as to provide an outlet 17 for the liquid 13.
Over the tapered end 15 of the receptacle 12 is passed the cone-shaped portion 18 of a flexible element or nipple 19. The flexible element 19 is tubular in form and is made preferably of rubber or other elastic material. When the flexible tubular element 19 is connected to the receptacle 12 the elasticity thereof will cause the cone-shaped portion 18 to tightly engage the peripheral corrugations 16 of the tapered end 15 so that said parts will be held against displacement, and projecting from the reduced end of the cone-shaped portion 18 is a short tube 20 which is adapted to receive the tubular portion or neck 21 of a clip 22 to connect the same to said cone-shaped portion.
The tubular neck 21 may be formed to provide exteriorly thereof annular corrugations or a plurality of spaced apart bulblike peripheral rings, as 23, so that the short tube 20 will be firmly held upon said tubular neck. Upon one end of the tubular neck 21 is a head 24 which may be formed integrally or made separately and connected to said neck. The head 24: is substantially cupshaped and has a throat or opening 25, Fig. 1, which communicates with the passage through the tubular neck 21. A plurality of fingers or prongs 26 are formed upon the cup-shaped head 24 and are disposed in an opposite direction from the tubular neck 21. The fingers or prongs 26 are made of material adapted to have the ends thereof bent or curved inwardly with relation to each other, as indicated by dotted lines 27, so as to grip a dauber or brush 28 when fastened thereby to the clip 22. The dauber or brush 28 may be made of any suitable absorbing or porous material so as to permit the liquid 13 to pass theret-hrough for coating an article. In operating the device 10 the handle 11 of the tubular receptacle 12 is grasped between the fingers of a person and is manipulated similarly to the manner of spreading paint by use of a brush. By this movement of the device 10 the tubular flexible element will yield suificiently to cause the liquid 13 to be suctionally drawn from the receptacle 12 into the passage of the neck 21, and through the mouth 25 of the clip 22, and Will be absorbed and passed through the dauber 2.7 by Which said liquid is spread or coated upon the article. In order to permit the device 10 to be properly packed for transportation over the mouth 14 may be fitted a suitable cap 29, and over the tapered end 15 of the receptacle 12 may be passed the end of a cap 30 Which is adapted to inclose said tapered end, also the tubular flexible element 19, the clip 22, and dauber 28.
In the foregoing description I have embodied the preferred form of my invention,
but I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make changes in the form and proportions of the parts of my liquid coating device as fairly fall Within the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a liquid coating device in combination, a tubular handle of rigid material, a tapered end portion formed on said tubular handle, corrugations formed upon said tapered end portion, a flexible tapered member cooperating with said tapered end portion, a tubular neck of rigid material, bulb like peripheral rings formed upon said tubular neck and adapted to cooperate with said flexible member, a head port-ion formed on said tubular neck, tapered prongs formed in said head portion, an absorbent member adapted to be held in position on said head by means of said tapered prongs, substantially as described.
