BAND-IRON TIGHTENER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. HORNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Iron Tighteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in band iron tighteners and the object of my invention is to provide a device for use in applying metal bands to packing boxes, which will hold the band taut while being secured to the box. And a further object is to provide a band tightener adapted to be operated by the foot of the packer whereby his hands will be free for securing the band.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists primarily in a treadle provided with spaced apart slots through which the metal band is threaded, said treadle being pivotally secured at one end to a suitable base.
Referring to the drawings which show a preferred embodiment of my device and in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, Figure 1 is a plan view showing a set of band tighteners in operation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the tension upon the band released. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device in operative position. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the treadle itself.
As shown in the drawings my improved device consists of a suitable supporting base 1 preferably made of wood to which the band tightening device which as a whole will be designated by the numeral 3 is pivotally secured. Reels of band metal are conventionally shown at 2.
The band tightener itself consists of the treadle plate 1 slotted at one end as at 5 to provide the outwardly extending ears 6, the other end of said plate being provided with a transverse slot 7. This plate is secured to the base by means of a rod 8 about which are curled the end portions of the ears 6. The ends of this rod 8 are bent downwardly adjacent the sides of the plate 4: to form members 9 the ends of said members being beveled as at 10 to adapt them to be driven into the base 1, whereby the treadle is pivotally secured to said base.
In operation the end of the band is passed between the rod 8 and the support 1 then upwardly through the slot 5 and downwardly through the .slot 7 when the device is ready for use. The end of the band is then secured to the box to which it is to be bound, and it will be seen that when the foot of the operator is placed upon the treadle the band will be drawn taut, partially because of the band being threaded through the slots and partially because of the engagement of a portion of the band between the treadle and the foot of the op erator.
In the drawings I have illustrated two.
of these tighteners being used together for applying a band to either end of the box, but it will be understood that as many tighteners may be used as there are bands desired for the box, thus saving the continual rehandling of the box, or if preferred the banding may be carried out with the use of but one tightener.
It will be seen from the above that I have provided a band tightener simple and economical in construction and which may be wholly operated by the foot of the packer leaving his hands free.
If desired the band reel may be secured upon the rear end of the base or mounted in a rack instead of being secured to the floor as shown, or the base may be done away with entirely and the tightener may be secured directly to the floor without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention.
