RAZOR-STBOPPING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 14, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERRY J. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Razor-stropping Devices, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in razor stropping devices and the object of my improvement is to simplify the construction and increase the efficiency of the device, and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts as shown in this specification and the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the razor strop ready for use; and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a lengthwise sectional view of the razor holding portion of the oscillating frame showing the spring. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the oscillating frame removed from the main frame. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the stropping device without the strop and with a razor blade in' position therein for stropping. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the razor stropping device at line X X in Fig. 5, showing the parts in normal position ready for the insertion of the razor; and Fig. 7 is a similar sectional view showing the razor blade inserted in its holder and oscillatively turned against the strop by the pulling of said strop, the movement of the oscillating frame beingshown in dotted line. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the sheet metal frame as struck out by the dies before bending into shape to receive the oscillating frame.
Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the sheet metal frame of the stropping device which is preferably struck from the sheet metal in one piece, as shown in Fig. 8, after which it is bent into the U-shape with the arms 11. Each of the arms 11 has an opening 12 therein to reduce the weight and permit of the insertion of the razor blade 13 in the razor holder 14 between the sides of the strop 15. A ring 16 is attached to a stud 17 which stud is pivotally mounted midway of the length of the back piece or connecting portion of plate 10 for arms 11. The ring 16 is convenient for engaging a hook or staple. The arms 11 are connected at their lower ends by the central shaft 18 and the side shafts 19. Each of the shafts 18 and 19 has a sleeve or roller revolubly mounted thereon to aid in the free movement of the strop 15. The shafts 18 and 19 and the strong back portion of the steel plate 10 render the frame exceedingly rigid.
A reciprocating or oscillating frame 20 is pivotally mounted on central shaft 18. The frame 20 consists of a sheet metal plate formed in its central portion into a clamp or holder 14 for the razor blade 13, and the ends 21 are bent downward from each end of the holder 14 and extend out to each side of the same and fitting within the arms 11. Each of the ends 21 of the frame 20 has pivotally attached thereto the links 22, that is, two links to each end, one at each side of the roller and shaft 18. The other ends of the four links 22 are connected by shafts 23 with rollers revolubly mounted thereon to receive the strop and aid in the easy running of the same. The rods or pins 23 eX- tend outside of the links 22 and are flattened on each side to slidably engage in the slots 24 in the arms 11 of frame 10 at each side. This arrangement of the rods 23 permits of a limited oscillating movement for frame 20, which movement is sufficient to permit of the reciprocating of the razor blade 13 against the opposite inner sides of the strop 15, as shown in Fig. 7.
The razor holder 14 consists of the two clamping sides 25 which are bent from the spring sheet steel plate so that when the razor blade 13 is pressed through between them, they clamp the blade 13 firmly, holding it rigidly in place as it is oscillatively moved backward and forward against the strop. To further aid in holding the razor blade 13 in place against the sides 25 a leaf spring 26 is attached at one end to the bottom of the sheet metal clamp 14 and through its centralportion bends upwardly toward the mouth of said clamping sides 25 and has its free end 27 turned at an angle to hold against the end of the razor and prevent its slipping through the holder 14 end wise and thus get out of place during the operation of stropping the razor edge.
The strop 15 extends up between the rollers 18 and 19 and around the roller on the pin 23 at one side of the oscillative frame, then back around the roller upon pin 18 and thence around the other roller on the opposite pin 28 and thence back and Within the roller on'the other pin 19. This arrangement of the strop holds it firmly in line and braces the strop against the hollowing side of the blade 13.
In using the razor stropping device it is supported on a suitable hook by ring 16. First one end ;of the strop 15 and then the other is pulled,: thereby turning the hinged frame 20 first to one side and-then to the other, pressing the blade 13- against the strop 15. The links 22 hold the rollers and pins 23 firmly in line as they slide back andforth within the slots 24 in each side of the arms 11.
The short return c bends of the leather strop 15 give a strong pressure of the strop against the side ofthe blade 13 and in consequence insure a. true stropping efiect on the razor blade 13 at the bevel at which it is ground. It also gives a strong, true pressure ofthe razor blade 13 against the strop 15 first on one side of the blade and then on the other as the strop is drawn over the rollers in the opposite directions. The pivotal connection of the rollers upon the pins 23 by means of the links 22 to the oscillative frame 20 insures a quick positive stroke for the strop 15, thereby giving, a keen. edge to the razor in the shortest possible time. The
link connection for the rollers in theoscillating frame insures a positive motion to the construction. which permits of the manual control of the pressure of ,thestrop on the razor blade so that it may be stropped either light or heavy as desired.
' I claim as new:
1. In a device ofgthec class described, a supporting frame,an oscillating frame pivotally mounted in said supporting frame, said-oscillating frame comprising a razor holder and two movable rollers and'link connection between said-rollers and razor holder, and a razor strop.
2. In a device of the class described, a supporting frame having slots therein, rollers movably mounted in said slots, a fixed shaft in said frame, a roller on said fixed shaft, an oscillating frame pivotally mounted on said fixed shaft, a razor holder on said oscillating frame, link connection between said oscillating frame and said movable rollers, and a razor strop to pass back and forth over said rollers.

, 4- In a device of the class described, a U-shaped supporting frame, the arms of said frame having openings therein, three crosssshafts connectingv the ends of the arms of said U-shaped frame and rollers revolubly mounted on .said cross shafts, a frame pivotally mounted on the central cross shaft in said supporting frame, rollers revolubly mounted in said pivotally mounted frame and slidable in said U- shaped frame, link-connection between said slidably mounted rollers and said pivotally mounted frame at each side of thesame,.and a strop passing between two of the rollers on said U-shaped frameand thence around one of said slidably mounted rollers in said pivotally mounted frame thence around the central roller in said U-shaped frame thence around the otherislidably mounted roller in said pivotally mounted frame and thence back between two of the rollers on said U-shaped frame,substantially as and for the purpose specified:
