SHUTTER-SLAT OPERATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1'7, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danbury, in the county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter-Slat Operators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to shutter slat workers, the object of the invention being to provide an extremely cheap and simple article that may be applied to the common type of pivoted slat shutters including two series of pivoted slats, which may be operated to open both series of slats simultaneously or to close them and lock them in closed position.
In the drawings'forming a portion of the specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of shutters equipped with the present invention, one of the shutters having its slats in open position while the other shutter has its slats in closed position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the structure shown in Fig. 1 in a plane between the meeting edges of the shutters and looking to the left. Fig. 3, a detail perspective view of the twoarm lever which is pivoted to the shutter and adapted in its movements to open and close the slats of the shutter to which it is operatively connected.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates a window frame to which is hinged a pair of shutters l1 and 12 in the usual and well known manner. Each of the shutters 11 and 12 is provided with a pair of vertically alined series of pivoted slats l3 and 14, all of the slats 13 being connected centrally of their outer edges to a vertical rod 15 while the slats 14 are correspondingly connected to a vertical rod 16. By the movement of the rods 15 and 16 up and down in a vertical direction it will be apparent that the slats 13 and 14 respectively may be opened or closed. The lower end of the rod 15 is forked as at 17, while the upper end of the rod 16 is correspondingly forked as at 18. Pivoted to each of the shutters 11 and 12 be tween the slats 13 and 141 is a lever A provided with oppositely extending arms 19 and 20. The lower end of the rod 15 is secured to the arm 20 of the lever A by means of a connection 21 which is suitably fastened between the arms of the forked end of said rod and is provided with a loop 22 passing through an opening in the outer end of the arm 20. The upper end of the rod 16 is likewise secured to the arm 20 by means of a connection 23 suitably fastened between the arms of the forked end of said rod and provided with a loop 24: passing through the same opening in the arm 20 as the loop 22. An operating rod 25 has its upper end secured to the arm 19 and its lower end provided with a loop 26; said operating rod passing through suitable guides 27 secured to the shutters 11 and 12 in vertical alinement. A pin 28 projects from each of the shutters 11 and 12 and is adapted to be engaged by the loop 26 to positively lock the slats 13 and 14 in closed position as will be apparent.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a shutter having separate series of pivoted slats and an intervening unslatted portion, of a rocker pivoted at the unslatted portion and extending with one end between the series of slats and the opposite end beyond the series of slats, a pair of rods connected to the first named end of the rocker and each to the slats of one series for actuating them, an operating rod pivoted to the opposite end of the rocker beyond the series of slats and having an eye at its opposite end, and a pin carried by the shutter in position to engage said eye and hold the rod and rocker with the slats in closed positions.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS THOMPSON.
Witnesses 1 FREDRIOK E. SMITH, HOWARD H. WOODMAN.
