To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, BARRY Ivon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Im- PFOVGIIlBIltS in Stamp-Afhxing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a stamp aflixing machine, and while it is more especially intended for aflixing postage stamps to envelops or mailing cards, yet it is applicable for clipping off and affixing adhesive labels and the like and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine for clipping stamps or labels from a roll and aflixing them to envelops, cards and the like, which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, strong, durable and effective in operation and so made that the envelop or card may be moistened and the stamp or label clipped off and pressed on the envelop or card by a single movement of an operating lever.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which l Figure 1, is a front view in elevation of a stamp affixing machine embodying the invention, showing a portion of the base of the frame thereof broken away for the convenie'nce of illustration, and illustrating the parts in their normal positions; Fig. 2, is a view partly in section and partly in elevation taken on line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows; and Fig. 3, is a similar view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the directions indicated by the arrows, but showing the parts in a different position from that illustrated in Figs. 1, and 2.
Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the different views of the drawings. 7
The reference numeral 7, designates the base or bedplate of the main or supporting frame which may have at each of its corners a leg 8, to support the same. Mounted on the bed-plate 7, is an upright frame 9, which together with the bed-plate, comprises the supporting frame. Horizontally journaled on the upper portion of the frame 9, is a driving shaft 10, which has mounted on one of its ends a pinion 11, which meshes with a gear 12, journaled on the upright portion of one of the sides of the main frame. This gear 12, is provided with a number of projections 13, which extend outwardly as shown, and are for the purpose of engaging an arm 14:, which is pivotally secured at one of its ends to a projection 15, on one side of the operating lever 16, which is loosely mounted on the shaft 17, of the gear 12.
Transversally located on the lever 16, near the projection 15, thereon, is a screw 18, which is extended rearwardly of the arm 14:, and restricts its rearward movement.
Mounted on the opposite end of the shaft 10, from that on which the pinion 11, is mounted, is a beveled gear 19, which meshes with a similar gear 20, mounted on the upper end of the shaft 21, which is vertically journaled on the main frame and at one side thereof. Mounted on the lower portion of the shaft 21, is a cam 22, which is adapted to engage a head 23, on one end of a moistener rod 2 1, which is mounted for reciprocal movement on the lower portion of the frame and is provided on its end adjacent to the stamp cutter and presser with a holder 25, for a sponge 26, or other moistening device which may be secured on the lower portion of the holder 25, in any suitable manner. Surrounding the rod 24:, between its head 23, and a portion 27, of the frame, is a coiled spring 28, which will retract the moistener after it has been advanced by the cam 22, which coaots with the head 23, of the moistener rod.
Mounted on the rear portion of the bedplate 7, and near the middle part thereof, is a casing 29, which may have on one of its sides a hinged door 30, to open and close the same. As shown, the front part of the casing 29, extends some distance above the bedplate and is provided at its front end with two guide members 31, and 32, which are located a slight distance apart so as to permit of the stamps 33, being passed therebetween. The stamps 33, are shown in a ribbon-like roll 34, mounted on a reel 35, journaled in the casing 29, and as bein passed between two feed rollers 36, and 3 which are mounted on shafts 38, and 39, respectively, and which shafts are journaled in the front portion of said casing. Mounted on one end of the shaft 38, is a gear 40, which meshes with a gear 41, mounted on the shaft 39, near one of its ends. Also mounted on the shaft 39, near the gear 41, is another gear 42, which meshes with a gear 43,. mounted on the outer portion of the shaft 44, on which the reel 35, is mounted. The gear 43, has on its outer surface a ratchet wheel 45, the teeth 46, of which are adapted to be engaged by a pawl 47, which is pivotally mounted on a lever 48, which is connected at one of its ends to one end of a rod 49, the other end of which is connected to a band 50, encircling an eccentric 51, mounted on the driving shaft 10, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, of the drawings.
Mounted on the driving shaft 10, at one side of the eccentric 51, and above the front portion of the casing 29, is an eccentric 52, which is inclosed by a yoke-frame 53, which has at each of its ends a vertical guideway 54, for the reception and operation of heads 55, on the lower ends of rods 56, which are extended through the upper hori- Zontal portion of the frame 9, and furnish guiding supports for the yoke-frame 53, which carries the stamp presser as will be presently explained.
Surrounding each of the rods 56, within the guideways 54, is a spring 57 one end of which rests against the head 55, of each rod and the other end rests against the upper portion of said guideway. The upper portion of the frame 53, is provided with an extension 58, which projects through a suit able opening in the upper part of the main frame 9, and the lower part of the yokeframe 53, is provided with a downward eX tension 59, the lower end of which is provided with a socket 60, to receive a projection 61, on the upper portion of the presser plate 62, for the stamps, which plate is movably held on the extension 59, by means of bolts 63, which are loosely extended through suitable openings in horizontal extensions 64, on the lower portion of the extension 59. Located in the socket 60, is a coiled spring 65, which rests at one of its ends against the upper end of said socket and at its other end against the extension 61, on the presser plate, which plate is provided on its portion adjacent to the guide member 31, with. a knife 66, for the purpose of clipping the stamps as they are passed out in tape or ribbon-like form between the guide members 31, and 32, and by means of the feed rollers 36, and 37, which are mounted within the casing-29, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3, of the drawings.
From the foregoing and by reference to the drawings, it will be readily understood and clearly seen that by moving the lever 16, forwardly or toward the operator, the pivoted arm 14, pressed by the screw 18, will engage one of the projections 13, on the gear 12, in which operation said gear will be rotated until the projection 13, 1n engagement with the arm 14, is released therefrom, when it is apparent that the lever 16, may be turned backwardly in which action the arm 14, will pass over the nearest or adjacent projection and be in position to engage the same when the lever 16, is again moved forwardly. In each of the forward movements of the lever 16, it is apparent that the driving shaft 10, will be rotated and through the gearing therewith, the cam 22, will be caused to operate against the head 23, of the moistener rod, thus causing said rod to advance over a portion of the envelop 67, and moisten said portion, for
it will be understood that the frame may I be provided with a suitable basin 68, at a proper point for water, which may be absorbed by the sponge 26, or moistening device. In the rotation of the driving shaft, it is evident that the yoke-frame 53, carrying the stamp presser 62 will be raised and lowered through the medium of the eccentric 52, coacting with said frame, and that as the ribbon 33, of stamps is fed be tween the guide members 31, and 32, the knife 66, on the stamp presser will clip the stamps elf and allow them to be pressed against the moistened portions of the envelops, where they will adhere.
The operation of feeding the stamp ribbon or tape, is performed through the instrumentality of the connections which unite the band-eccentric 51, on the driving shaft with the feed rollers and the shaft on which the roll of stamps is mounted.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is- 1. In a stamp afiixing machine, the combination with the supporting frame, of a driving shaft horizontally journaled thereon and having on one of its ends a pinion, a gear mounted on the frame in mesh with said pinion and having a series of projections on one of its faces, a lever fulcrumed at one of its ends and having an inward projection between its ends, an arm pivoted at one of its ends to said projection, a screw mounted on the lever to contact with the rear surface of said pivoted arm, a stamp carrier mounted on the frame, feeding rollers for the stamps, intermeshing gears on the shafts of said rollers, and means oper atively connecting said gears to the driving shaft and the shaft of the stamp carrier, a reciprocatory presser for the stamps, and means operatively connecting said presser to the driving shaft.

In a stamp aflixing machine, the combination with the supporting frame, of a driving shaft journaled thereon, means to rotate said shaft, a stamp-dispensing reel journaled adjacent to the bed-plate of the portion of the yoke-fran1e, a spring cushframe, feed-rollers journaled in front of ioned resser plate movably mounted on the 10 said reel, means connecting said rollers and lower portion of said extension, and a knife the driving shaft to operate said rollers, an eccentric mounted on the driving shaft, a yoke-frame mounted for vertical movement on the supporting frame and surrounding said eccentric and extension on the lower on one edge of said plate.
