Specification of Letters Patent.

Be' it known that I, ALBERT C. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary-Pump Casings for Auto Fire Ap aratus, of which the following is a specific ion.
This ven ion relates to rotary pumps, and moje pa ticularly to pumps of the specified ltype-. designed for attachment to the frame. 0 a fire engine.
It comprehends primarily an improved double rotary pump which is adapted tolbe mounted upon the chassis of a motor vehicle and to be driven from the motor or engine, when the vehicle is stationary, through the medium of suitable connecting devices, the improvements in question concerning, especially, the construction of the casing wherein the rotary pistons are disposed, and the mounting of the shafts t which said pistons are secured.
A structural embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, whereof:

Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively, side and end elevations of the pump case. Fig. 7 is a face view of one of the heads of the pump case. Fig. 8 is a face view of one of the gland caps or nuts which are adapted to be fitted on the throats formed on said heads. 'As shown in said drawings, the pump consists, preferably, of the following essential parts, viz the case, indicated in a general manner by the reference character A,
the pumping mechanism B located interiorly of said case and comprising the rotary pistons and the shafts on which the same are mounted, (these elements being hereinafter described in detail), and the two bearing brackets C and C wherein the ends of the afore-mentioned shafts are j ournaled.
The pump case A comprises a base portion 1 adapted to rest securely upon the chassis, (not shown) of the vehicle, from which portion, adjacent the ends thereof, rises a pair of vertical walls 2 that are joined, in turn, to, short top' walls 3, the walls last referred to being integrally connected to a pair of oppositely curved walls 4 that extend directly over and under the.
rotating pistons. In addition to the parts specified, the case includesthe vertical side walls 6, and, also, the two heads 7 the former being provided with elliptical openings 8 of the same curvature as\ the walls .4, which openings are closed by the elliptical heads 7 their edges to the elliptical flanges-43 that are formed on the heads and border the openings 8. I
In the end walls 2 of the case are formed threaded inlet openings 9 which receive the inner ends of the supply pipes, (not shown), said pipes being adapted for connection at their outer ends to fire-plugs, or the like,
as will be understood. The water entering the case by way of these pipes is drawn up into the interior of the pump chamber Said heads are bolted adjacent proper 10, which is defined by the curved walls 4 and the heads 7, by the actionof the pumping mechanism B, and is expelled through the constrictedneck 11 produced by the upward extensions 12 formed on the aforesaid walls into the air chamber 13 whose lower or inlet end rests upon and is secured to the flanged upper end of. saidneck. On passing through the air chamber the water is discharged through openings 14 in the upper end thereof, which openings are designed to receive the inner endsof the hose sections, (not shown). lower ends of the curved walls 4 are spaced apart to produce the opening or passage 15 leading into chamber 10.
The pump mechanism B consists, as already stated, of the two rotary pistons The 16 and the shafts 23 upon which the same are keyed. Each of said pistons consists of a cylindrical body portion 17 and a series of blades 18 extending radially therefrom, cer
tain of the blades, .in the present instance every other blade, being formed with longitudinal slots 19 which extend from end to end thereof and open through said ends and through the faces of the blades. These slots are designed to receive packing members 20 provided upon one face with longitudinal ribs 21 which work in grooves 22 formed in the adjacent walls of the slots, the width of the grooves being somewhat greater than that of they ribs so as to allow a slight outward movement of the packing members under the centrifugal force exerted thereon when the pistons are in motion. The blades themselves may have any suitable cross sectional shape, preferably that of involute teeth, as shown, the blades of one piston being arranged sufficiently close to those of the other piston to enable the two sets to intermesh.
The heads 7 of the case are each formed with a pair of openings 24 through which the adjacent ends of the shafts 23 extend, these openings being encircled by laterallyprojecting annular collars or throats 25 constructed integral with the heads, the diameter of said throats being, however, slightly greater than that of the openings. The projecting end portions of the shafts 23 are provided with bushing sleeves 26 which are tightly fitted thereon and are encircled by metal packing glands 27 disposed within the throats 25 and held in place by caps or nuts 28. Said nuts are threaded upon the outer ends of the collars, and are formed with peripheral notches 29 adapted to receive suitable keys, (not shown), by means whereof the nuts are locked in place. The walls of the openings 24 are formed with circumferential oil passages 30 having filling ducts 31 leading thereinto, said ducts being preferably located at the junction of the throats 25 with the heads 7.
The. afore-mentioned nuts 28, are :provided with axial openings through which shafts 23 extend, and the front and rear terminals of said shafts have fitted thereon the inner race members 32 and 33 of the front and rear anti-friction bearings carried by the brackets O and C. Between said nner race members and. the correspondlng outer members 34 and 35, are interposed series of balls 36 and 37, the said races being disposed in" circular seats 38 and 39 formed in the outer faces of the body portions 40, of the aforesaid brackets. In
addition to-its above-mentioned body port1on, each bracket comprises a series of horizontal legs 41 which extend laterally inward from the periphery thereof and are formed with terminal feet 42 that are bolted to the adjacent head 7. The seats 38 and 39 are disposed coaxially with the piston shafts, and, also, with shaft openings formed through bosses 44 on the inner.
faces of the bracket bodies, which bosses are provided with oil grooves 45 and filhng ducts 46 similar to those already described.
The shafts extend through the various seats and openings, as depicted in Flg. 4, and the projecting front portions thereof are provided with rings or sleeves 47 that are interposed between and in contact with the inner race members 32 and the intermeshin gears 48, the latter being likewise fitte upon the aforesaid projecting portions of the shafts, one of which shafts is adapted to be driven from the clutch shaft of the I motor by means of suitable gearing, (not shown).
To close the seats 38 and 39 and protect the anti-friction bearings from dust and dirt, front and rear pairs of shields 49 and 50 are provided. These shields are secured to the body portions of the. corresponding brackets C and C and the front shields encircle the rings 47 and are formed with oil grooves 51 and filling ducts 52'. The rear shields 50 have hollow hemispherical bosses 53 formed centrally there-1 of, these bosses inclosing thrust-plates 54 that are connected to the rear terminals of the piston shafts 23 by keys 55 and screws or short bolts 56, the inturned peripheral edges of said plates extending into contact with the inner race members 33. The ends of the bushings or sleeves 26 fitted on the aforesaid piston shafts act as shoulders, as
will be understood, theinner shoulders engaging the opposite end faces of the piston bodies, while the outer shoulders engage the inner faces of the inner race members 32 and 33, the outer faces of which race'members are engaged by .the rings 47 and the thrust-plates 54, and, therefore, held in place. v j
The operation of the pump is believed to be apparent from the foregoing, and to require no extended description. It is suflicient to state, therefore, that the water en-' tering the interior of the pump case by way' of the supply pipes and the openings 9, is drawn by the action of the rotating pistons 16 into the chamber 10 through the opening or passage 15, and is expelled therefrom through the neck 11 into the air chamber 13 of the pump, whence it flows through the. discharge 0 enings 14 into the hose sections. The pump is preferably located beneath the front seat of the car, being so proportioned as to admit of such disposition.
What is claimed is:
1. A pump comprising, in combination,- a- 3 case consisting of connected side, end, top".

A rotary pump comprising, in combination, a case provided w1th a pair of inlet 0 "enings; a chamber arranged interiorly 0 said case and comprising a pair of oppositely curved walls having their respective upper and lower walls spaced apart to produce inlet and outlet passages; a pair of parallel shafts extending through said chamber and case a pair of pistons mount. t
ed .on said shafts wi in said chamber and consisting each of a cylindrical body portion and a series of blades extending radially therefrom, the blades of each piston engaging those of the-other piston and certain of the. blades of each piston being formed with longitudinal slots having 1ongitudinal grooves formed on the walls there- 'of; packing strips fitted in said'slots, said strips being formed with longitudinal ribs received in said grooves; and means for rotating said shaft in unison, the' width of of saidgrooves, whereby said strips will be said ribs being appreciably less than that free to move outwardly insaid slots under the centrifugal force exerted thereon when the pistons are in motion.

means for rotating said shafts; and a pair of brackets disposed upon opposite sides of said case, each bracket comprising a body portion provided with a'pair of seats, and a series of horizontal legs projecting from said body portion and connected at their free ends to the adjacent head, said'seats having anti-friction bearings fitted therein in which the ends of said shafts are journaled.
