To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. MCCARTHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Roofs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to car roofs, and has to do particularly with roofs in which a sheet-metal roof is employed underneath an outer wooden roof.
It has for its object to provide certain improvements in the construction of the rooting-sheets and their arrangement in connection with the other parts of the roof. I accomplish this object as illustrated in the drawings and as hereinafter described.

12 indicates the wooden roof, which is composed of boards secured upon the upper purlins 11 and ridgepole 6.
13 indicates the roofing-sheets, the construction of which is best shown in Figs. 2 and 3. As therein shown, each of the sheets is provided at one edge with an inverted U-shaped flange 14 and at the other edge with an upturned flange 15, which fits within the U-shaped flange 14C of the adjacent edge, thus forming an interlocking joint which is protected from moisture but which does not interfere with the move- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

roofing-sheets are provided with upturned flanges 17. The inner ends of the roofingsheets are fitted into recesses 18 at the sides of the ridgepole so that they are protected from moisture by the overlying portion of the ridgepole, as shown in Fig. 1. The roofing-plates are supported intermediately by the purlinsl() and at their outer ends by the side-plates 7. They project slightly beyond the siding 9, as shown in Fig. 1, so that any water which falls upon the roofingsheets is discharged at the sides of the car.
19 indicates joint-strips in the form of wooden strips, which extend transversely of the car over the joints connecting the side edges of the rooting-sheets, said joint-strips having grooves 20 on their under surfaces which overlie the joints, as best shown in Fig. 2. At their inner ends the corners of the joint-strips are cut away, as shown at 21-22 in Fig. 2, to receive the flanges 17 of the roofing-sheets and provide sutlicient space so that the movement of the rootingsheets under the wrenching strains of the car is not interfered with. At the same time through the engagement of the flanges 17 with the inner ends of the joint-strips eX- cessive outward movement of the roofingsheets is prevented. By cutting away the corners of the inner or Lipper ends of the joint-strips as above described I form a tongue 19a which projects beyond the flanges 17 of the roofing sheets and abuts against the ridgepole so that the joint-strips are thus held rigidly against longitudinal movement without preventing such inward movement of the rooting-sheets as may be necessary as to allow them to accommodate themselves to the wrenching strains to which the roof is subjected. `At their outer ends the jointstrips 19 are secured by nails or screws 23, which connect them with the side-plates 7 8. Said nails do not pass through the roofingsheets, but through the spaces 16 formed by cutting away the corners of the sheets, as shown in Fig. 2. The joint-strips 19 extend out beyond the outer ends of the rootingsheets, as shown in Fig. 1, and serve to hold the outer ends of the roofing-sheets down, thus making it unnecessary to employ clips or blocks for that purpose. 211 indicates the fascia-boards which abut against the outer ends of the j oint-strips 19 and are secured to the side-plates 7 8, preferably by bolts 25, as shown in Fig. 1. That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
l. In a car-roof, the combination with suitable supporting devices, of a plurality of roofing-sheets joined together at their side edges, side-plates supporting the outer or eave ends of the roofing-sheets, the cornersV of the rooting-sheets overlying the sideplates being cut away, joint-strips overlying the side edges of the roofing-sheets and the cut away corner port-ions thereof, and means securingl said joint-strips to the side-plates at the spaces formed by cutting away the corners Vof the roofing-sheets.
' 2. In a car-roof, .the combination with suitable supporting devices, of a plurality of `roofing-sheets joined together at their side edges, side-,plates supporting the outer or eaves ends off the roofing-sheets, the corners of the roong-sheets overlying the i sideplates being cut away, joint-strips overlying the sideedges of the roofing-sheets and the cut away corner portions thereof, and nails securing the joint-strips to the side-plates and passing through Vthe spaces formed by cutting away the corners of the roofingsheets.
3. In a car-roof, the combination of a ridgepole having recesses at its sides, sideplates, roofing-sheets having upturned flanges at their side and ridge edges, the side edges of adjacent sheets being connected together, and the corners of the rooiing-sheets overlying the side-plates being cut away, joint-strips having grooves on their under` sides adapted to receive the side flanges of the roofing-sheets, the inner ends of said joint-strips projecting beyond the ridge Iianges of the rooting-sheets and being itted in the grooves of the ridgepole, and means securing the joint-strips to`the side-plates and passing through the spaces formed by cutting away the corners of the roofingsheets.
' 4. In a car-roof, the combination of suitable supporting devices comprising sideplates at the sides of the ear, roofing-sheets supported at their eave ends by said sideplates, said sheets having out away portions overlying the side-plates, and joint- .strips overlying the joined edges of adjacent plates and such cut away portions, and
