Beit known that I, HENRY O. GANvARn, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, and State of New York,
`have inventedcertain newand nseful- Dies for Forming Shovels; andildohereby declare that thefbllowing is a full, clealyandexact `description thereof, refer.-

i jectingllorn, d, upon which the handle-socket'is formed,
are attached, respectively, to the bed F `and rain G of thepress, in any suitable manne The matrix is provided with a lyielding bottom, C, which may beof any desired larea less 'than the dat portion of the shovelor the eoncaved portion of the That partici' the "ati-ia, la, in which the socket of the shovel is formed, may orniny Ilot be attached to the matrix. l
.The bot-tom C may be supported ,bystii metallic or l rnhhersln'ings,` or hy a suitable connection between it A and the ram G, whereby the die A and bottom C desendftogether into the matrix, haringtheyplate to be formed clamped between them. By this arrangement lit will `be seen `that the blank shovel is prevented from l wn'nkling or warping init-he bottom as it isforced into the mold.
For the purpose of 'forming the socket for the 'handle, I providclthe hinged folders D D', figs. 24 and 3,
oscillating upon the axis b, and operated by levers c.
` VThe axis-b is secured to the matrix or socket-bed a, `and is located in a line with .the center ot' the horn d vwhenthe die B is at the lowest extremity of its stroke, as shown in iig. 2. f
When the howl of the shovel is formed in the ma` tr'ix, the folders turn down at the side of the horn c1,- and the blank liesover them, as shown by the heavy line in ig.'3. After the die descends, each of these .folders is partially revolved upon the/axis b, by means of thelevers c, as indicated bythe dotted circles in tigf 3, pressing the metal over the horn al of the die.
1t will be observed that one ofthe folders, D', is lol cated somewhat nearer thanrD to the axis b and horn d. This is necessary, since one portion of the handle- `socket; laps over the other for the purpose of riveting together. yThe. nearer folder D is, therefore, used-and returned to its'place previously` to. the further one, Rollers maybe provided upon these folders t-o reduce the frictionvupon the blank.
Aft-er the shovel is thus formed, the die B is lifted andthe shoveldrawn oi in the direction of the horn d. A stop, fis provided, against which the end of the blank is ser, and similar guides may be used upon the side to center it. l 1 l By means of this invention Iam enabled to per-- fectly form a shovel'or similar'artiele, of any size or weight, at one operation, and it is particularly appli-' cable to the manufacture of theshovel patented by J. T. Page, July 21, 1868.` ,l What Ielaiinas my invention, and desire to secure by. Letters Patent, is
G,`-in combination with the follower B, all operating substantially as andfor the purposes set forth. y V
2. The combination of the dies A, B, and C, man-` fdreld, and bending-rollers D and D', construeted'and arranged substantially as described.
